| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 12:49:58 PM | So you've already had your kids OR don't want any to begin with. You're over...let's say 40, why wouldn't you get a vasectomy?
Seems to me like the smart thing to do yet so many men literally 'freak out' at the very thought of it.

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 12:56:01 PM | Hey...... Something can go wrong........ Could mess it up..... After all, they messed up my lobotomy.... and a vasectomy could even hurt worse......... better to let you tough ladies take care of that issue........... | |

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 1:10:35 PM | | Ok, but would your opinion change if no woman - EVER AGAIN- would have sex with you unless you'd had the procedure? | |

I'd freak out too at the thought of a knife that close to such a sensitive area!
Vasectomy - what's the big deal? I'm not surprised that you don't consider it a big deal especially considering that you're not going to be the one getting it.
Usually women think its the man who should get sterilized, since the procedure is thought to be less invasive. However, thanks to modern techniques like The Essure Procedure, its actually much safer for women to be sterilized.

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 1:20:36 PM | | Hey I had one. No regrets and it was NO BIG DEAL! In and out in a few hours, minimal pain, a vew days with ice on my groin. No biggie. Well worth the time, money. and decision to have done! | |

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 1:22:36 PM | I think the vasectomy is a great idea
I think it is just a really sensitive area
to illustrate to the ladies: kinda like how you would feel if someone put a pin near your eye......
that same kinda ......EEEEEEEEEEEE !!!!! freaky feeling but, MUCH less painful than paying for a kid for 18 years

You are under anesthesia. You don't feel it. You don't feel it then...unfortunately you have to spend the next few days with ice on your groin. Not fun. There are also some risks involved. The procedure for women I referred to involves no cutting or stitching. If I was in a relationship I would definitely not get a vasectomy now that there are other (superior) methods available.

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 1:27:55 PM | OP, I hate to rain on your parade, but um, you do know a vasectomy will not prevent STD's right? So knowing that, what difference would a vasectomy make if you are still using a condom anyways?
Whle I can see it's place in a very long term, secure, monogamous relationship. There really is no point to it outside of one. I don't normally consider surgical procedures as a way to show you are a hip, new millenium kinda guy. But that is just me.
Have fun ;)! | |

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 1:28:32 PM | | I had one and it was nothing. Quick, easy and virtually pain free. Couple of days of light discomfort and I was back on my feet. Much safer procedure than a tubal ligation for the ladies. | |

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 1:36:11 PM | No matter how uncomfortable the procedure is, just think "I'm pregnant, you're a daddy!!" a bunch of times in your head - much more traumatic and expensive, no? That ought to take away any doubt. You don't want em, that's the easiest way to prevent it from YOUR end.
And even if it is uncomfortable, um....you're a bunch of men. Aren't you supposed to be tough enough to withstand a little discomfort? For a comparison, try nine months of pregnancy and then pushing a watermelon from your insides. LOL

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 1:48:00 PM | LOL I once tried to get my vet to give me a two for one on spaying. My doctors wouldnt fix me at 18....they thought I was too young to decide. Turns out I knew what I wanted. So now at almost 39 I have to do it.
Ever have kidney stones?
OMG no but I have heard horror stories...the pain is unbearable I have heard. You poor thing.
The most painful I have ever endured is back muscle spasms, a shin bone dented from a brick wall, and a broken toe.
No, I have never had children, but I have heard enough horror stories that I don't need to go thru it to get the point. One friend of mine was in labor 72 hours, and couldnt have an epidural for medical reasons. OUCH

What is Non-Surgical Vasectomy?...does anyone know about this?....is it Laser surgery? I hear there is no incision with this surgery. I don't know of any non-surgical vasectomy techniques but I do know of a non-surgical sterilization technique for women called The Essure Procedure. There are no incisions and it's so non-invasive that even anesthetic is not required. I would encourage anyone who is concerned about some of the risks of vasectomies to look into this option.

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 1:59:27 PM | I don't see vasectomy as a big deal so long as the gentleman in question sternly considers the fact that THAT's IT, it's not something you're supposed to change your mind about and try to get undone later on.
Personally I'ms eriously contemplating it already, but decided to give it three more years (say until my 30th birthday) before I close the window on parenthood, especially "accidental fatherhood" which is a fate I consider worse than death .
Oh well, I'll come back here in 3 years and post my thoughts on the procedure then

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 2:20:04 PM | | I had one after my second child was born. It's a simple operation that requires only a local anesthetic. Two kids was enough for me, however, I did have a close call on a reversal when was in a relationship once. Thank goodness that it did not happen for she and I were not meant to be and a child would have only complicated matters. | |

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 2:26:13 PM | Yep, had one here too.
Less complications than all the screwy birth control methods we expect women to take care of.
Nice, simple, effective, and after your partner is a known quantity, not using a condom is worth every snip.

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 2:27:20 PM | Where are you people from, or where do you get your info? I had one when I was 30. Yes, that's right, never married, no kids, but I got snipped. Why? Because I believe it was the right thing to do, for me. There are too many single mothers and unwanted children in this world (NOT that the two go together, at all!!).
No pain, no anesthetic, no ice, no anti-inflammitories. Also, I was working on a portable log mill, cutting timber the VERY NEXT DAY! The whole procedure took about 40 minutes, including the time to watch the movie, consult with the doc and get snipped.
Now then, what was the question?

***Excuse me? I got 'fixed' after my second child and they had to make an incision (cut) into my abdomen and burn my fallopian tubes. Then they had to stitch me back up. Recovery from the anesthetic took 24 hours. It was well worth it, though.

| Vasectomy - what's the big deal? Posted: 10/4/2006 3:14:08 PM | Ihave had my tubes tied, at 27, after having two children. My husband said "NO one is touching my b***!!! ... I thought my family was complete. Then my marriage ended, and at 31, decided that perhaps I might meet someone who would want a child. I did, and I had my tubes reversed (at the cost of $5000.00, and not a 100% guarantee it would work, only 80%)...after a year of trying I had a baby girl....and then my marriage ended....one reason was children, my husband wanted me to have another, and I almost died having my that last one. I suggested a vasectomy - because since we paid $5K to get my tubes reversed, I figured he could have the little procedure done - he told me he wasn't ready to have something like that done yet - 'You might get hit by a bus tomorrow'.......hmmmmmmmm, marriage ended that night.
I don't care either way. I'm actually not ready to get my tubes tied again, but it has to do with me being 40 and I think it bugs me that REALLY my childbearing days are OVER...just can't emotionally do it - yet.......
