Not too bad... from what I gather, the article basically says that retailers will have a choice... it won't be mandatory to open or close.

That is BULL.....if one store opens all the other stores will open. The workers are going to have to work, YES they say they will protect us BUT our hours WILL get cut if we don't work Sunday's...it has already happened at Sobeys and Superstore

Everyone except Government type offices and retail has been open on Sundays for years. This merely brings retail into the same job market as the rest of the province. i.e. Hotels, restaurants, gas stations, call centres, etc.

I feel for those retail workers who have never had to work on a Sunday, but as someone who has always worked Sundays, I fail to see why retail should have a law that enforces a "Uniform Day Off" when the rest of the service industry does not.

You have to be kidding me?

Can you please outline to be the downsides to this?

We were the only place in North America to do this, it's time we did something about it. We're not Amish, we don't bake our own bread or knit our own sweaters, so we need to stop acting like it.

I am a full time student, taking a full course load and I work two jobs. Needing to have one set day per week off is bull. You people need to suck it up and get a grip. it's called responsibility. Besides, when did it ever hurt to make a little more money? Students have the option to work more shifts, allowing them to reduce student debt. It's a win win, since they're mainly the ones who work retail anyway.

Testify Sister!!!! It is about time that we shop on sunday.....half of society has to work on sunday anyways.....usually to wait on the other half.....now we have a nice even playing field. Go **** to the bartender or movie usher about working on sunday and i'm sure you'll get the same response.

Play hockey with a buddy that works in the Head Office of the Atlantic Superstore and he said that the Truro store had 27 customers on Sunday. The market will determine whether stores stay open or not. You're more apt to see the stores in Metro open and the rural ones(where all the anti-Sunday shoppers are) not.

Leanne---I am glad that you are a student and want to work on Sunday, that is your right, BUT do you know how many students do NOT want to work and the normal full time people have to fill in for them? Students don't want to work on weekends, I have worked in retail for 14 years now and yes I was a student that did work saturday nights because other students didn't. The stores that were open this last few weeks 3/4 of the staff was full time workers because students did not want to work....

YES we were the only place in North America so I guess we have to follow everyone else and be the same....do you know how many people in north america think it is a great idea that Nova Scotia does not ( did not ) have Sunday shopping? a day with the family..

In Nova Scotia and not having Sunday shopping we have the most hours for retail because we do have stores that are open 24 hours and open until 9-10 at night, maybe we should go back to the stores closing at 6 pm everynight......like other places do....

I thought when we vote that is suppose to mean something but I guess anything can be changed if people bit*ch enough because they didn't get their own way OR they didn't vote.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and this is mine

Raine, it was the Supreme Courts decision that prompted this. It gives the gov't an out. A ... not our fault, we tried excuse. However, they set themselves up by discriminating against the larger grocery stores by letting Peete get away with it. The majority of Metro residents wanted Sunday shopping and now they will get it. Again, the market will dictate who opens and who doesn't. If you didn't shop on Sundays before, continue that. Oh, don't go get gas or watch a movie at a theater, otherwise that may seem hypocritical.

Exactly, Leafs.

If you want to spend Sunday with your family and friends, by all means do so.

However, good luck finding friends to spend it with. They're all still working on Sundays.

gas station, movie theaters etc....were always open on Sunday, and the people that work at these places know that they will have to work on Sunday. Now where I work, I knew when I was hired 7 years ago that we were closed on Sunday and would not have to work...

Yes I do get gas on sunday if I need it BUT I have not stepped in a store that just started sunday shopping and will not...I will support the people that don't want sunday shopping..

why's is it fair that all those people should have to wait on you, so you can enjoy your day off.....WAKE UP and join society...people shop on sunday,...the rest of the free world does....now we do.....moaning and complaining about isn't going to make any difference, this is what people want and now they have it. It's not like we have this boom economy where we can afford to not lets consumers consume on sunday. We are one the poorest provinces and any extra economy is a good thing. If you've ever been to Pete's, or gotten gas or been to a movie or tim's or something to eat.....then yes....you support sunday shopping. Don't be a hypocrite...just suck it up and embrace the capatialist way of life.....

Just because you didn't have Sunday shopping does not mean that no one worked on Sunday......and......no one is forcing you to shop on Sunday or give up your family time.......I believe that is a personal choice............

I've worked at these pleaces and I can tell you people still have to work there on sundays even though they weren't open same goes for Wal-mart, on sundays there was still about 30 people working. And normally it's the new hires that have to work sundays not the people who have been there for a year or more. This is all based on my actual experience working that these places.

Where I work, WE NEVER CLOSE. I say amen that those of us that work the sh*tty shifts with our jobs (yes we knew that when we accepted the positions) can finally be able to have some semblance of normalcy. I can't count how many times I've woken on a Sunday after a nightshift and wished I could grab a few groceries for the coming week. Now I won't have to pay exhorbitant prices at the corner stores and/or pharmacies for essentials. Selfish? You bet!!! Ask me how selfish the next time you have to work a 12 hour day on Christmas.

Now regardless of what i believe.

I do beleive, most large stores wont find it necessary to open for customers on sunday except during the holiday season. The city just isnt big enough to warrant it. But then again i could be wrong. I guess i just wanted to type something

Naw you're right Justin. It all depends whether it is feasible to the business. My Dad owns a drug store. Every other one is open Sundays but he never has been. Hell, he even started closing on evenings and never lost a bit of business. Maybe now, those convienence stores will give us friendlier service with more competition!
