| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 2:42:34 AM | | While reading the threads posted on POF I've noticed that many people seem to dislike if not outright hate Police Officers. My question is "why"? Police Officers can be****,conceited, obnoxious, over bearing, nasty and mean... just like people in any other profession, but can you really imagine our world without someone to protect it from those who don't or won't respect the rights of others? I can't I'm proud to be a Police Officer and I think I'm a damned good one,I believe that in all things I should treat others as I would want to be treated (I think that's called "The Golden Rule") and I try to teach this to younger Officers when I train them. How do you feel about Law Enforcement Officers as a whole? | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 3:25:09 AM | Cops are there to protect us. No doubt there are some bad seeds, but there are bad seeds in all occupations. Oh no the cop complained about your clothes, better go haten old cops because of that. Just wait until one day when some old cop saves your azz. Maybe you will rethink your hate then. Stupid to hate a group for the actions of one!!!!! Like I said most(NOT ALL) who hate cops are the morons breaking the laws.
Edit for the post below mine: Telling me to dress up? Wasnt that what the cop was telling you? lmfao Hate most old cops because ONE yelled at you? lmfao simple minds

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 4:45:21 AM | | Good reply Brooke, it's good to hear that young people actually realize that all cops aren't their enemies. I agree with other posters that there are bad seeds and that some attitudes are just WRONG, no excuses make a wrong right. Cops walk a very fine line and the abuse of power happens. My first day in the academy we were told that only two things would get us in trouble in law enforcement and that was "everything we said and everything we did". I've found in 18 years as a cop that evrey call is different and if I'm the hero on one, I'll be the villan on another. You can't please all the people all the time, sooner or later you're going to step on someone's toes and they're not going to be happy. I believe in being firm but fair and treating everyone equally, I haven't always been successful, but I keep trying. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 4:55:41 AM | I think that for the most part I like cops. I've had a few friends and acquaintences that are now cops, military and public, and they were good guys. They developed quite a line of b.s. when it comes to a certain air of moral superiority they have toward, ahem, "average" person, but then, what subculture or walk of life doesn't cultivate it's own form of snobbery?
In my own personal experience, cops have always dealt fairly with me and given me the benefit of the doubt... even when I was, technically if not morally, in the wrong about something that needed doin'.
I think that the bigger problem isn't necessarily the "cop mentality", but rather the inadequette system they uphold and support and represent. And they know how inadequette it is better than anyone.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 5:10:42 AM | The truth of the matter is, it appears there is a mentality that if you are not one of them, you are a criminal. Now a question right back to you Ben. Why don't cops like internal affairs cops or whatever the term for cops who investigate cops? A cop gets pulled over for impaired driving isn't charged etc. Seems there is a double standard or is it selective enforcement? When there is a bad cop and the rest of you allow him to continue, it does in fact make you all bad. Keep in mind that we, the public give you great power- we pay your wages- we have every right to put the police and their actions under the microscope. The police OWE us respect. You EARN our respect. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 5:24:42 AM | I once went out with my friends, around 4am when we went look for taxi, i saw a police car outside we all were seriously giggly (all those tequilas) just for the fun of it, i went knocked on the front window where the policeman sat, he gave me that look of power, anyway (i shuldve stoped but.... i was drunk and happy, damn it!)
he opened the window and said "yes? can i help you!?" with his "power" voice, and gosh he was ugly! I gave him my address with please, and asked him to open the back door, with please (yes, i know my manners!)
so my friends and i could get in....
he opened his door and handcuffed me!! the bloody ugly grumpy **stard!! after that i hate every bloody policemen

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 5:47:54 AM | I will agree with you on some points, but not all. Because of the pressures of the job and the hate we get from so many people we do sometimes get an "us and them" mentality, and if you'll notice cops mainly associate with other cops (this is because we often feel that "civilians" just don't understand, those in the military also feel this way).Remember, we usually see people at their worst and this can and will color anyone's perceptions and influence their actions. Most cops are good people that have made a career choice to help others and try to make a difference in the world,we sure don't do it to get rich, there aren't manyrich cops that aren't crooked. The reason that most cops dislike IAD cops is that if/when they are accused of wrong-doing, they are considered GUILTY until proven innocent and there is always a faint doubt even if there is no proof in a situation. When you're investigated you're never totally cleared, there's just not enough proof to convict you. I agree that bad cops should be fired, just like bad truck drivers, doctors, mechanics or (insert profession). The days of cops getting away with breaking the law is largely a thing of the past, administrations now listen better to citizen complaints and do investigate and people are no longer afraid of retaliation from the police so they do complain. Police Officers don't like having bad cops in their ranks either and the "old boy" networks of the past are disappearing. We know that one bad apple doesn't spoil the whole barrel, but the taint of corruption clings to us all so we DO police our own. Should we be placed under a microscope... just remember, under a microscope even the most perfect diamond has a flaw, could you and your profession stand up under that kind of scrutiny? Probably not. Yes, we are granted power, but after a short time on the job most cops realize just how little power/authority we really have. Respect goes both ways, yes you pay our salary, but you can't buy our respect. I say if you don't respect the man, respect the position. Men must EARN each other's respect. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 5:59:22 AM | Wow nona32, you were drunk in public also known as Public Intoxication for statutory purposes, you called attention to yourself by banging on the car window and removing any doubt that you were drunk by asking the officer to effectively act as your taxi and take your drunk butt home and you're complaining because he didn't think it was funny and doing his job by placing you under arrest and taking you not home but to jail?????? Isn't that kinda like putting your hand into the fire and then complaining about getting burned? I bet you learned a valuable lesson whether you hate cops now or not!! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 6:42:56 AM | Now now Sir ;o) he did not take me to jail, he handcuffed me and took me and my friends to the station and talked, they let us go after they realised we done nothing wrong. And I did not banged on the window, i knocked.
cant you see it on the funny side of it, sir? I mean this policeman could just told me to go find a taxi? sure i was drunk in town (where all the pubs and clubs are) i wasnt being nasty to him It was a place where everybody can go and get drunk without worrying about waking up the neighbours and that or in my case without worrying getting handcuffed by a grumpy policeman, who could no see the funny side of things
yeah i learned my lesson,Sir. never to opproach a grumpy policeman specially when drunk ;o)

coppers are card holding members of the largest gang on the planet.
i dated a woman that worked with the police, fire dept and ambulance or ems and all
the groups involved in public service.
it's the get out of jail free crowd.
she could pick up the phone make a call and find out anything she wanted from the
police or the fire dept.
she was in the gang.
it's al capone's gangster tactics with badges!

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 7:45:18 AM | You sir have obviously been denied entry into our very exclusive little club and it sounds a lot like "sour grapes". Did you lose your girl to a cop or what? I don't know the Canadian laws, but in the USA that's not how it works. The next time you have a problem that you would normally call the "power abusing members of the largest gang on the planet" for, please feel free to just not call, instead try calling your nearest drug dealer and let him respond to the situation. | |

no sour grapes!
thanks for confirming that it is an exclusive club.
no i lost that girl to a fire chief that seduced her. then they both ran off and stole
all the furnishings from our condo and used there police contacts to avoid prosecution.
they were living in the above the law bubble.
but no sour grapes i was finished with her.
your exclusive club is the club you chose to join so enjoy your choice and the
limitations and barriers you've, choosen to live behind.
as for calling the police no thanks!
the police have lost society's trust.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 10:04:57 AM | All my life I've treated people with respect and dignity, more often then not I get treated in kind.
I've only once seen a cop with a bad attitude, and that was over paper-work.
I've lived in a few different cities in Canada and have never been "power-tripped" on, even when I used to be a pot smoker, and got caught a few times as a teen -
"Okay put that joint out, do you have any more pot? might as well tell me I'll find it anyway, ....okay now dump it out and don't do this in public, jeeezz...."
When I was a kid, I even remember getting rides home, not because I was doing something wrong, ...but because the weather was rough, and I was walking in it....
Maybe it's because I don't put out a bad vibe, ...I don't know, or maybe it's just that most Canadian cops are cool, ...all I know is:
I wouldn't want the job, and I'm damned glad somebody does it.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 10:07:12 AM | When I was a auxiliary cop for a yr or so, the cop I rode with told me if I get pulled over for speeding by a state trooper to show him my badge tell him who I am and there is a good chance I wouldn't get a ticket.
I don't like the double standard. I see them breaking all kinds of traffic laws that they give us tickets for.
I was thinking about becoming a state trooper myself but after being around some of them and seeing their holier then thou attitude, I changed my mind.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 10:16:35 AM | I think what bothers me the most about this one, is that people 'hate cops' until they need one. Then suddenly they are their best friend. It amazes me just the kinds of things the police have to deal with. I know, I've seen people go off on them with no reasoning or justifying it. Pretty pathetic stuff if you ask me. At the end of the day, police are just like anyone else. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 12:16:48 PM | Maybe those that hate cops feel they can "reason with" the crack head that has just broken into their home and threatened them and their family....you know, maybe he is just a poor oppressed person, his mom didnt hug him enough and with just a little caring and reasoning he wont really blow you and your family away in order to get his next fix
We live in a society of laws....someone has to enforce those laws. I appreciate the very difficult job that police officers do keeping us safe.
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 12:23:19 PM | The level at which you "hate" cops is relative to the amount of illegal activity you are engaged in.
If you aren't breaking the law then you have no problem with cops (good cops anyway).
i.e. in Highschool I hated cops because I was partying all the time and underage drinking. So the cops were the enemy. Many of us speed so we hate cops because if they catch us they will fine us (we hate that). Drug dealers hate cops, enough said there.
People mostly resent cops because they are societies disciplinarians. Just like you didn't like the principle of your school or any other disciplinary figure.
We need cops to control crime. Thats why we pay thier salary. You woudn't want to live in a lawless society.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 11/13/2006 1:35:00 PM | i never had a problem with police until i moved to this town.
i see them harass old people, issue parking tickets illegally and generally go ballistic about stupid victimless infractions. all this, while ignoring the crackhouses, underage drinking and drug trafficking that goes on under their noses. they're terrified of the 20-something rednecks that run this town. no one from outside the area ever gets hired by this police department. they won't hire blacks or women either. they've spent a fortune on a new coffee lounge for the cop shop, while blocks away, playgrounds fall into disrepair.
hate cops? not in general...just in this town.
