| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/23/2006 6:29:41 PM | I read on the UK Form the following.....
It was reported in the Daily Telegraph that a BBC survey of those who use an online dating service found that 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles. The information generally relates to age, income and marital status.
The report continued:"One such site member, a Mr.Vincent Fourstar, 54, an unemployable bus-driver from Antigua, poured scorn upon the findings. "I can't see why anyone would supply a false profile. Sure, we all play a few games on the site, but it's just a bit of fun. Take this weekend - three women from my site, Helen, Angela, and some red-head from Dorset, all think I'm taking them away for a romantic trip to Paris, when the reality is, I'm celebrating my 15th wedding anniversary with my wife down here in Cornwall. I'm sure they'll see the funny side, and we'll all have a good laugh about this one day."
(in this case/example it was a man, but visa versa of course...).
Is it really as bad as the survey found? Reading the forums on here, it seems like many of us had a date with someone, who bears little or no resemblance to the person we were expecting.
What's your thought on this?

| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/23/2006 6:50:02 PM | Sigi: I just heard something similar to this from an audiobook I had last weekend. The book is FREAKONOMICS and analyses social phenomena, including internet dating sites. The author's comments ran along the lines of "how interesting that most single men on these sites are taller and earn more money than the average population" while "there are more slender blondes per capita on dating sites than there are in the real world". In other words, people tend to exaggerate the qualities they think the opposite sex finds desirable. Read it if you have the chance; you'll never trust the media again! | |

| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/23/2006 6:59:52 PM | I must be in the 20% minority then. I'm proud to say my profile is honest! Why lie? If I lied in my profile I would get incompatible women responding. So I tell the truth with the hope of meeting someone who actually has things in common with me. | |

| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/23/2006 7:36:41 PM | | Well, I doubt it's that bad. Or intentionally that bad, anyway. I've met three men from this site and the only discrepancy I'd care to mention is height. And even then, I'm a firm believer that many men honestly believe they're taller than they actually are, especially as we get older. More than one man (in real life, not an Internet guy) has challenged me on my height. Yeah, I'm five-four (tops five-four and one-half). They say, you can't be, because I'm five-10, five-11, six foot, whatever. Um, no you're not. Sorry. Men must shrink, I figure. | |

| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/23/2006 9:47:24 PM | "supplying false details" is entirely different than lying, in the eyes of the person supplying the details, IMO.
For example, who hasn't shaved a few pounds off their drivers license?
or added an inch (in height!!)
Is coloring/dying ones hair considered "supplying false details"?
Are we talking about "lying by omission"?
Does "we broke up because we decided we weren't right for each other" translate into "she broke up with me because she found me in bed with her sister"?
BTW, I'm in the 20% of the honest ones!!

| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/23/2006 10:07:33 PM | I think if you are genuinely looking to find someone here, especially for a long term relationship as I am, then you have to be honest about who you are. What would be the point in telling false things about yourself or what your looking for? Thats never going to find you what you want...

| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/23/2006 11:07:29 PM | | I have done a few dozen personality profiles with different friends with one or two people that know the profilee intimately, a basic test consists of 160 positive traits and 160 negative traits explored in that order. In my estimation 60% had challenges picking only one positive trait and equal difficulty discovering thier negative attributes exist, hence the intimate knowlege can amazingly enough reveal said traits quite easily. Perhaps its not intentional lying, rather its a lack of self exploration. By accepting these negatives we give ourselves the ability to adress the root causes to many of our personal challenges thus the ability to improve our lives by overcoming or compensating for ones major weakness's, The result being , over a period of years we become well rounded individuals at peace with who and what we are. This of course would be a huge disaster for the pharmacutical companys ,psychiatrists , lawyers, and the military complex, knowing theses groups are essential to our survival as a species,I can not morally suggest EVERYONE do a test or three and get to know themselves better. Thats all for now, its time fir my meds | |

| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/23/2006 11:24:31 PM | Awesome post ripptide!
Myself I've been contemplating a bit of an experiment of sorts, which is to create a profile that is completely dishonest just to see how it works out! I haven't been having a great deal of luck, and I figure that has something to do with the fact that most people live in a complete consumeristic dreamworld of massive proportions. Who knows, maybe it's my illusion that I am managing to survive without doing it myself!!!
Maybe I will get back to you with my results! | |

| 80% admit to supplying false details on their profiles Posted: 10/24/2006 8:38:42 AM | I honestly didn't add any height to my profile, wish I could take some away~ I also didn't exaggerate anything except for my profession...LOL....and thats just because Im a smartas*. Im here for friends/forums anyway and most of my friends know me and know that Im sincere. I think it's sad that anyone would lie and play games...many people here are looking for the real deal....why waste anyones time? | |
