| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/2/2006 11:36:05 PM | | Roy holds most of the records, so I have to second that opinion. Tretiak is the best Russian goalie, and dare I say best non-Canadian goalie of all time, but it's hard to give him too much credit, considering he never played in the NHL and very rarely played against professional opposition. | |

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 1:05:25 AM | To me it depends on who was in front of the said goalie.
Like Grant Fuhr was a great goalie, but what would he have been like without Gretz or Mess to tally up at the other end.
I'd say honorable mention goes to Brodeur as well as Sawchuck, Terry was another era but I guarantee his glove was one of the fastest the league has ever had.
Roy, and Tretiak are givens, Belfour regardless of his mental cough syrup episodes wouldn't have been as good as he was without Tretiaks help.

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 4:10:23 AM | | how do you even begin to answer such a question? Patrick Roy may have been great and set records...but cried like a little girl when things didn't go his way. Plus...he always HAD to have a great team in front of him. Take someone like Glles Meloche was on the total opposite and of the spectrum; he always had the luck of playing for a team that finished in last place or near last place...and anaged to have a respectable G.A.A. . Or, take someone like Pelle Lindburgh, whose life was cut tragically short when he was killed mid season at a young age in a car wreck. Then...take a guy like Martin Brodeur...very consistant...setting records all of the time...and still playing. As much of a Devils fan I'm not...I would give him the nod myself if I had to pick one. Then there is Hasek, Parent, Sawchuck, Fuhr, Dryden, Kipper, Voukoun...etc. etc. etc. | |

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 4:58:28 AM | | I would have to agree with Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur..... A slight edge to Marty (I hate the devils) for winning gold for Canada at the Salt Lake City Olympics and the World Cup Of Hockey, meaning his play extended to international play also.... I just think he is a better clutch goalie than Roy.... | |
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 6:06:30 AM | | Esposito, Plante, Dryden, Roy, Shawchuk, Brodeur... outside of Marty nobody playing today deserves mention in the same breath as any of these players. How many cups has the "Dominator" won - likely a hall of famer but give me Shawchuck anyday. | |

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 6:39:08 AM | Another great explanatory thread title:
"Of all time" How can we possibly know how good those goalies yet to be born are?
"Goalie" - of which sport, or doesn't it matter?
The best soccer goalie, so far, was Gordon Banks of Stoke and England.
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 12:34:39 PM | wow vin...you really struggle to troll sometimes don't you.
You know, I'm not even a soccer fan and I can tell you that in that sport, there are no goalies. They are called keepers.
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 12:50:45 PM | | Best HOCKEY goalie....IMO...I have to say Martin Brodeur...No matter what kind of team played in front of him, he always managed to steal games. | |

Another great explanatory thread title:
Seems like you were the only one that had any trouble figuring out the thread title.
Remind me again why you even post on the sports board since all you do is complain.
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 2:01:04 PM | For me it was Gilles Meloche........60-70 shots a game, he had to be good | |
|
| |
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 3:09:05 PM | | plus...back in the his North Star tenure...Gilles Meloche cut the whole eyes AND nose part out of the mask and replaced with steel cage...hence the first modern era mask!! And his nickname with the Cleveland Barons?...the 'Robber Baron'...just some more useless rambling facts.... | |
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/3/2006 4:02:52 PM | | He played with the Oakland Seals here for awhile... it amazed me how the scores were kept so low with almost no other defense... | |

| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 2:10:38 AM | MSG 9 and 11.
If you are referring to my other post re pointless sports, we were asked for our thoughts. I posted mine on the sport of basketball. I did not complain that people enjoy the sport, or that I am forced to play or watch it. Thank you for not complaining that my single sentence wasn't rambling....
My comments on this thread title related to it's ambiguity - if it had said hockey goalie, I would not have selected it. Don't forget, the sports forum is global.
As for the term "goalie", given that we English invented the terminology of soccer, I can assure you that it is quite correct to refer to the goalkeeper as a "goalie". Keeper is also acceptable.
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 4:02:37 AM | Well considering everyone else knew this was about NHL goalie's, what exactly is your problem??? | |
|
| |
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 7:43:48 AM | He Vin...you come on here after seeing numerous comments regarding hockey goalies, none regarding soccer KEEPERS and still whine about ambiguity?
Like I said Vin...keep on trolling.
|
| |
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 11:58:17 AM | i am with Vin,
"goalie" is a term used in football to describe goalkeepers and that is an undisputed fact!
the title of the thread says clearly "best goalie of all times" so the logic is to talk about goalkeepers!
it would have been better to say "best NHL goalie of all times"
anyway,Peter Shmeichel of Manchester United and Oliver Khan of Bayer Munich have been great goalies but not sure who has been the best as there have been several great ones
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 12:51:37 PM | Oh go figure. Pedro agrees with Vin. Surprised it took you so long to troll this thread pedro | |
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 12:57:45 PM | well i understand perfectly!!!!!!!! pat jennings..peter shmeichel...gordon banks... "goalie". is our word....get your own........... | |
|
| Best Goalie of all times Posted: 10/4/2006 2:33:56 PM | MSG 19 Yes, a soccer goalie can be pulled.
Hey, you should all be pleased that Pedro and I have agreed on something for a change!
The OT made no attempt to limit this thread to hockey goalies..the two names he mentioned could easily have played for a soccer team, given that I'd never heard of them.
