| | Is my daughter a Dork?Page 1 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | I have recently noticed my daughter saying and doing things. I am not sure, but I think she might be turning into a dork. Now, my dork friends here know I have nothing but admiration for them. But, if I hear the word "Nifty" one more time, my head will explode. And what's the deal with the colorful tube socks? When I aske her why she does some of the things she does, she smiles that innocent smile and says, "Cause I'm Spiffy like that." Is there anything I should know and be prepared for? Someone help me out. | |

That's okay. Uber-dorks are cool. If she does complete the transformation let me know and I'll send her the membership card into the club. I'm the President.

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 7:59:51 PM | ...Depends how old she is, Kap.
If she's a pre-teen she's yet to establish her personality.
If she is a teen she'll be in the middle of forming her personality.
If she's an adult, then yes, she's a dork.
(But you love her anyway!)

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 8:04:29 PM | wow i cant believe you actually asked that here, it shouldnt matter if your daughter is a so called dork or not, she is your child and you should love her and support her no matter what lable society tries to put on her.. if you are wondering things like this about her what kind of a message does that send her? its your job as a parent to encourage your child to spread their wings and be an individual, learn new things and not be afraid to be who they really want to be... we dont always have to conform the the social norms in life and i think you should stop worrying if your daughter is a so called dork or not... she is who she is and there is nothin you or I or anyone can do to change that, be comfertable with who she is and she will be too!! Good luck and God Bless! | |

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 8:06:47 PM | She's all of 14 and has a mind of her own. Nothing she could do would ever stop me from loving her. She seems happier than usual. She's still very popular, she's just become a goofball. What is with the Pippy Longstocking socks and shiny black shoes? | |

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 8:08:21 PM | Dorks are people too you know
seriously she is just finding out who she is, her personality, her very own sense of fashion. I personnally thinks it is wonderful. Some of the crazy dressers, *dorks* are very creative and smart, lovable people so embrace her dorkdum you could have a genius in her own right on your hands. Love her for all she is, and she will always call home when she is not there anymore.

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 8:09:02 PM | Maybe she's just a kid growing up and exploring her own self. Think back to your teenage years. Did you ever do anything of which your folks may not have approved??? Hmmm.....yeah, thought so. | |

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 8:31:12 PM | Think back to your teenage years.
Oh, Hell No!!! I'm not sure of the statue of limitations. I will admit to singing along to the radio at times, but she screams to it and her new favorite is Oingo Boingo. She makes me laugh so much, just lastnite, she took things from the shelves in a grocery store and asked whoever was near, "What's this word mean and how do you pronounce it?" She gets a kick out of the big words in the ingredients labels.
Why is everyone talikng this as a negitive thread? I am simply asking a simple question.

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 8:33:09 PM | | I think your problem is not your daughter but yourself. You seem to be judgmental. If your daughter is a good kid , follows the law, meets curfew etc , you should be ecstatic . You do realize that your daughter may catch on to your negativity even if you do not say anything and that in itself may cause your daughter to rebel . | |

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 8:38:04 PM | help you out with what? there's no real problem here. she sounds like fun, and she wears cute things, you even said she's happy. you worry too much, daddy-o. | |

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 8:46:09 PM | Nothing gives children more pleasure than doing things which irritate their parents. I suggest you pay attention to who her friends are and see if she's getting along well with the other kids in school. I would be willing to bet there are other kids in her school who dress just the same way she does and she's just trying to fit in, which is perfectly healthy and normal. However if she doesn't have any friends or is suffering an untoward amount of rejection or teasing for the way she dresses then you might want to look into it. Even though we went through it ourselves, it's very difficult for us adults to quite fathom the minds of youngsters, especially the girls. | |

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 9:09:01 PM | First of all , NO father should ever say their daughter is a dork. Thats the worst friggin thing you can say. Depending how old she is , she's probably trying to figure out her sense of style and who and what she feels comfortable with , and you should be supportive , not interrogative about how she chooses to express herself.
It would be one thing if she was 12 years old dressing like a whore , but its another thing when a child or young adult tries to experiment with looks. shame on you for questioning that.

That sounds like fun fashion to me! In your place I'd be thanking my lucky stars that she isn't wearing thongs and really low-waisted jeans!
It's wonderful she does things you don't understand. It means she is her own person, and not afraid to be so! Yay for that! And as long as she knows you love her no matter what, then all is well in the kingdom, no?
My folks had to put up with me saying "the bees knees" and "the cat's pyjamas" for years! *smirk*

First of all , NO father should ever say their daughter is a dork. Who ever said being a Dork is a bad thing? No, she's not trying to fit in, she never worries about what others think. She does enjoy doing things simply for the shock value. I need advise from other Dorks on what I can do and what I should watch out for. Believe me, I've very supportive, just confused.

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 9:45:18 PM | | my sister used to go to her high school in hospital scrubs and old man slippers cause it was comfy. she was prom queen her senior year. everyone knows her and loves her because she is so quirky. encourage your daughter to be different. lord knows the so called normal people mostly suck. | |

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 9:54:07 PM | also, i and my friends probably fell into a "dork" crowd back in the day. oh well, one grew up to be a doctor, one belongs to mensa and is finishing his masters in comp science, one has traveled and live over seas and now holds a great job in a university, and i am a professional as well as a student looking for a new life cause i'm not afraid to try anything new. being different taught me that. the so called normal kids still haven't left our ratty little town or done anything exciting yet.
go dorks! | |

| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 10:19:00 PM | Just a father here having fun with his daugther..Get the negatitvy yat of here. | |
|
| Is my daughter a Dork? Posted: 10/3/2006 10:31:27 PM | Seems to me like you are more concerned about your daughers "popularity" than she is. She is happy...Bottom line.
Maybe you didn't have a good experience in school and you are trying to avoid her falling into that same "group" you were in. Don't sweat it high school only lasts 12 years then it doesn't matter who the prom queen is and who the uber-dorks were. We simply then become just people with the friends we earned along the way.
