Perhaps the coolest band to have emerged in the last dozen years or so and been completely ignored by radio.

Stereolab - anyone heard of or like them?

In a geekish sense, yes, they are pretty cool. I think the Moog synthesizers kind of scare radio off though. I love Stereolab, and try to get friends into "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" as much as possible.

What are they doing now though? Are they still together? I hade heard that one or two of the members of Stereolab passed away.

Yes, Stereolab is truly great! The first time I heard them was when the tune "Parsec" was used for the Volkswagen Beetle commercials, which I thought was a really cool song, but I didn't know it was them. "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" was the first Stereolab album I got and I was hooked. "Dots & Loops" and "Sound-Dust" are also favorites. I really dig the Moog synth, Farfisa organ, and the strange androgynous vocals (usually in French).

Cheers,
Chris

absolutely fantastic artists, been around for years and I like almost every album they've put out. I love the fact that they are doing well, but not in a mainstream pop sort of way, and will probably be around for a while longer.

They're still recording, I think their last full album was Margarine Eclipse. I haven't paid as much attention to their stuff after Dots and Loops.

The member that died was Mary Hanson. I think the band went into haitus for a bit after this.

"John Cage Bubblegum" was the song that got me interested, I thought it sounded initially like the Go-gos on acid. Other than Parsec I think the only song that may be recognizable by the mainstream is Perversion as it was on the soundtrack of that John Cusack film High Fidelity.

Emporer Tomato Ketchup is irresistable but definetely an acquired taste.

A bit of trivia, w/r to 'Gus the Mynah Bird' which is on their Sound Dust CD.

The Mynah Birds were a mid-sixties band based in Toronto which Neil Young and Rick James (the Superfreak) formed early in their careers. They even recorded a couple of singles for Motown.

I really like them once in a while, but not as a steady diet!
