| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/9/2006 10:06:40 PM | Just a note of caution to everyone out there who uses handy dandy online banking:
Last friday I had $1000 stolen from my bank account through online banking transactions ($2100 was shuffled from my credit line to my chequing account then the $1000 transferred to another account belonging to random stranger). I only use my computer at home, which no-one else uses, or my computer at work, which is on a secure federal circuit. From now on, obviously changing that policy!! Only advice that bank had was to change password more frequently and only ever use online banking from one secure computer. (they are launching an investigation so fingers crossed ....)
Watch out people! Thiefs are about!

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/9/2006 10:09:13 PM | | If it was tranfered to another account they can see who it was transfered to no? so not random... | |
|
| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/9/2006 10:11:47 PM | | I guess i will find out in 10 days when the bank calls me back with an update. They weren't telling me anything when i spoke to them on Saturday! Presumably 'they' know who it is, but I give a rats ass about that (name shmame), so as far as I'm concerned the bozo can be conisdered random stranger for now. Until I get their name..... | |

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/9/2006 10:17:46 PM | I dunno! Maybe they'll tell me that in 10 days too. I'm hoping they'll eat it.
Random lurkers: Attention/pity seeking? I thought it was more along the lines of Public Service announcement! apologies, my bad.
|
| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/9/2006 10:25:20 PM | Yeah Hopefully the bank will eat the loss, they do a lot of times. You should run your comp through some good anti virus software if u havent already. Probally you have some kind of virus (key logger) on your comp and thats how they got your password.
P.S. Wasnt me who voted against the thread

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/9/2006 10:35:48 PM | I had a g/f who went thru the exact same thing on sat thru her TD acct.... they only got her for $300.... apparently they know the store where her card was double swiped, but wouldn't divulgde the info for fear of 'compromising' the investigation.
Hopefully in the 10 days everyone who has been affected, will get their money back.

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/10/2006 12:58:52 AM | | I got $500 taken from my account...not from the internet but same as Bettesme's friend...was double swiped in some store. They never caught the person...but I got my $500 back form the bank with no trouble at all..phew!! | |

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/10/2006 1:56:31 AM | Not good... is all I can say.
Hope this never happens to me. I'm still trying to get my $$ back from a bank in Airdrie that didn't give me the $$$ when I made a withdrawl from the ATM... bills were all crumpled and I was missing $20. !!! MAD!!!

doesn`t matter if ur the only 1 using ur computer or not.. hackers can get the info they need 2 get into ur acc`t.. which i had learnt my lesson 13-14 yrs ago when i first started online & had some random person get my credit card info (no they didn`t get 2 use it 2 their advantage.. as i had put a stop 2 that when i had found out it was a hacker & is also another reason y i refuse 2 do any any online banking!)..

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/21/2006 2:28:25 PM | | I've finally got my money back!! Hurrah!! Bank wont divulge information about what happened, so we are none the wiser, unfortunately. | |
|
| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 10/21/2006 2:33:49 PM | It happened to me last summer and it wasn't from hackers. My bank (TD) returned the money to me right away. Luckily, I had only used 2 ATM's in the one day when it happened and I was able to figure out how by myself. Be leery of those stand alone ATM's in convenience stores, cus they are unattended and unwatched if it is a busy store. Also, the pay at the pumps are supposed to be the worst for having cameras or other technology attached to them easily without staff being aware. | |

I really like TD, if i ever got hacked they guarantee my money. well, not really. I personally hate TD. three months ago, somebody stole $3,000 from my account, I filed the police report and everything afterwards, but they did not return my money. infact, I lost another $250.00 by them. they are just bunch of idiots.

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 1/23/2007 5:46:17 PM | only thing ill ever use online is my credit card which is constantly watched by visa if something happens and they arent sure they've always called me asap. Plus its guaranteed. No offence but if someone can hack some of the major corporations thru their firewalls and protections then i sure as hell am not going to sit here on my dinky lil firewalled computer and type in bank info no matter how much the bank assures me that its safe.
I only use the ATM of my bank and i alwasy check for attached pieces that shouldnt be there or not that long ago they were using lil mini cams under those plastic pcs meant to hide your typing from prying eyes. If your observant and keep an eye open you shouldnt run into to much trouble.

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 4/26/2008 11:08:57 PM | | Id like to chat with the people on this thread who had money stolen from them via online banking. I just had a bunch of money ripped off by mine tonight and im kinda flippin out. Im in calgary ab, i wonder if this is the same guy? | |
|
| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 4/26/2008 11:14:37 PM | What did you want to know? I've had it happen to me (Visa and cards skimmed). , and have a good understanding of IT security (that's my day job).
Was your money ripped off via online banking ?

| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 4/27/2008 6:55:25 AM | First piece of advice (from someone who worked in the industry for awhile):
Make sure that NONE of your PIN numbers and/or passwords are the same. Doesn't matter if they're for different banks, or your computer at home or work. If you have PINs or passwords the same, you may be held liable for the money that was taken. The reasoning? If someone figures one out, then you've essentialy given them permission to try that on the rest.
|
| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 4/27/2008 8:18:41 AM | | The biggest problem with online anything is the user. They refuse to use proper anti-virus or spyware & don't scan their machine. Their machine invariably gets infected with a keystroke logger and they're owned. | |
|
| BEWARE!! Online banking fraud Posted: 4/27/2008 7:49:50 PM | | I'm running Norton Anti-Virus and it scans automatically every week. Is that good enough? My bro-in-law deals with computers and he hates this program. (but he's a butthead). | |
