| Where will my US dollar go the farthest...Yet still a Nice safe place to visit? Posted: 10/9/2006 8:00:13 AM | Im looking for ideas on places that my US dollar will go as far as possible. I know mexico is great, but where in mexico exactly is safe and not too touristy packed, yet still has my US dollar going the extra mile?
Any thoughts on perhaps costa rica or places of this nature? Beautiful places that are relatively safe and not too far away as say....India.
Thanks

I see you are thinking of Costa Rica... I live in CR and I can tell you that the local paper has stated that CR has jusy been voted the happiest place in the World to live and the 3rd safest for women. Thats not to say that there arent areas that are not for women to be in at night, and that there isnt crime here, but the majority is petty crime, bag snatching etc.
If you are like me and take general precautions and stay out of those areas, this is a magnificent place to be. The dollar has strengthened against the local currency in the past 6 months with no sign of slowing and there are many areas where there are many Americans/Europeans here. Some retired, some here for a "fun" time and those who want to take "adventure" tours etc. There is something for everyone here...The scenery is gorgeous, the people are friendly and many people in the more tourist areas speak a little English
Let me know if you are interested in coming here...

I was last there seven years ago and it was getting noticably more expensive and touristy. There is so much to do and see there, so many climatic regions and nice people. It is fairly safe but every time I was there there was a German tourist kidnapped by Nicas in Santa Rosa park or a lady getting shot in Limon for her jewelry, etc... it can happen anywhere. Smart travellers will be fine and enjoy it, that's for sure.
Flights to asia are a bit pricey initially but there are many destinations that are downright cheap once one is there. Baja California Sur is a favorite of mine. What do you think of South America? Lucky luck!

Parts of Indonesia are like that. Other parts can be very frustrating. (They're worth seeing but you need to be prepared).
Malaysia is a little more expensive than Thailand. Still very easy. Costs are predictable (unlike Indonesia) partly because the Ringet is pegged to the dollar.
As a region, Southeast Asia is unbeatable in terms of low stress and low cost and, of course, there is tons to see and do.

Posted: 4/3/2007 11:29:13 AM | Hey Liz, Have been thinking of Costa Rica for quite some time and hope to visit sometime in the not too far off future. I am originally from New Mexico and know a few people from there that have moved full time to CR. Maybe you have run across one of my friends? He and his wife I believe are involved in Real Estate. His name is Tom Romero from Santa Fe New Mexico. At the moment I am working on developing some residual income so that I can be more free to travel. I visited your www site and have book marked it, will get in touch if and when. You keep up the good work. Cheers, Ed javascript:smilie(' ') javascript:smilie(' ')

Somewhere closer....Hmmm. I'd say Bulgaria or Lithuania. East Europe is cheap, but can be dodgy

Cheap yes, but Poland has a very high crime rate!!! NOT a safe place to be. Especially the touristy places, Warsaw, Cracow. I'm Polish, and I feel afraid in the big cities after dark. Lot of Russians and skinheads.

All three are safe for tourists, and reasonably priced outside of Prague, which still MUST be seen. Hotels tend to offer big hearty breakfast buffets, and are available for as little as $25 a night (in the gorgeous High Tatras of Slovakia), with the $50-$60 range getting you some really nice places in places like Gyor, Eger, or Ceske Krumlov. Budapest and Bratislava will probably cost you $80 for a nice older hotel. Prague will be more like $100.
Food is excellent in Hungary, and edible in Slovakia and Czech Republic. You can get a filling meal with lots of beer or wine for under $15. You can also go into these really cool medieval cities like Bardejov or Levoca, stop in at the nicest hotel in town, and sit there with a coffee and dessert for about $3 each. Try doing that at your local Four Seasons...
The classical music scene is outstanding in all three capital cities. We saw "The Marriage of Figaro" at the same opera house where Mozart conducted it in 1786. Budapest was even better for its opera/symphony/classical music concerts. Budapest also has a terrific art museum, and hot springs where we played in a hot swimming pool as snowflakes fell on our heads. Old men were playing chess on floating chess boards!
The internal train service is pretty bad, but buses are a reasonable alternative. We rented a car in Vienna and drove through the countries. Language issues - well, Hungarian is a REALLY hard language to understand, but most people under 30 know some English.

Posted: 6/10/2007 7:14:50 PM | Just got back a few weeks ago from Panama - Went there with my boyfriend (who I met on POF). The trip was part of a tour - and we had a great time. There are eco-tours, all sorts of motorized and non-motorized sports, people are friendly, many of whom speak English. We stayed at the Decameron Resort, which is on the Pacific coast, about an hour and a half away from Panama City.
If you want to get off the beaten path, you may want to find someone a bit more familiar with the country before going off to explore.
The dollar IS the local currency is Panama (no pesky exchanging currency back to dollars), and your dollar will go quite a ways.
