| Blocking users from Africa, Romania, Turkey, India, Russia etc. Posted: 10/20/2006 6:48:48 PM | And those pesky scammers still try to get in by giving false location information. Quite often they give themselves away by posting bad English translation text in their profiles and messages.
The ones that make me laugh are when they say they are looking for someone who is honest, yet they say they are in the United States when in fact, they are not.

Scammers are everywhere, not just Africa, Romania, Turkey, India, Russia
There is just a higher percent from these countries (like stated previously in thread)
Don't take it personally.
I don't think the scammers are actually from those countries, but there are a huge number of insecure proxies that are available for those areas, and they are used by people to scam.
Ah, the days of having an ip address on irc reading NOONE@MAIL.RU :)

This is a FREE site with one admin. Its also bigger then the next five sites combined was I believe the statistic quoted. This site would be a mess and a zoo if not for the restrictions and filters in place.
THANKS POF!!

I've got entire blocks of IP's banned on my server from some of these same countries trying to root my *nix box.

The list is much longer, the reason is % of scammers. Bingo. @dennis070488:
i think u just been racist im Russian so what u trying to say im here to spam and scam? It has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with geographical location.
The vast majority of emails/users, etc originating IN Russia, destined for sites that serve the west, are spammers and scammers.
@n3t k1lla:
I don't think the scammers are actually from those countries, but there are a huge number of insecure proxies that are available for those areas, and they are used by people to scam. Not true. Spam is very, VERY highly organised, and conducted by large criminal organisations. You don't have some little old lady sitting in her kitchen blasting ads for V1agra. (her computer may be if it's been infected, but it ain't her).
@Dennis070488 (again):
Im an admin on a diffrerent forums and do u know how many spammers and scamers per day i ban from Canada,USA,Australia and so on? And dont let me start on craigslist.org ok The USA is the source of most of the spam in the world - becuase it has the most computers, and therefor the home of most infected machines. And lets' be clear here - the most recent numbers indicate that between 93-95% of all email is spam. What you see in your inbox is only a very, very small percentage of what is actually sent - most is filtered out, at great expence, by ISPs before it even has a chance to hit your personal spam filter. But when you're talking about scammers, most are *not* from western countries. If you get an email from a US IP here, there is a small chance (1%, number picked from my arse) that is it a scammer. But if you get an email from a Russian or African IP, that small chance goes up to 98% (picked from the other side of my arse).
Only the site admins know the true numbers - but the difference is that dramatic.
y'all forgetting how many fake accounts and spammers are on here from US as well, i ran into 2 myself less then in a month on here. And you would have run into 200 if Africa, Russia, etc wern't blocked.
Again - remember, what they are blocking is the originating IP, not the person, race, nor nationality.
If I move to Moscow tomorrow, I won't be able to post here. You are in the US, so you can. It has nothing to do with race.

Like every other major site we block users from Africa, Romania, Turkey, India, Russia etc. Posted: 7/10/2009 12:24:47 AM | It seems it doesn't matter whether a site is pay or free anymore, the scammers seem to find a way to finagle their ways in....Just think if all the people who claimed to work in West Africa or be solicitors to estateless or other dead folks, not to mention lonely Russian women looking for husbands-and I'm a female, no way looking for another woman, unless she's good at cleaning or organizing-really were who or what they claimed to be. Those places would be pretty crowded, and there'd be lots of American women ticked off at women trolling for their guys...I hope we all realize the solicitors or lawyers are a scam, regardless of where their scam letters originate from...Still, I have no idea how they manage to get through spam/scam barriers, guess they're excellent hackers...?

I actually went to Ghana to help them with their spamming problem... many of the ISPs there just hired people with masters degress or PhDs in IT, they didn't necessarily have to know anything about security.
I found that about 80% of the network traffic going out of the country was just continuous spam messages. Many of the ISP's mail servers were open-relays, and the people there had absolutely no idea.
I imagine more than %50 of the emails coming from Ghana as spam originated elsewhere. Anyway, it was pretty cool after I closed down their open relays and taught them a little bit about security... the local internet speed just about tripled. All they have there is wireless APs connecting to each other throughout the city, and very few people actually have access.
That was a very interesting network setup/configuration... well and country in general. I still have like 4 million cedis...
