| Yankee Pitcher Dies in Plane Crash Posted: 10/11/2006 3:17:05 PM | This is not a redundant thread under Sports or Current Events.
It is a horrible, tragic event that has taken place today. All baseball fans should be having a moment of silence before tonight's games, out of respect for Lidle, his family, and his team.

| Yankee Pitcher Dies in Plane Crash Posted: 10/11/2006 3:42:43 PM | | That really puts things in perspective now doesn't it? The games are meaningless, and all the talk about them losing now seems so silly after this. It just shows how fragile life is and how fast it can change. My sympathies to his family and friends......... | |

| Yankee Pitcher Dies in Plane Crash Posted: 10/11/2006 4:14:05 PM | The New York City medical examiner's office initially said four people died in the crash, but later lowered that number to two. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner confirmed that Lidle was among the dead.
"This is a terrible and shocking tragedy that has stunned the entire Yankees organization," he said in a statement.
"I offer my deepest condolences and prayers to his wife Melanie, and son Christopher, on their enormous loss."
Lidle played for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003. He was traded to New York from Philadelphia in late July.
Very sad. | |

| Yankee Pitcher Dies in Plane Crash Posted: 10/11/2006 4:28:15 PM | lets have one for the people he took out with him as well
Though I may be wrong, I highly doubt he was piloting the plane when it crashed. Two people in the plane...one of them was his instructor. The law enforcement official said the plane had issued a distress call before the crash. With an instructor in the plane and having put in a distress call it sounds like there was a malfuction with the plane as opposed to pilot error.
It's still a sad day for both their families.....

"...Isringhausen said Lidle was "quirky" and laughed as he recalled a practical joke Lidle and some teammates played on Peterson when they all worked in Oakland. Lidle had an identical twin brother, whom the players coaxed into taking Lidle's place for a bullpen session between starts. The brother actually knew how to throw a pitch, but he clearly was not throwing like Cory.
"Rick was yelling at him, 'What the hell are you doing? You're doing it all wrong. We've practiced this a million times,'" Isringhausen said. "We all got a big kick out of it."
Peterson seemed most shaken by the news. At a time when his biggest concern should have been Tom Glavine's pitch count in Game 1, Peterson was summoned to the interview room to discuss the strange death of a man with whom he worked closely for two seasons.
"It's horrific," Peterson said. "It's almost unbelievable. It's like a surreal moment. There's no way this could happen. I think it just goes to show how insignificant some of the things that we think are significant really are. We're about to play a baseball game, and how important is that, really?
"You feel like your soul is just totally bruised right now." ..."

| Yankee Pitcher Dies in Plane Crash Posted: 10/12/2006 2:05:39 PM | | Not to take anything away from his death, because it is sad when a six year old loses his father. But is it more news that he died in a plane crash, or he died flying the plane into a building in NYC? Did ESPN talk about it for 12 hours because it was tragic, or for a second it reminded new yorkers of 9/11? The story was turned into a plane hitting a building that just happened to have a pitcher in it. | |

| Yankee Pitcher Dies in Plane Crash Posted: 10/12/2006 4:53:57 PM | He may not be a Yankee anymore which is neither here nor there when he is not a husband, son, brother, or father anymore. I also think with this accident we will see a microscope be put on what pro athletes do on their spare time. Which is unfair. In this situation I dont believe he was out to hurt himself or anyone else.....he just had a love for flying. It was a great loss and god rest his soul. | |
