Posted: 11/4/2006 7:14:05 PM | Actually, there are a lot of reasons but, I just finished watching the leaf game while perusing the forums here. Usually I change the channel but tonight I was distracted and ended up listing to his post-game rant.
I live in Toronto and actually agree with the rest of Canada about the favoritism the CBC show towards Leaf hockey but now Cherry doesn’t even talk about the games; he went on about traffic and driving to Buffalo, complained about not winning awards and as usual took credit for players successes (even though none of them listen to him and haven’t been on his show or mentioned him for years).
The Leafs broke buffalo streak for not losing in regulation time and Captain Sundin got two goals but the only credit he could give was to Raycroft who wasn’t really challenged and to Belak, who had a meaningless fight with the only goon on buffalo in the first period, saying that fight was a turning point in the game which it clearly wasn’t.
He refuses to give Sundin (or any European) credit or even pronounces their names properly. The last time I had the misfortune of being at a friends house who wanted to watch the idiot was the night against Calgary when Sundin got his 500th goal, a short-handed over-time game winner and a hat trick. What did Cherry talk about? The old days and Bobby Orr as usual!
There are a lot of other reason’s why I’m just sick of Cherry but I think it would be redundant to list them here.

He 1st got his job as a TV anaylist when no pro hockey team would give him a coaching job.
He's over-stayed his welcome on CBC be a couple of decades.
Most informed people, with any common sense or knowledge of hockey, don't take him seriously.
But what's troubling is, the number of uninformed viewers, who don't recognise that Cherry and his opinions are a joke, and believe everything which he says is gospel, because it's on TV. | |

I thought I remember hearing something about CBC not wanting to pay him, or he said something stupid to the press...I don't know can't remember. That gay obsession that he used to have for "DOUGIE", drove me nuts. Totally annoying to listen to.
I think it was about that time that I'd quit watching his segment of Hockey Night in Canada, and started switching the channel between periods. | |

I think its time CBC released him, I think his time should have ended as soon as the lockout ended, cause even now you still dont hear the end of it with that man. He gets on my nerves sometimes, and poor Ron never gets a word in when Cherry keeps blabbing on and on like a old broken vinyl record player.  | |

Cherry does chastize some of his "favourites" if they cheap shot someone. Cherry is fine, he is entertaining, he is brash and he is unapologetic. He is still great on HNIC. If you want to talk about getting rid of CBC employees, get rid of Harry Neale. He is useless, provides no insight into the game and cannot forma a coherent sentence. Bob Cole is a legend, but it is now time for Jim Hughson to be the main man on HNIC for the Stanley Cup Drive. | |

Like Tie Domi snapped on someone one day and 'oh no, it wasn't Domi's fault', said Mr.Cherry, 'somebody game him a clean hit and it angered poor Tie Domi, so he had no choice but to go balistic on another player' (I think it was a New Jersey Devil...Neidermeyer?) Ever since then, I was like, screw you grapes, only your precious Leafs are never at fault? whatever...

Sure some people may get a good laugh, while others are free to change the channel, yet others even take him seriously.
Myself, having grown up around hockey, would prefer to see a sane, knowledgeable person do the intermission commentary. Rather than listen to Cherry's loudmouth rants, offensive remarks about people's ethnic backgrounds etc.
I'd rather listen to a commentator such as Kelly Hrudey make valid points about the game, and express sane opinions. Rather than listen to Cherry state something absurd and pointless like: "that team will lose because their Russian player wears an eye-visor". | |

i agree with the "if you dont like it, change the channel". hell, its only intermission, who cares?
i cant believe people are saying he doesnt belong in hockey. he's a drunk spazz. he's perfect for hockey lol.
and im sure mats sundin was extremely offended by being compared to bobby orr | |

the folks on here complaining about the love of the leafs in toronto should really just accept that
we love the leafs
we live in toronto
and we do not really have the time to spend worrying about minnesota or anaheim or even calgary or edmonton
the leafs entertain me because i live in toronto. i like watching hockey but would rather trip on down to st clair and bathurst and watch st mikes play than montreal or buffalo.
spend some time in another city and see how much time and devotion their local teams get
ever listen to yankee broadcasts?
or the red sox?
i was in new york and boston this summer- the blue jays were in town in new york while i was there and you would never have known it-sure-they chatted about wells-wondering how he would look in pinstripes but
my goodness it was surreal their devotion to their teams
and do you think they love the habs in montreal-do you think their french language broadcasts give the leafs any air time? or vancouver?

he speaks the truth far more than he is misinformed...about what exactly is he wrong about?
granted-his takes on europeans are ridiculous...but he does praise sundin and the others-witness his takes on ovechkin...what else?
and for the guy who says he changes the channel when he is on...i think you are in the minority-television is supposed to entertain us-and cherry does that-would you rather hrudey?
