It depends on what type of things you are looking for while on your trip. But there is an amazing book called Road Trips US: Wierd and Wild and it actually includes really good maps and leads you to crazy things like the Largest Statue of A Cow, Corn Palace, The Beer Can House. If you want just a beautiful scenery road, I25 will lead a long way east/west (Colorado, New Mexico, Neveda, Etc) 287 will lead North South in the same part of the country.

There is a million routes depends on your transportation, what you want to see, and time.

It would have been nice to get the books ISBN, writer's name, publisher's name, the year of publish etc. This is an easy way to find a book.

Good luck with your trip, don't forget to tell us when you get back.

after a recent solo vacation down to Cancun I was talking to a lot of people from New Orleans. THere is still really a lot of damage from the hurricane and in places that have been affected, the mentality is not very welcoming to tourists, particularly in Mexico.

I was quite suprised to learn that New orleans only got a grocery store built a month ago.

Pacific Coast Highway. Route # 1. Can't beat the scenery...from Washington to California...or just drive parts of it...windy road but right along the ocean. You can branch off to a million places along the way. Don't miss the giant Sequoias and Redwood forest near San Fran...Pismo Beach in central coast California. Oregon Coast...just too much to mention. Try it!

I'd leave the interstate system alone as much as possible and enjoy the old US highway system. Forget about the worlds biggest ball of twine and just enjoy the many, many delightful surprises along the way. Immerse yourself in the journey and let the destination unfold naturally. Hey, that's really not a bad way to view life in general. Above all,,,stay safe. Let us know what you find out there.

During the summer months, try the Great River Road. Follows the Mississippi valley and many old river towns from Minnesota to Louisianna.

Hi! I'd like to suggest a little research on route 66 before you decide on that one, there are many parts (miles) of route 66 that are no longer there.. example, hwy 40 (I40) has replaced some of route 66 ... there are historical markers if you park and walk in along I40 between kingman and Flagstaff Arizona. Route 66 is now horse and jogging trails in that area.

Route 1, The Pacific Coast Highway is also known as the " 101 " in your map book.

I've traveled from coast to coast and border to border many times with the use of a map book.. Some people are armed with a cell phone, yahoo and call in for directions (Takes 20 minutes) to where ever... There are also some really nice GPS units out there with everything one could possibly want ( so they think ) programmed in it.. "does not inlcude new construction"

IMO, A map atlas of the US, (Canada and Mexico if you plan to go there) is all one really needs to begin travel... If all else fails, What I have done once I get to my destination is purchased a detailed street map of the area for completion. One can find these at almost any gas station or the city hall. Microsoft has something to offer in this regard too... personally I like the maps along with a laptop if the I have time for a laptop...

If it were me, I would sit down and take a good hard look at all the major road systems along with the shorts cuts and side roads for site seeing before I started. I would then create a flexible plan ( things change ) according to interests... inculding place's, people, hotels, motels, cabins, food, fuel, banks, break downs etc.

From coast to coast, Some of these are I10, I40, I70, I80 and I90, From border to border starting from the west coast some are hwy 101, I5, I15, I25 etc .. don't forget about toll roads (turn pikes) they can get a little spendy... there are ways around these but it's slower...

For a Map Atlas there are place's like Barns n Nobles ... A good sized Truck stop has a few that range from USD $30.00 to USD $60.00 There's phone numbers in these map atlas's for each state on road conditons and construction...

In my travels, I've believed that all the states have something good to offer...

it just depends on what one wants to do or see...
