CINCINNATI - A car commercial proclaiming a jihad on the U.S. auto market and offering “Fatwa Fridays” with free swords for the kids is offensive and should not be aired, Muslim leaders said on Sunday.
The radio advertisement for the Dennis Mitsubishi car dealership in Columbus, Ohio, has “a whole jihad theme,” said Adnan Mirza, director of the Columbus office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
“They are planning on launching a jihad on the automotive market and their representatives would be wearing burqas ... ,” Mirza said. “They mentioned the pope in there and also about giving rubber swords out to the kiddies -- really just reprehensible-type comments.”
Details of the radio ad, which has not yet been broadcast, have been reported in the local media, but officials at the dealership declined to comment about the content of the radio spot.
Two employees at the dealership said they had been deluged with calls about the commercial.
“The ad has has never been released, it is not out for public listening,” said one employee who declined to give his name. He would not say whether the dealership had changed its mind about airing the commercial.
Oh Maaaaaan, too much. I don't think I will be driving a Jihad Metro anytime soon.
Can this really be on the level? Or is this a scene from Jackass: The Movie Part 2?

Get a sense of humor? Jihad me going there.... I thought it WAS funny?
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
Now, low would be a toothless redneck dressed as Mohammad, telling people that Allah wants them to buy this car!
(Then the pope would really hit the fan.)

Posted: 9/25/2006 7:20:45 AM | Well, one of the things I do admire about Americans is this amazing ability to self-promote. When I traveled in the States, seeing those local car dealership ads (especially down south) always brought a smile to my face.
You know the " Billy's Bob's Johnson's Chevrolet and International Harvester Deal-O-Rama, " , "You may walk in, but we promise you that you'll be drivin' out !!! " type ? The one's that almost look like they came straight off of Mad TV or SNL ? That look like they were shot by the guy's brother-in-law ? 
That said, this one's a little over the top....to put it mildly.
It kind of reminds me of that hoax viral video one for Volkswagon, where the suicide bomber drives up and parks on a crowded street, presses the plunger, and the explosion's totally contained within the car ?
I love creative advertising, but you have to know where to draw the line. This is one of those times.... | |

How about Jesus on a cross being crucified. "we'll crucify the competition" and give away free carpenter belts and hammers.
Or maybe a Jewish commercial with a uniformed soldier giving away toy M-16's.

I agree it is a stupid idea for a commercial, as most would boycott the car for being seen as an "islamic" vehicle. | |

Question #1.......
What is the point of advertising?
Answer...... To get people to hear about your product so you can SELL it......
The dealership says that two of their employees are deluged with calls........ Sounds to me like this is one advertising campaign that actually worked..... As far as the detractors go...... get a life.

Posted: 9/27/2006 5:41:45 PM | So, to use that same logic, you would agree that a person who was selling ice cream and cold sodas on a very hot summer afternoon ( and not having finding many clients on the street) should send an employee into a large air conditioned theatre complex and start screaming " Fire !" ?
That would certainly mean sales would probably go up, as everyone started stampeding outside in a panic, and waited there in the blistering hot sunlight for it all to be resolved . | |

Answer...... To get people to hear about your product so you can SELL it......
If you are inside that dark air conditioned theatre, you have no idea that the service of that ice cream vendor outside is there waiting for you, nor do you really care.
If you are standing in the hot sun outside, you are certainly much more open to buying the product, and knowing that the service is available.
Using something as repulsive as terrorism to sell cars, in this tension filled world we all live in, shows a troubling lack of any moral responsibility towards the situation, and improving it. If money and profit is the only thing that count, they we are all poorer. | |
