Is 'clean shaven' now the norm for women under 40?Page 1 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
(I did look through older threads but everything seemed to involve preference... which is not the question here).

I actually asking this for a friend... she says she feels a lot of pressure to get herself waxed completely bald of hair down below... it's not really her own aesthetic but she now believes it's 'the standard of personal grooming for women under 40'...
Previously I'd thought it was something practiced only by certain 'stylish' cliques of women... but according to my friend's friends 'everybody' is doing it...
Is that true?

If that's the case I must have not been paying attention...

unless you are in a relationship where it seems important, I wouldn't bother with more then just keeping it trimmed to a reasonable length. seems like a happy medium between effort and reward.

I do think a lot of women, especially younger women are completely shaved or waxed down there, but I don't think it's the standard of personal grooming. It's like saying most women under 40 do not have very short hair therefore longer hair is the standard of personal grooming. I honestly think that your hair down there is your own business and you should do what you want with it. If you want it to be long enough to braid, grow it out. If you want it neatly trimmed, trim it, if you want to be completely bald do it. Hell even dye it purple if you want.

I will add a little bit in here about the fact that most men aren't fond of oral on women who are extremely bushy, but if you do a bit of trimming down there they're not adverse to it.

And another note, I'm 22 and think the completely bald look is gross. I'm sorry but I don't want to look 10 years old and if a guy finds only that attractive well too bad for him.

Completely bald being the trend? Tough to say... you're meeting two different perspectives, that of the woman, and that of her male partner (or female who knows). One think I think is a safe bet, 100% natural is nearly non-existant. Besides that, this is a preference post... if anyone has a real answer... well that speaks for itself doesn't it?

I've never run into a woman who shaved... but then most of my friends are kind of 'Bohemian-ish'

Actually it is more the norm and kind of an expectation for most guys. I rarely run into a woman in the last five years that wasn't totally clean regardless of her age or status. (even thought about opening a waxing shop !) I know every guy I know prefers it nice and clean, at most a "landing strip" if you MUST have hair. Waxing is the best method. Alot smoother, no bumps and it lasts longer. The longer you continue to do it. The les the hair comes back in most cases. So if you really like/want, expect a guy to spend some "face time" down there, make it bare. He'll want to spend alot more time and attention on you, and you'll find it more sensitive as well. At least try it once and you'll be convinced after the first licking.

good luck !

I did notice the other day, when looking at my roommate's Playboy magazine, that ALL the women were shaved... and I found it somewhat off-puting... but Playboy IS pretty mainstream.

I'm tempted to agree with the 'little-girl' thing...
Sindbad might go for that, but not me...

OK i have always wanted to address this issue. i agree in trimming and all . but no hair at all is so not cool or clean. first its so like a little girl i cant see why men like it. and secoundly hair is there for a reson. it keeps us from sweating to much and getting to hot (belive it or no) and it cuts down on the infections some of us are prone to. its the fluff between you and your partner to stop chaffing and the painful bump of bones crashing together in the heat of the moment. it also is there so a mammals we see that we are grown ups and ready to have sex and babys so why take it off we are animals why not accept it. and to end my argument i would have to say its not about his comfort when hes on the job down there but about how we are made and why we have hair to begin with.

^ Son of gun, I never thought about the utility of body hair in axial (underarm) and pubic areas..but I think SS is right! Underarm area is quick way to take a body core temp reading. Thermal regulation is achieved by spreading perspiration over a high surface area (hairs) via evaporative cooling process; same must be true in groin. My guess is that it might be pretty important to control thermal conditions for sanity reasons, we wouldn't retain body hair. Learn something new everyday at POF.

This shaving is a fad. If women want to do it, fine. Don't expect women to toe the line to a fad, however, unless you want to be held to the same standard of grooming.

I would have to say to each their own!

I personaly, Like a woman who is groomed or bald. I Love oral but hate hair. a little on top is ok, but nothing from the anus to the top. Yes hair helps with sweating and other things but it also holds orders as well. Oh god I think I am going to gag! But in regards to all that, I keep myself shaved as well. I have yet to get negative feedback yet!

It keeps the kitty from sweating?! Wow, I never realized the importance of not letting my kitty get too hot! What about the rest of my body---what's supposed to cool it?

its the fluff between you and your partner to stop chaffing and the painful bump of bones crashing together in the heat of the moment.

Umm, I'm 45 and I've yet to feel "the painful crush of bones crashing together"! Oh, lol...
And hair is supposed to stop that from happening?!

it also is there so a mammals we see that we are grown ups and ready to have sex and babys so why take it off we are animals why not accept it. and to end my argument i would have to say its not about his comfort when hes on the job down there but about how we are made and why we have hair to begin with.

You mean we need to look down below to be able to determine we're grown ups? Wow, how do you explain young preteens that have pubic hair?

I thought it was to trap our scent for mating puposes? :)

Hey, all:

Pubic hair has long been recognized as a secondary sex characteristic, one of a suite of developmental changes that occur in puberty, when sexual function begins. When we wuz all nekkid, it was easy to see who was 'ready' and who wudent.

If pubic hair had a functional impact on heat or moisture exchange, we would all be hairy or bald all our lives. Other supposed purposes are really just too silly to intertain--I have never seen or been with anyone whose pubic hair was a cushion! Hah!!

Sombient is correct, though, it is certainly a fad: one day we'll hear that 'bushy is the new bald'!--which in itself is a big bunch of foolishness. There is another thread here on this, and there I pointed out shaving is probably a product of the porn industry seeping (or sweeping) into popular culture. Skimpy bikinis, etc., also contribute to the trend.

As far as aesthetics, I am old enough and lucky enough to have experienced both bare and bushy and it doesn't make ANY difference. In this case it is what is at the end of the trip, not the trip itself. And if a woman has an odor, hair is not the culprit. That is a function of hygiene and diet, having nothing to do with how much hair she has or doesn't have. Same conditions apply to men as well. There may be a slight correlation between personal pride, hygiene, and shaving, but it is not causative. Eliminate shaving and the same conditions would prevail.

Women are beautiful, with any degree of pubic hair. Some people are just much too picky or spoiled, or misguided, or fad-driven, or something....

Ok, so what I'm getting here is that it's NOT as common as my friend has been pressured into believing...

I'm wondering how it got started at all... how men started preferring it of late... (I'm guessing that male preferrance has a lot to do with it... though none of my male friends do).

It seems to go along with women wearing thongs... which a lot of 'mainstream' men seem to prefer for some reason (I suspect it has to do with a fondness for strip-clubs and porn... which used to be the only place you'd be likely to see such a thing).

Gotta go with it looks like a little girl to me. It kinda creeps me out that guys like that and even EXPECT it!

I've done it but there's some serious chafing if you're going commando in tight jeans.

Keep it trimmed nice and short.

My friend bleaches her hair. Use a product called Jolen, you can pick it up at any drugstore. Remember to read the instructions!

It is the thing I think. My little sister is 25 and has been completely shaved for many years. And it isn't just women under 40 ~ the women that I know that much about are all clean shaven, including my Aunt (53), my mother (62) and myself (42.) Once I realized the health/hygiene benefits, there is NO way I'd be any other way.

Gotta go with it looks like a little girl to me.

If any man looks at a post-pubescent woman thinking she looks like a child, he has a serious issue. There is NO mistaking an adult woman's anatomy when compared with a pre-pubescent girl. Shaving may not be for everyone ~ but to insinuate it's something perverted, sick or twisted is not only closed-minded, but grossly inaccurate. To each their own.

I don't think age has anything to do with it. Under 40 or over 40, doesn't matter. It's a personal preference for many men and women alike. If it feels good, go for it. I am shaven, and love it.

I'm a fan of the 70's afro... As long as I'm the only weed in the flower garden, undergrowth wouldn't bother me...

I've only experienced the cleanliness of hairless-ness though, so I can't speak directly from experience :P

Sorry, I know I contributed nothing to this thread here...just stating my feelings are all :)

i like them all... but if you can't keep it SMOOTH all the time (cause the pricklies HURT and are very unattractive) I'd rather it be nice and soft....

In fact, save the shaving for irregular intervals, to spice things up -- surprise him with that "super soft" just shaved feel.... and then grow it out a bit....

And... gosh... sometimes i feel like a freakin' pedophile lustn after all that BALD koochie. Looks kind of like chicken too... (some old joke).... Yikes!

Little girl? Please. When your knocking boots with someone boobs in your face and a$$ rocking hard, are you seriously going to stop and think "hey, shes creeping me out looking like a prepubescent girl down south......"
cripes its been so long for me, i forgot what having hair there is like. I personally keep it that way because I get greater sensation with it being that way during sex.
Also like my man to be at the least, tightly trimmed. No one likes natures dental floss, it makes for those awkward sex moments.......
