| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/22/2006 2:20:37 PM | I think a soul is the essence of self, our true being. Our life energy. Our naked being without boundaries/borders. That which we are when all ego is gone, when all but "that which is and is not" exists. A soul is you and I (and the universe) in a flux of sensation with all that "exists". It is all that is and is not. A soul is the hand of God or that which is God. A soul is the truth and nothing but the truth so help me God. A soul is the existence of what was and will never be again.
Does it really exist?
Yes and no. It exists in that we may believe it to exist but it does not exist in that we do not know of how, when or why it exists. We are slowly learning and one day THE soul will exist in a way it may be understood but mostly because we will be able to understand.
A soul is "the touch of God" THE soul is God
Now ask me what "God" is.

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/22/2006 2:30:39 PM | I understand the soul as being a universal force upon which all things draw their existance, we bud or spore from this universal soul. As an individual we each experience a unique physical existence as our mind veiled by sense perception works as the seat of our own soul which ultimately longs to be reunited with the super soul. This inspires our quest for enlightenment or knowledge of our higher self. The more righteous our lives become, the closer our own soul is to the super soul, ultimately being returned in its completeness upon the death of our mortal bodies.
Perceive the soul as undivided when you are not distracted by your sense perception.

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/22/2006 6:25:00 PM | Doornumber1 if you search for this thread you will find that I already have asked you and others to:
Define God from your perspective.
Please post there because you may be going off topic here with your reply but if you think it is on topic please let me know what God is to you here. I would still love to see you post your definition of God at the other thread as well. Who knows you may even find some interesting reading there, if you take the time to check it out.
I tend to agree, for the most part with both of you guys on this one. Perhaps we are in good company here. Let's see who else, if anyone, decides to post about the Soul.

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/22/2006 7:26:25 PM | What is a soul? I myself have done a lot of soul-searching this weekend. This poem sums it up for me...
LOST SOUL: In this heartless creation It is hard to understand Why some souls choose to wander Forgetting
Yet I am lost without wandering My life is a ghost Ancient with wisdom Vital with tears Not able to move Not able to let go
It's hard to remember a love You don't recognize in this life Yet the memory is there even without thinking The love has no mercy
My soul longs to redo the mistakes it has made Hastingly one was made that I regret If only I could take it back My soul would not be filled with remorse My soul longs for the moments It can show just how much My soul would like to share adventures with That special someones heart, life & touch.
The soul can endure so much that is true Yet when you anguish over a mistake It is truly your heart and soul That cries out to.

another title for this ? might also be: - "so"ul" what?" heh heh
"AHEM"- I believe a person has a SOUL -a BODY -and a SPIRIT. This would mean that a person is of a "tripartite" nature.
That is why the Bible says that man was made in "in the image of God" (Gen. 1:27) A man has a body. A man has a soul. A man has a spirit. God has a body, Jesus Christ. God has a soul, God the Father. God has a spirit, the Holy Spirit. Man is made in the image of God. He has a tripartite nature.
Everything on this earth can be broken down into "three's" before you get through. If you want to see the extent of which you can go, look at time, space, and matter. I mean, energy is some form of matter that has been transformed or put back in force. There are just three things out there- time, space, and matter. You break down time, and you get past, present, and future- three things. You break down space, and you get length, width, and depth- three things. It will come down to three's every time. There is the atmosphere, the ionoshere, and the stratosphere. Outside of that is the exosphere. On one side of the Atlantic there is North America, Central America, and South America. On the other side of the Atlantic is Europe, Africa, and Asia. People come from three extractions: Mongoloid, Negroid, and "Caucasoid." The same goes for music, art, color, and the whole thing. A family consists of a man, a woman, and children.
The Bible was written in Greek, Aramaic, and Hebrew.
One of my favorite renowned apostles (He penned most of the inspired New Testament you know) puts it in these terms:
"I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it." ~Thessalonians 5:23-24
These three words ( Spirit, soul, body ), are never spelled the same but different. They are not the same in Hebrew, they are not the same in Greek, and they are not the same in English. Therefore, you know that they are not the same.
The part of us that is spirit is like "wind". Look at the greek word "pneuma". What is pneumonia? It is trouble with your air. A pneumatic drill is a drill driven by compressed air. Man has a spirit in him. Now, everybody in the world has the same spirit. The Bible says, "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? ............" 1st Cor. 2:11
Now it gets trickier. The following is my interpretation of God's inspired word. I do not mean to offend anyone here and I write these things out of love for my fellow man or woman. They are things about our spiritual condition that I believe to be true and I form them from my own cognitive spiritual experiences and/or knowledge. In all this- I do promise to stay on topic.
I believe that if you have never been born again, you have a spirit in you, the spirit of man, but it is a "DEAD" spirit. How do you know that? Read John 3:5-7, "Except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." See? So, if a man is not regenerated by God's Spirit, he has a dead spirit. How do you know that he is dead?
The Bible says in Ephesians 2:1, "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins." So, an unregenerated person is dead. They have a LIVE SOUL, but a DEAD SPIRIT.
Now, what about your soul? What is your SOUL??
In the Bible, the soul has a bodily shape. How do we know that?
Revelation 6:9 says, " I saw under the altar the souls...." You can SEE them. Verses 10-11 say, "And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them....." Do you see that? White robes." A soul can wear a robe.
Now that soul has a bodily shape. Consider a football. The outside is leather, and inside that leather is an inner tube. That inner tube is shaped just like the football. That inner tube represents your soul. If you put air in the football, it is one football, but there are three separate items.

The soul is simply another word for the spirit. Our body is a covering..for our spirit! The spirit.......is Our Soul......
The part of us... that will descend into Heaven.. If we have lived our lives in accordance with him.
"Except a man be born of water and the spirit, they cannot enter the kingdom of God"
I believe that is called "baptism"
The bible speaks in metaphoric form,in any language! symbolically spoken..spiritually inclined..to be written as such.
To be born again?
We are born only once, with a free-will..to either choose God.. or not; and in choosing we seek out his light...The Holy Spirit..
We can also choose to acknowledge some of his words...or all of them, and in regards to your post' of an deciphering nature.. remember what it states in the bible as well...to not attempt to try to figure out what is and will remain mysterys'
It is a waste of Time!! YOu Read, You Pray for understanding, And through the The holy spirit..You will understand..his message. and all that you understand is all you 'need' to understand!
It also states that no man, shall take from or add to .the bible..
God is not complicated..but man can surely complicate his words.. by attempting to decipher it,which only leads to unecessary confusion!
Keep it simple and to the point...Jesus Did!!

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/22/2006 10:30:14 PM | I've always felt that the soul is like the womb of the spirit with the spirit being our personality/ego and the soul being that part that is eternal and everlasting and in contact with that which is the answer to what everyone seems to be searching for. Unfortunately, people can not seem to even agree that it is with us and without us and is always with us, if we are in "tune" with what is does, its cause and effect. I use tune for lack of a better word.
Free your mind and the rest will follow........
Childs prayer from the 18th century
Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.

llama911 God is often considered the Ultimate Creator. Likewise our personal creative powers are often attributed to our human imagination. Might one say that imagination could be God in us. Therefore giving us a logical conclusion that our human imagination could be tied directly to our soul.
Or would you consider this a misuse of your thinking on this subject, if you see it as such would you care to elaborate? I already feel as though I've learned something fresh and intriguing from you and perhaps I could learn even more. I welcome your comments anytime llama911.
Waves..... Thank you for you vote of confidence in me but I am not sure what the soul is that is why I asked the question. I think that message two and three are good and, of course, llama911s comment as well. I'm still considering fitman2005's comments.
"We can also choose to acknowledge some of his words...or all of them, and in regards to your post' of an deciphering nature.. remember what it states in the bible as well...to not attempt to try to figure out what is and will remain mysterys"
Waves thank you for clearing that up for me, can you give me a book, chapter and verse on this Bible quote of yours:
"to not attempt to try to figure out what is and will remain mysterys"
I'll try not to decipher it too much. But I can't help but to ask just one question regarding this comment. How do we know what "is and will remain a mystery" so we don't waste too much time trying to figure these mysteries out?
Fitman2005 I'm not too clear on what your comments had to do with the question directly, for the most part. What does "so"ul" what" mean to you"? Then you said you see everything as having three aspects? When you described the soul you only said that it can wear a white robe according to Revelation 6:9. Then you compared it to a football inner tube. I like the fact that you took the time to respond in such length and give a scriptural reference but I think I somehow missed your opinion. What three things or anything make up the soul?
All I seem to be able to deduct from your comment is that the soul can wear a white robe and if you believe it is like the inner tube of a football then perhaps you believe it can also hold air. I count two attributes, I am still looking for the third and I just can't seem to see what you see the soul as except a wearer of clothes and perhaps a holder of air. Please correct me if I"m not following your reasoning on what a soul is? I enjoyed reading your response, Fitman2005, I'm just rather confused after considering what you wrote. But that OK if you choose not to elaborate further on your perspective. I've become quite comfortable with confusion and just try to focus on the overall entertainment value of the whole existence thing.
Eye8one2 is it with us, without us or with us? I'm confused for real now.

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/23/2006 1:19:57 AM | I meant "within us and without us (it can go from us or what we deem as our body or being and communicate on its own without our ego or spirit being aware (kinda of like what Edgar Cayce accomplished in his sleeping prophet state). It is always with us when we are no going against what it is and what it is align with which is the universal cause and effect.
Mans personal cause and effect that results from his participation in this somewhat magical journey within the material realm is generally detrimental to spiritual and soulful living which the soul is in tune with. To me, this is this barrier and the soul only knows cause and effect that is related to the universe while the ego (our spirit and personality) wants to be both the cause and effect and be rewarded from the action for selfish reasons that are accomplished without considering the effect of what they do and how their actions and the consquences that are then laid upon others, generally innocents. You know, like how some man take claim to others property, peoples, resourses in the other peoples lands they kill and destroy for profit and power. These peolpe have no soul and no spirit, they are the walking dead and wish for all to join them in praising them or die for their benefit, but theyare truly worthy and have the full support of those who many consider to be their link to that universal omnipresent intellegence that is simply cause and effect that man can not and never will understand because it has to do with truth that is unattainable to one who lies.
Man is generally a greedy selfish beast and when his soul is helpless, his spirit is condemed to live over and over again until he gets it right and gets in tune....8) Right in tune (think thats from the Who).
Just my thoughts and discoveries along my personal journey with no blindfold placed upon my face covering my eyes, put their by a tour guide who is more then available and willing to tell me what I could be seeing if only I could see. I wonder if they actually tell you truth about what you can not see but they can see it and it is withthem exclusively, not the other guys, not the competition.

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/23/2006 3:42:36 AM | The soul??? That part of us that is immutable and eternal ~ and particular to each of us. It is the part of us that survives our physical death ~ although what *really* happens to it is unknown by any of us ~ and perhaps rightly so.
I think also that while we may lose touch with our soul thus leaving us with the impression that it has been corrupted and/or damaged beyond repair, I think we have the ability to re-connect with our souls. Not always an easy task but one that is worth the effort and energy. Spirituality is the means by which our soul finds expression.

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/23/2006 7:44:16 AM | We Pentecostals say the soul is the mind, will and emotions. And God's word is said to be sharper than any two edged sword able to divide between the soul and spirit alike bone from marrow.
The heart and this is the centre of the spirit, and so the spirit and soul continue after dying in the body. The sense of self goes on. The mind is not generated by the brain and science doesn't say much of where it comes from or goes. The soul is superficial compared to your heart and to be genuine you must speak from your heart, not just your mind.
|
| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/23/2006 12:05:34 PM | | The part of you that can never die. It's also your spiritual side, but if you don't believe in anything you probably won't use it very much. It's hard to describe what a soul is, but I think it's the part of everyone that is good. | |
|
| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/23/2006 12:18:27 PM | | The soul is an illusion. Let me explain. The soul/mind or if it suits you, your " essense" is a misnomer from a neuroscientific point of view. There is no "I", it is in fact a"we". We in the sense that your mind is a manifestation of multiple specialized neurological processes. When I say specialized, I mean for example, you have specific neuronic correlates for language, for logic and reason, spatiality, emotions etc etc. These faculties of consciousness processes information very quickly and so it gives one the illusion of well..oneness. That is why if you have a stroke, some part of your brain may die or become so damaged, it no longer functions properly so in fact " a part of you dies" , perhaps your short term memory, maybe your ability to recognize certain objects, people or more commonly wildlife but yet you are still you in every other sense. Neuroscientist have shown that if you sever the corpus callesum, that bundle of nerve fibres that bridge the two hemispheres, you will literally have two consciousness. One quite independent of the other. | |

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/23/2006 6:53:41 PM | @Waves:
"The spirit.......is Our Soul......"
-not what I see in the scripture -as I already touched on. They are distinct. No mysteries, -it speaks plainly.
"To be born again?
We are born only once, with a free-will..to either choose God.. or not; and in choosing we seek out his light...The Holy Spirit..
"It also states that no man, shall take from or add to .the bible.."
- so you would nullify Christ's teaching on this spiritual new-birth?? Jesus said: " That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." John 3:6,7. This does not just speak of water baptism but rather a new birth given thru the Holy Spirit. How much simpler can that be? So basically, you are stating that Jesus didn't know what he was talking about. And are you hinting that I could be adding to the Bible what is not there?? Seems like someone might be taking away rather to me.
"Keep it simple and to the point...Jesus Did!!"
- He did? Then why did so many people not understand Him at the time??
Fitman2005 I'm not too clear on what your comments had to do with the question directly, for the most part. What does "so"ul" what" mean to you"? Then you said you see everything as having three aspects? When you described the soul you only said that it can wear a white robe according to Revelation 6:9. -that's ok Tim that's why we're here to help you along. Just pass the pigskin ok?
I'll bet you're really confused now.
Soul what? -you'll get over it soon enough. About that football. You counted two attributes and you would be right- the air would be the third. Though I must admit -I was starting to worry about you.
Air is what gives life to the football much like the Holy Spirit gives life to our spirit along with our soul which is eternal. I can't just talk about one without the others as I believe they coexist. The soul has a visible shape in the kingdom of God and I also believe it has a shape even now within all of us. (see Revelation 6:9.)
As for wearing robes-yes that is what is described exactly as it reads.
If you ever got dressed in the morning you might pick up on some more of this. lol

Titanvalley, if the soul is superficial compared to the heart and the spirit is the center of the heart then what do you see the spirit as?
Christie129 your comment that "it's the part of everyone that is good." leaves me with the obvious question of what represents the part of us that likes to behave mischievously?
Webhead01 cool news about the brain functions. So we should just eliminate the term I completely. The new way of thinking of ourselves could be better described by saying "we think therefore we are".

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/23/2006 10:31:17 PM | Hey tim the soul man?????
I do recall in a previous post or yours, on this thread, (that if you need to learn how to sew..then take a class)
You stated you have "accepted Jesus Christ"
Very interesting..if that to be so.............
Then why would you be so confused..????????? He is the Father the son and the Holy spirit!
so to accept him..is to know him...and in turn.... To believe and have faith in him ...and follow his teachings....is not to question..that in which he only. ......holds the answers for!!
I don't have to quote the scriptures, in which i speak of the words....His words are instilled in me....I don't feel the need to say 'he said/she said"
That is quite irrelevant..here..don't you think?
Are you confused Tim...or rather turning the waves... to create unbiased storms within them..
That persons poem(ISOrealismnotperfection)..which you did not understand either was quite clear ....But it takes a depth of perception.. and a spiritual understanding...to know such...
as the bible is written metaphorically and symbolically.. (there is quite a beauty in that) and is written so to cover....not just one aspect...but branches thereof.
To accept christ is to heed to his words...and not question that in which is not humanly possible ..to know.. What is the Soul???
THE SOUL IS...WHO WE ARE.....WE CAN EITHER MAKE IT...OR BREAK IT!! THE ESSENCE OF OUR BEING..IN UNION WITH CHRIST!
Now if your going to get on that horse...with your halo' on....Make sure you know how to control the reigns...

|
| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/23/2006 11:14:09 PM | fitman:(you have misinterpreted my posts)
I was simply stating..the fact that no one should attempt to dilude themselves by taking God's words...and in turn miscontruing them!!
It is thru the Soul/spirit...that we come to acceptance, and a spirtual understanding of his words...thru prayer...humbling of oneself...to him.. we will rise with him and in him....'You simply call it born again'
The Journey to Jesus..is not a short one...but a learning one...and if we continue to question everything....instead of relying on him to guide us, through our prayers...and our love for him; We would not go further... on the path....but remain stifled in our own ...foolishness...with one step forward....then too many back again....
The bible is written metaphorically for the good of all man/woman! There are many vines on the branches...it not wise to tie them in knots.
Understanding: metaphorically and symbolically spoken.............. so the branches may reach out to many...not just one.....SOUL!!
My intentions are not to offend..but to clarify...to the best of my ability.....as the world we live in now...Is lacking the moral stability and iniquity...Of God!
The Soul Is who we Are! Without Jesus in our hearts....our souls would remain empty!!

I am in no need of a tour guide, I can see clearly now.
People often offer their services to those who wish to take the unenlightened journey and simply opt for the blindfold. You can even pay your travel insurance policy on the weekly payment plan, the nice toup operators simply pass a plate around and they'll take care of your journey.
This is the easier softer way and certainly time saving. Thats why it is so popular, just let someone else coordinate your path and tell you what's ahead, what's behind and above. Save on the bother of learning what the truth is, just let someone else tell you where you are going and what you are seeing and put your faith in the booking agents and jump on the blindfold wagon, lot's of room.
It certainly is the simple way. They even have big buildings where the blindfolded travellers meet on Sundays with the lead tour guy dressing up in a nice uniform. Quite the presentation, I also bought a seat but something told me to pass on the trip and walk the path towards my goal, quite a view.
If you are on the tour, just tell him your hungry and they'll even tell you what you should eat.

| What is a Soul? Posted: 10/24/2006 9:52:03 AM | The heart is the very centre as is what heart means. And Solomon mentions the centre of the heart.
The heart is spirit and the spirit is spirit. Extending in a form, throught the body. Life. God's breath in you. From the Spirit spirit. And the soul is further from the heart, like above it, not as much your essence.
You can mindfully know, act and think. You can act in love from the mind, and offer mental ascent, or you can love deeply from your heart and act sincerely from your heart. One acts the other is for real.
Once an Irishman asked me the simple question, "If someone will act like they love you, why isn't that just as good as real love?" Difficult to answer him. One day we may have robots that enact love... I value the heart thought and heart love. And Isaiah mentions lip service.

Webhead essentialy elaborated for me. The soul is nothing it is fiction as it is popularly defined(See above). I would have no problem with complete elimination of the term (except for the purpose of historical record of course). Since you mentioned god it is another term that I wouldn't mind seeing go the way of the dodo.
