Winter is here folks......It may have melted off today but the big bad drifty stuff is on its way.....Are you ready for it? Did you get caught without winter tires today? I am lucky in that respect....truck has All Terrain tires that are really good in snow...but I followed some cars to work today that were slippin and slidin.....

I didn't think I needed to get snow tires...I have all season and a 4 wheel drive. That did not help me this morning on my way to work. I was going down a hill, and couldn't make the turn. I kept going straight. I did manage to avoid the deep ditch that I was headed for....but it was a scary moment! I was going slow, or else I would of been introduced to some trees:) I am reconsidering the 'all season' tires.

Nope, but thanks for reminding us... I'll call the garage first thing in the am. It's a bit sad, it feels like only yesterday I was having them changed for my summer tires...

My coworker had her winter tires put on last week and we still enjoyed a bit of slipping and sliding this morning. I had a good view of a sloped turn from my office window this morning and watched more than one vehicle either slow down to a near-stop to make it or miss the turn altogether. What a zany first taste of winter.

Yeah I am not sold on all season tires. Years ago I had small front wheel drive cars ( toyota tercels and Honda Civic and an Accord) and I distinctly remember the first winter I had one and figured I could make it on all seasons.....First snow storm we had in SJ I high centered the Accord on the median right in front of what is now Acadian Bus Terminal...It was a gym back then I think....or a bar or something. Anyway I went to Personal Auto and bought four winter tires and that ( an subsiquent Fwd's) always had four good winter tires....and the things were like little tanks. Now ofcourse I am a diehard 4x4 guy and the "bigger the lug the further ya go" motto. Gutta love big ass tires....lol

I used to call my 89' Ford Escort the "Snow tank".

Accords and Integras decked out with full blown Michelin X Alpins or other good winter tires are damn worthy snow tanks too!

When I get snow tires, is it better to get bigger ones? How can you tell a good winter tire from a not so good winter tire?

I can't believe we live in a place that every year, about this time, it snows and people act like they haven't seen it before. The first snowfall of the year and the accidents started right around 7:30 yesterday morning. It's the same every year...

My winter tires were on 2 weeks ago.

Getting 4 new ones on this week
don't trust all season tires
as was evident with all accidents yesterday
people don't seem to realise
have to slow down when roads are icey or snow on

I don't have a car, but when I was married; we had a car. We lived in Bathurst (there was definitely more snow there) and the all season tires worked well. I made sure that the ex had his car winterized every fall (which also meant to have his tires checked to make sure they were in good condition). The first snowfall doesn't prove anything. People are just getting used to slowing down and taking a different view on their driving. No matter where you live, the first snowfall is always tricky. Well, that's my 2-cents worth. lol

In response to Wildlys question about snow tires.......Things have changed with technology from the days when all you wanted was big wide deep set lugs.

Tires are set up in patterns and these patterns are repeated around the tire. Each "block" of tread pattern is called a lug and todays snow tires bear little resemblance to the snow tires of just ten years ago. Todays tires are of softer compounds (kinds of rubber)....yes they do wear differently but they also stick to snow and ice better. I am a diehard Canadian Tire tire guy. The tires are good and the $7 road hazard warranty is worth its weight in gold as far as I am concerned. Look for their Alpine name...I think that is the name....its a copy of the Michlin Blizzak I think....Not too sure....They don't make them in 31 inch so I am not exactly well versed in the subject.

Just remember that having tires rotated is key to getting all you can get out of them and Crappy Tire rotates them for free every 10,000km....I have mine rotated every 5000km when I have the oil changed.

There is a big push these days for mounting winter tires on seperate rims....This is an excellent investment because todays tires are not designed to be "broken down"(taken off the rim) anymore than three times.....Some manufacturers will void the tire warranty if you break it down more than twice and are silly enough to tell them you have...lol.

And as to size.....width is a consideration with snow tires as wider is not always better in snow and ice.....Normally the narrowest tire that fits your rim is the better idea....Rally drivers use the skinniest tires you can imagine to race on snow and ice.....

Studs are still a personal taste thing....I have read articles about how a tire at 60mph will actually round out due to centrifical force and literally "stand up and skate" on studs. In other words studs are awesome at low speed...and a hazard at high speed. Many states have banned their use dur to accidents and road damage....But that is up to you.

Another tidbit of info on snow tires....you only want to put them on when the ground starts to get cold. They are made of a softer rubber & will wear quick on warm pavement.

Edit: I usually put mine on around now & I think it's around the end of March when I take them off.

I did get my names screwed up ....Nordic is Crappy Tire.....Blizzak is BFG and X-Ice is Michelin. these are all new technology tires...the lugs on these look like they have been sliced with a razor and this gives the rubber the oppurtunity create thousands of small edges....therefore gripping the snow or ice. These cuts are called "sypes"(definitely the incorrect spelling there too)....

Excellent point about the warm weather/pavement.....

Wow....Fauz is right...that is the best break down on tires I have ever read. I am mechanically dylexsic....so although I read it...I don't completely understand it Not that I am admitting to being unintelligent...I unfortunately start out frustrated when it comes to repairs and or maintenance of any sort on my vehicle. I think its a girl thing Thanks Izzcam....the part I do understand I will take with me to the tire store.

seriously look at Crappy tire......there is a big sale now and they are giving awesome prices on wheel tire combos.....and BUY THE ROAD HAZARD .....if anything happens to the tire they don't fix it...they replace it. On a 4 wheel drive that you have done the rotations....They replace all four tires.....and I can prove it....they have done it for me....more than once.
