| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/28/2006 9:25:16 AM | Hi
having just watched (and enjoyed) a movie called "Hearts of Fire" with Bob Dylan, im thinking how many top class musician/singers have crossed that that line into becoming a good actor in a good movie, i have watched many movies with musicians and cant help thinking geez he/she should still to music, i can think of one 3 singers/musicians who i can say i really respect as an actor...Sinatra has made some great movies (my fav being The Mancurian Candidate, and the Tony Rome movies), Diana Ross and Cher ("Suspect" one of my fav courtroom thrillers), there may be more out there.....The Spice Girls...hmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!

Mick Jagger did movies [Freejack for one] Chris Christopherson did lots of movies David Bowie did a number of decent movies then there is Ice Cube ... questionable musician Bing Crosby and Bob Hope movies ... very funny There are lots of cross overs you don't even know about because they were back and side musicians ... not front men singers.... I wouldn't even call Frank a musician... he was a singer. same with Bing...
oh ... and Tom Petty was in ... The Postman [he is a real musician]

| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/28/2006 11:01:16 AM | | Flea and Anthony Kiedis from the Chilli Peppers are in Point Break with Keanu Reeves and are ok in what is a small role........ Tom Waits acts but I haven't seen him in anything to judge. Alanis Morissette is in Dogma and a Sex in the City episode. Jon Bon Jovi has had a go and can be found at your local video shop in 'Vampires' with the classic tagline: 'Wanted: Undead or Alive.' I'm almost tempted to rent it....... | |

|
| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/29/2006 2:57:06 AM | Yeah, Dwight Yokam was excellent in SLING BLADE. He was also really good in Tommy Lee Jones film THE THREE FUNERALS OF MELQUIONE VEGAS or something like that.
How about Bette Midler? Great performances in DOWN and OUT in BEVERLY HILLS, RUTHLESS PEOPLE, OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE, BEACHES, THE ROSE.
Or Barbra Streisand? She has won Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes, etc...
Elvis?
Annette Funicello?
Frankie Avalon?
Dean Martin?
Bing Crosby? Oscar winner.
Harry Bellafonte?
Sting?
Lyle Lovett? Great in THE PLAYER.
John Doe?
Michelle Phillips?
Bernadette Peters?
Worst of all time:
Wayne Newton
Ringo Star
Paul Williams
Art Garfunkle
Paul Simon
Bob Dylan | |

| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/29/2006 7:46:58 AM | I used to like Sinatra, but I watch that now and I can't believe some of the stuff I used to go for.
People didn't start realistically criticizing movies until the late sixties. Until then, we had so many movies that were laughably silly but were never called out in the media about it. Today we have sites like IMDB, where anyone can write reviews... and they write GOOD ones many times.
In the fifties... that "Manchurian Candidate" movie was so silly. To me, it was a black comedy and must have been intended to be so; but the movie audiences were so dumb they took it seriously... Movie opens with soldiers hypnotized by north koreans and being forced to work in the textile industry doing needlepoint... COME ON!!!
or John Wayne as "temmmooo gin" in "The Conqueror"? or Tony Curtis riding on a charger in full nights regalia, tilting the face plate of his helmet up and announcing "Yonda loys da cassle of my fahda!" to his compatriots?
PuLLEEEEZE!!!
not many singers ever made good actors... in my opinion.
Elvis was one; but then he was stuck in bad movies.
Kris Kristofferson is pretty good...
Jagger? At first, his career was disastrous.
Dean Martin? ... as a straight man for Jerry Lewis, yes. As anything else? not quite.
Streisand? yes | |

| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/30/2006 12:31:01 AM | Tom Waits is one Musician that I don't mind as an actor... but he is quite the character anyway..
I think a lot of those rappers/ r&b or hooker-pop chicks are just doing the acting thing to capitalize on their popularity now before their 15 minutes are up, it's just another way for them to wh0re themselves out for the bling as they say, I don't think they are trying to say anything artistic

| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/30/2006 11:04:28 AM | Madonna can't act....but isn't aware of this herself! | |
|
| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/30/2006 11:07:25 AM | River Phoenix was pretty good - he was a talented musician and actor who grew up with an unfortunate childhood. Will Smith is another great one from the 90s. Some of the Aussies (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) are known for acting and being involved in music, Viggo Mortesen is a jazz musician and great actor. Check out Minnie Driver in Phantom of the Opera the new one...and a few other musicials for true talent. Going back to classics, Elvis did a lot of movies in his day and you can't diss Julie Andrews.
Check out Delovely which has some musicians acting in the movie like Alanis Morisette, Diana Krall and other great ones.
But there are a lot of Actors turned musicians and vice versa who should just stick to one or the other. Cough cough, Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton (if you can call her an actress), Brittney Spears and the list goes on.

| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/30/2006 2:36:58 PM | Hi
Madonna did a good job in "Desperately Seeking Susan", but went downhill from there, and Ringo Starr was great as a Teddy Boy in "That'll Be The Day", and Ray Charles in "The Blues Brothers" was cool!!!!
|
| actor or musician??? Posted: 9/30/2006 5:29:53 PM | | I also thought Madonna was terrific in "Evita", but heartily agree her strength is singing, not acting. | |

My post up above was not real thought out. You guys have proven me wrong... Oh well.
Many musicians have failed as actors, but it's been a great source of talent for the movie industry nonetheless.
