| Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide testers
Posted: 10/27/2006 3:16:10 PM | I know that it isnt conclusive, how those 2 children died in greece, but they are looking down the lines of carbon monoxide.
How many smoke alarms do you all have in your house, and what about a carbon monoxide detector.
I have smoke alarms in every room (apart from bathroom), I always have. I get them free as my mates a fireman and they give them out. I also encourage mates & family ect to have atleast 1 on each landing/floor.
I also have one of those monoxide testing cards, BUT I never knew they should be changed every 3 months (did you)
You can get a batery operated one that monitors the amount of monoxide for about £24, and I shall be investing in one tomorrow.
Hope if any of you dont have any of the above, this thread may make you get some tomorrow!!!

Posted: 10/27/2006 3:19:51 PM | Someone I know suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty boiler. luckily they were ok but were hospitalised for 2 weeks.
So I have a carbon monoxide detector and 2 mains smoke alarms. Helps me sleep a whole lot better when my daughter stays over.

What I find amazing is I supply and fit smoke alarms in all my rented out property's yet the amount of times I go round and see the battery taken out as its gone flat and been bleeping yet my tennants dont think to buy a new battery and install it. | |

Im amazed sometimes when I go round peoples houses, how many dont have smoke alarms. these days they are so small they arent really an eye sore.
Also it wouldnt take much to take one of those card monoxide detectors in your suitcase when going away, as I know alot of places/villas I stay in have boilers that look abit "past thier prime"

Although the smoke detector in the kitchen tends to go off when it feels like it...

my chest freezer (in spare bedroom) went faulty a few years ago..i kept waking up to this strange smell and going back to sleep..only for my son visiting(and for once having his key with him) he woke me up saying something was on fire..it immediately dawned on me it was smoke and cs gas fumes i could smell..luckily the electrics had tripped befor it went on fire.. | |

I have a carbon monoxide detector that is replaced when necessary by the housing associations.
Smoke detectors are definately something that everyone should have in their homes.
I had dozed off on the settee one morning, I had worked night shift the previous evening.
I was awakened by the smoke alarm, and when I opened the living room door I could smell and see smoke coming from the kitchen.
My heart was pounding and when I looked into the kitchen there was my son, who was around 3yrs old,standing on his chair in front of the microwave and there was charcoaled, flaming bread in the toaster.!!!
That was bad enough but
The little darling had decided to make himself scrambled egg and toast.
Inside the microwave was a bowl containing milk, butter and six whole eggs!!
I dread to think what kind of explosian the eggs would have created if he had figured out how to switch it on. | |

I remember an ex of mine had one fitted in the kitchen ,it was mad when we made toast the damm thing used to go beserk ,i'd do the tea towle shuffle ;-) and she'd run under the duvet ,bloody funny now I think about it. She could never work out why i liked toast so much lol | |

Posted: 10/28/2006 3:17:30 AM | Our local firemen did a stint in our Asda offering free checks and fire alarms, so I signed up. Not for the fire alarms of course, but just to have two beefy firemen come to my house.
No actually they fitted two fire alarms one at the bottom of the stairs and one at the top, and gave some good advice. And I have a carbon monoxide tester on my boiler.
Very good as it was all free. I was very impressed. | |

Carbon Monoxide detectors are between £4 - £20 I'd go for the best you can afford.

I brought a fireangle carbon monoxide alarm which cost me £24, argos do one too for £24
Yes it was allot, as I am a single mother, but id rather go without my bottle of wine tonight and a few other luxuries, and be safe with the twins!! | |

Posted: 10/28/2006 9:59:28 AM | I have suffered from carbonmonoxide poisoning and it is very unpleasent it is very simular to flu like symptoms. you also get a blinding headache and pain in your joints
symptoms include
headache
sickness/vomiting
overly tired/unusual drowseyness
joint pain/shooting pains
check your pilot light is blue and other appliances have a clear blue flame if it is yellow/orangish there might be a problem with the ventilation this can be expecially the case with gas fires (always get a reputable corgi reg gas man out)
if more than one person is showing the same symptoms please get checked by your gp or even nhs drop in centre asap
a relly of mine even had a blood test for leukemia until i went round to stay for the weekend and came down with the same symptoms
detectors are cheap and there are a disposable kind that has a strip in them that turns black if it is detected others that squeak like a firealarm. | |

Posted: 10/30/2006 2:32:15 PM | | when i moved into my home it had a brand new gas fire .. however the number of nights we all woke up (courtesy of my daughter coming in late and coming into say goodnight to us all !!)having fallen asleep for no apparent reason (although we put it down to drinking too much)with a massive headache and feeling sick as a dog was very puzzling .. finally my mate suggested we have the fire checked checked and yes we were being poisoned there was a tiny crack in the pipe !!! now everything gas is serviced and checked every 12 months ... | |
