Federer best of all time?
Posted: 11/22/2006 12:02:59 AM
He is kicking some major ass. When he is on form (which is pretty much all the time right now) he makes everythng look easy. As someone who plays a lot of tennis I know how difficult some of the shots he makes are and I'm amazed at how easy he makes it look. Blow out matches with Federer are still worth watching just to see what shots he is going to pull out of his hat to win a point.
I hope people appreciate what he is doing. So much is made about Tiger Woods etc. Federer is doing the same thing in tennis!

he really is very special.....more than that....and yes he is great, somwtimes when people are so good people dislike them....i think he is getting some slack from the public.
at the moment my fav are Nadal, he is really my type of player.....these two are going to be here for a long time.....and i think dominate the grandslams for a long time too!!!

Personally I believe in his time Sampras would've minced Federer like so much meat, seriously it'd be short sets. Pete still stands as the best all time.

what about the ice man swede, bjorn borg , he would have given sampras a run for his money, and he would have destroyed federer, the one to watch at the moment is rafa nadal, superb on clay and getting better all the time on lawn

tum tee tum tee tum just padding out till its long enough so they let me post

federer sampras match would be very fun to watch.......would be close...always hard to try to compare players like that......nadal may not last too long.......his style of play is so hard on his body...you could tell for the last few months of the season he was pooped and losing to people he shouldn't lose to...so much of tennis is so mental that any of the top players from any era would be able to compete if they had all the same physical skills......athletes are so tough and fit these days and bigger/stronger.......

we need more characters but ones that still have style and grace.........connors and mccenroe had style but no grace!

nadal needs to stop wearing those damn pant/shorts only because he needs to grab them out of his ass before every point.........

roddick needs to stop rearranging himself before every point too or get better underwear! :)

yeah.....i think sampras federer would be good but tennis is evolving, its hard to weigh up.......but you maybe could argue that sampras lost to the better man....thats why hes here.....but i don't argue how good sampras was.
i really see federer and nadal dominating for at least 5 years minimum!!!!!

i think next year roddick will have some better tournaments..he seems to be more into it and connors will be good influence at least for a bit then roddick will get rid of him after he annoys him too much.........nadal has to work too hard..i just don't see him being around for long time.......his body takes so much abuse

Most of the other people who could lay claim to the title have already said they think Federer is the best ever. And that includes many of the names mentioned by others. Got to go with the opinion of those that know the game better than I do.

Revival of an old threat. I've watch tennis since the open era, Roger Federer is unquestionable the best of all time. He changed his serve-volley game to an all court game will still playing in tennis top 30. Changing at that point is his career seems impossible. Agassi played Samprass, Connors, McEnroe, etc, he said that Roger Federer was the only one that he new was better than him. He didn't know how to beat him. This year if Nadal doesn't beat Federer at any other open than the French, I think we will have to wait for another guy that has any chance of knocking Federer out.

Definitely Federer is the best player of all time. I had watched different players but Federer stands out like a Lion, The king of jungle. The greatness of Roger is atttributed due to the following 3 factors
1. Technicalities of the game -- Federer has the complete game . Powerful & Reliable serve, excellent forehand, backhand, topspin, solid baseline game, excellent volley, drop shots and excellent Control of all the shots. So, he has complete allround game. That way , he is heads above sampras, agassis,Connors,McEnroe .. Sampras doesnt have solid baseline game and agassi doesnt have solid volley game.. ( most of the guys are either baseliners or volleyers)

( the only little weak link in his game is becos of his single fist back hand , which lacks power , which is exposed by opponent, who don't have power in his shots that are coming to roger's backhand side. Thatshow , Nadal able to win over roger ,especially in clay courts. Nadal uses typical topspin game and doesnt use much power unlike lots of other players. So, nadal will always turns out to be tough opponent for federer on any court especially on the back hand side. So nadal will always be a thorn in the body for roger ) .

The only other player who has complete allround game is Marat Safin. Tehnically and theoritically , safin doesn't have any weak link in his game w.r.t tehnicalities but his problem is 3rd point.

2.FITNESS-- Tennis is rigourous game and roger is extremely fit . 21 consecutive grand slam semi finals shows up his fitness and consistency . Lots of other players are also extremely fit .

3. GAME PLAN -- This is special strength of roger and in this category he is heads above than the rest and this is point which makes him the greatest of all Time. Lots of other players might be scoring well in first and second points but not in the third ( Very nice example is Marat Safin )
a) attitude , mind set , adaptability to the situation of game , analysing the game in midway and able to change his game dynamically ,ability to raise the level of his game when situation demands it, cool presence of mind and controlled temperament ( which is most imp), able to change gears to be in aggressive, attacking or holding back and relying on the basics ( ex when opponent is serving at 30-40, roger typically attacks at that time . if he wins he gains lead , if he looses that point , it will become 40-40 deuce , so nothing to loose ) , Ability to adjust the game according the nature and level of the opponent ( if he faces tough opponent , he relies on basics more , try to hold serve and look for tiny opportunity to get lead when the opponent is serving , so worst case both will reach tie break , then in the tie break attack a bit more , just one lead is enough to win the set ) , So that he doesnt give much opportunities to others , but he will try to take every tiny opportunity the opponent gives.

So, roger will be the toughest opponent to face . Lots of other players will score high in 1 and 2 points, but 3 point is the one which makes roger the greatest of all time.

Definitely Federer will loose games , after all he is human inspite of all the 3 strong points. But he will fight , he never gives game away, and even if we he looses the game , we dont see that he looses like 0-6,0-6,0-6 ( unless the opponent is extra ordinary) . So even if roger looses the match , he fights for hours before going down which is nature of champion fighter and champion player.

Federer is an amazing player and superb all-round athlete. He may well be the best ever player, although there IS an argument that he hasn't had to compete with as many greats as, say, Borg or Sampras did in their day.

Only Nadal (and recently Murray) has emerged as a serious rival in recent years (while Borg had Connors and McEnroe and Sampras had to contend with greats like Becker, Agassi, Edberg, Lendl, etc. etc), so without the playing field the game had in the 70's and 80's, it's difficult to tell just how good Roger is.

I disagree. The other players became "greats" because no one dominated like Federer and were able to spread the grand slam wins among several players thus building their legendary status. Roger hasn't allowed others to have a crack at the slams - Rafa & Novak excepted because he is so dominant.

Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all-time.

Define tennis talent? Most players are judged by how many majors they win but Roger wins most of them so the others cannot become "greats" or "legendary."

It's not Federer's fault he has a special gift. Even before he had won any slams back when he was a teenager, the talking heads were describing how he is "the most gifted player I've ever seen" and how he has "no weaknesses; can do it all."

He wins because he's great & not because of the competition. Who ended Sampras' reign at Wimbledon? Sampras quit in part because he knew in his heart he was 'done.' He was young enough he still could've played but he knew his glory days were gone.

I don't think it's a matter of the talent being down. It's just a matter of Federer's talent being on such a high level and consistent for so long. As another poster mentioned before, he's great in every aspect of the game. He doesn't necessarily have to play a certain way to play "his game"; whereas Conners was a baseline player, McEnroe serve and volley, etc. You can't really exploit anything in Federer's game because he can pretty much play any way.

Yeah, I wouldn't argue against Federer being the best.

The only micro-crack I see in Roger's game has to do with his one-handed backhand. It is the reason he has a losing record against Nadal. Nadal as a lefty always hits his forehand with that crazy topspin to Fed's backhand as one of his core strategies & as a one hander it's tougher to handle.

Tests have been done on Nadal's topspin forehand & he hits it with twice the RPM of any other player in history.

They've used sophisticated imaging equipment; measuring equipment to measure the RPM on the forehands of players.

A typical player with a good topspin forehand the ball might rotate at 2500 RPM.

Rafa Nadal's forehand rotates at just over 5,000RPM!

Players like John McEnroe are on record as stating that no player in history has hit a topspin forehand with as much spin as Rafa.

The shot is so tough for Federer to handle because the ball kicks so high off the court making it difficult for a player with a one-handed backhand to generate pace. Next time Fed & Nadal play - watch how often Nadal hits his forehand to Federer's backhand!

The modern racquet technology doesn't hurt either.

Difficult to compare different eras

Laver won the grand slam twice, wanst allowed to compete for 8 years in majors as they were for amateurs until 1968. To me Laver is the best ever.

Federer is a fanastic player but only Nadal, Murray and Djokovic are his major competitors. Sampras had Agassi, Becker, Courier, Bruguera, all multi slam winners to deal with.

Bjorg won what 6 straight Wimbledons and 5 Roland Garros in a row. In the 70's noone competed in Australia or he may have had 4/5 more grand slams.

It is all very subjective to me the top 5 are 1. Laver 2. Sampras. 3. Federer 4. Bjorg
5. Budge

I believe he certainally is the best player of the Open Era and it's becoming more diffcult to dispute him being the best of all time. Especially becasue his career is not over yet. I also believe he will win at least another 7 Grand Slam titles before he retires.

Excellent observation. Perhaps Federer should start developing a two-handed backhand to add to his arsenal just for that.

That should fix the micro-crack

Tennis is not a sport

WTF?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??

Granted I haven't picked up a racquet since I was a teenager but I remember that after running around all over the court all day it sure as hell felt like as much of a sport as football, basketball or wrestling..........
