Neither. Go with General Motors or Ford.

They both have almost equal ratings as to reliability, etc. Your money is well spent on either car. I have had both cars and I find them both to be well worth the money. Also, I have found that Toyota and Honda dealers tend to be a great deal more helpful and courteous. I think they go out of their way to please you. If you buy a GM or Ford car you will lose $10,000 as soon as you drive the car off the lot. In my opinion GM and Ford are built to self destruct after 4 or 5 years. Read the news. Both companies are in trouble financially. What does this mean to the potential buyer? Poor quality, poor reliability, poor service, and sales people with an 'attitude'. And remember, both Toyota and Honda cars are built in the U.S. by American workers.

I think it depends on the car model and the year.
I can find out if there are any special deals (incentives) and I can recommend you a dealer that won't rip you off.
So what kind of car are you looking for? sedan? coupe? suv? truck?
and what's the price range?

'There is a difference'. I think you have given very good advice re the Toyota and Honda cars. In all my years I have run into only one Toyota dealer that tried to rip me off. I have lost track of the number of american car dealers that were in the rip off business! Sad but true. Allow me to give you an example. I was out looking for cars with a friend of mine that was interested in an american suv. We stopped at a GM dealer, (no names), It was a Saturday morning and he was looking for an SUV. The salesman quickly told him - 'Oh I've sold 25 of those cars this morning. Better get this one cause it's the last one I have etc etc'. Come on give me a break. Intelligence rules here. He ended up buying a Toyota SUV.
Good luck to you Canuck43.

i once worked for a small company that sold parts for import cars. both toyota and honda are well engineered cars, however i always felt the honda was a very complicated car (under the hood) i have experienced owning a couple of each, and find the toyota a tad bit easier to maintain as well as being cheaper and more cost effective in the long run.
if you are thinking of purchasing new -than you should get your own financing, through your credit union or bank. when you get to the dealership -stick to your guns -before you go inside, write down the things you want (on paper) -as well as the maximum price you will go. -if they wont accomodate you -simply tell them to nicely to go f*ck themselves and walk out.
if you are thinking of looking for used -definately get preapproved for a loan from your bank or credit union, find the car you like in the paper, ebay, auto trader, HAVE THE AUTO INSPECTED BY A SHOP BEFORE YOU PUT A NICKEL DOWN ON IT. most good shops will perform this service for less than $50. -it will save you headaches in the future, and will help you in bartering with the price, or if you should walk away from the car/deal. (if a seller wont agree to having his car inspected -they are probibly hiding a problem with the car) once the two of you agree on a price -you can complete the deal at the bank where you were approved for the loan. -much safer, as well as the bank taking care of the paperwork, title etc.

Good point. Honda makes great engines but their other parts under the hood is so and so... such as their transmission. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Honda cars do not have a transmission fluid filter... so it requires transmission fluid flushing to maintain a smooth gear shift for automatic transmissions.

Toyota on the other hand make pretty good engines and also other parts under the hood and it is overall cheaper to maintain. In the long run, both manufacturer's maintenance cost won't make much difference though... they're both really similar. It's a matter of preference in car style and options. Do you like the Camry over the Accord? Then go with the Toyota and vice versa. As to compare the cars, here are the similar niche groups:

Example: Toyota car vs. Accord car

Yaris vs. Fit
Corolla vs. Civic
Camry vs. Accord
CR-V vs. Rav4

etc...

I like Honda dealers over Toyota dealers though... simply because most Honda cars come with about three option packages: DX, LX, EX

Whereas, Toyota dealers will add a lot of unnecessary options to bump up the prices.
I remember when I wanted to get a Scion they added so many stuff to the car that it bumped the price about $4000... and it's suppose to be a cheap affordable car for college students. So I decided not to get a Scion because of the bad business practices of most Toyota dealers.

'There' You can say that again about Honda transmissions. I had an 02 Honda that 'clunked' down the street every day. Of course the dealer told me it was normal. I thiink they should mate a Toyota tranny with a Honda engine. That would be the answer to a lot of problems in my opinion.

It depends on how much you pay for it, of course. I got my brand new Toyota Camry for $350 over invoice (few thousand under MSRP). My best friend's 1995 Toyota Camry has over 200,000 miles on it and it never had engine problem, but he had to replace the battery once - because he was playing the radio while the car was not running. My other friend's Camry has over 350,000 miles on it and it still runs really quietly. My nephew's 1995 Honda Accord has had some problems with finding inexpensive replacement parts and being able to fix it himself like the valve cover gasket was kind of hard to replace because a screw broke off and it was hard to find a replacement screw. When my sister bought her new Honda Accord, I thought it handled the road better than my Camry, but I think my Camry has a more comfortable drive on the straight away. So I like Toyota better. Hope this helps.

either way they are both reliable...american cars are mostly garbage after 100k miles if not taken care of...more inexpensive aftermarket parts are available for JDM market vehicles then american...if some people disagree with me go ahead Ive been working/studying on honda ( primarily)/toyota/nissan for the past 3 years and well...Honda aka Acura,Toyota aka scion aka Lexus,Nissan aka Infiniti will always dominate over the american market of cars mostly because of thier relaiblity, design and gas efficiency....and like I said if you disagree...your choice but think about this...how many people trade in thier imports after 100k? Also how many imports lose over 50% of thier value after 75k miles on the motor?

Have a nice day folks...

Oh, I had a Toyota 4Runner (Surf) while stationed in Okinawa, Japan and it was the best 4x4 SUV I have ever had the pleasure of driving, on and Off Road...

Honda... No Comment... Sorry...

I read with great interest your post. I would like to ask you if I may, who you are insured with? But first let me tell you that I came very close to buying a 4runner, but for me (with a bad back) it just rode too firm. Instead I opted for the new Lexus RX350. This is probably the most fantastic car I have owned. It has more safety features built in than I could ever imagine, and gas mileage runs about 23-30MPG. Extremely satisfied with the car, and especially because the car is actually made by Toyota…Except of course for one thing. When I owned the Honda it stopped on a dime just barely hitting the break pedal. The Lexus, to me anyway, you have to punch the brake pedal thru the floor boards before the thing will stop. Have had a few close calls lately, so I am going to go to the dealer and discuss this matter.
As far as commenting on a Honda I once owned, the only thing I can say is No Comment.
Now back to the insurance. I am insured with AARP Hartford and carrying 100/300/100. I pay approx 1600 a year. I guess living in Glendale, California has a lot to do with it. Just for kicks I called 21st Century one day and got a quote of over 3000! Oh well.

Thank you so very much for your reply to my post. Yes, in years gone by I have tried them all - AAA, GEICO, MERCURY and the cheapest yet has been AARP Hartford Underwriters with clean driving record.

You're welcome.
Insurance rates have a lot to do with region. Different regions have different rates for different insurance companies. Best to shop by comparing them all.
Also, if you can get multi-policy (home, another car, etc) discounts, then it's better to go with that.

After owning both a 1999 Honda Civic and a 1993 Toyota Cellica,I've found that the Toyota is a better running automobile. The Honda is not a smooth ride nor is it great on gas mileage. The Honda has been nothing but a car who breaks down consistently.I have to say Toyota is the better car maker.

And as far as the 1999 civic and the 1993 corolla, we are talking totally different engines and displacements.....for example both are inline four most likely but the newer honda probably had a D16 engine have something called vtec and well...if your not into motors you probably wont know what Im talking about....so as for that comment its like comparing a 1984 dodge ram to a 2006 ram...totally different engines and totally different fuel comsumption units (regulators,injectors,ecu's...etc etc) so yea that comparison is BLA!...no offense,it just isnt very valid.
