| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 11/22/2006 12:23:36 AM | Just a note, This event will now be a monthly deal starting in January, There might be a *possible* small one in december but it wont be posted on the event and i will post it in this thread.
I weighted the pros and cons of using the old thread but this one has the right tittle for folks that may need to look it up via the search engine. So any news will be posted here and the signup page will remain in the event section.
For those of you not reading the event section, the event was quite well received and enjoyed, so i will plan it monthly.
No i didnt forget about the Sultan's tent, when they find a new location we will go there and rock the casbah!
Again, thanks for the folks who made it, It was a very memorable event and i am already looking with much anticipation for the next one!
Your not so newbie host, Julie...i mean Sen...

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/7/2007 5:47:52 PM | Just bringing this forth so we can discuss this monthly event and clarify what is happening as I heard there was some misunderstanding thread about it recently and I was at work when it happened so I'm not sure what went down.
Sen (the original host) has decided to bow out of hosting this event for personal reasons and he and I talked about where to go from here. After a discussion we decided to go ahead with the next dinner and I will organize it. Lola Honey is co-hosting with me.
At this next dinner, the floor will be open for other volunteers to host for April. We will be looking for hosts at each dinner for the next month, so as to give others a chance to host if they so wish.
The dinners are usually held on Tuesdays so as not to interfere with other events. But that's negotiable.
So now - we need an idea for the March dinner and we need it quick so we can get the ball rolling.
The tentative date is March 27th.
Ideas please!!!! | |

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/7/2007 5:50:48 PM | Great idea 110%.
Actually, I was hoping to do that in the summer anyways - bbq/potluck backyard thing and people can bring ethnic dishes.
Any other suggestions - for March?

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/7/2007 6:17:39 PM | I missed the very first one, so not sure what ethnicity was visited!
Indian, there is: Nirvana; Prime Tandoori House; Mango Shiva
Tropika Malaysian Cuisine Edelweiss (European) Blue House Cafe (Latin American)
I like Indian. I also like most Asian foods.
Apparently I am not really narrowing this down for you, but there are suggestions, maybe get the ball rolling.

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/7/2007 6:21:08 PM | so far we've done:
Indian Food Nepalese Food Greek Food
Hope that helps!
I don't know the restaurants in this town too well so could use some venue suggestions along with the ethnicity suggestions.
Thanks all. | |

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/7/2007 6:40:24 PM | | I've been to the Blue House Cafe... really good food but it can be a bit pricey. They also have live entertainment, a flamenco guitarist and, I've heard flamenco dancers, but only on Thursdays to Sunday. | |

Keep the ideas coming though.
Thanks for the input. If anything, we'll have ideas for the next six months.

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/7/2007 9:23:20 PM | The other one I thought of is the Rajdoot on 4th Street in Mission. East Indian. I've been there a couple times, and it is really good.
And, if it is good for Anthony Hopkins, it should be good enough for us.
The other place I have heard nothing but great about is The Clay Pot on 32nd Avenue NE (???). (again, East Indian).

Broken Plate, Pegasus (Greek) check that baby off
NO YOU DON'T! Pegasus is NOTHING like that Broken Plate - We still need to go there! MMMMM. Wednesdays they used to have the Rembitika Hipsters play. They play every year @ the folk festival in town - and they are great! Last time I was there on a Fri or Sat, there was a belly dancer - and she was fabulous entertainment.
El Sombrero is in a class of it's own - AWESOME. Salt & Pepper - I hear tell that the one in Bowness is the best of the three.
Misai has sadly gone down my list of favourite Sushi places, but it is still good, and they have Tatami rooms for groups. Do we want all you can eat? It might be daunting to stuff enough food down the gullet to make it worthwhile. Our last group outing (4 guys + Me) was $165. We were celebrating - kanpai!
Blue House - I've heard you need a rezzie, great food, not a lot of room, pricey - but good. And they encourage you to get out when you're done. Very popular.
Vietnamese… dang. All my favourite places have been going downhill as of late. <sigh>
Fooooood.

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/8/2007 8:47:53 PM | | Mmmm Pegasus...I had the full meal deal when I went there and got to try a good assortment of food - it was delicious! But I did enjoy the Broken Plate as well....ah hell I like it all! | |

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/8/2007 11:23:39 PM | Hmmm...for Greek food I prefer Santorini over Pegasus. Been to many Greek restaurants in Calgary...but my favorite one closed down - Athens by Night. The food there was amazing. Anyways, Santorini has a more cozier feel and I feel like I am back in Greece and their food is fantastic. I would love to go out for African, Moroccan, or Portuguese. And as long as it's on a Tuesday...I can come... | |

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/9/2007 11:27:07 AM | With the Indian and African suggestions, this may be a place to try, the buffet is usually very good...
Samosa Grill Rates: Dishes: $7.95 - $23.95 — Samosa Grill serves up a unique mix of East Indian and East African cuisines. Crispy samosas and Tandoori chicken are just some of the menu items offered. An outdoor second floor patio is also available. Hours of Operation are: Lunch: Buffets & a la carte Mon. – Fri. 11:30 am – 2:30 pm Sat. & Sun. 11:30 am – 4:00 pm Dinners: a la carte Sun. – Thur. 5:00 pm – 9:30 pm Fri. – Sat. 5:00 pm – 10:30 pm Special Dinner Buffets Tue. & Sun. 5:00 pm – 9:30 pm Keep your eyes open for special holiday buffets. Address: 210, 3393 - 26 Ave NE 403 250-2515
According to this they have a buffet on Tuesday evenings too, although I would suggest checking that for the date in question, their hours can be somewhat flaky...
OE- this is easily accessible by Ctrain as well, it's in the Sunridge Mall parking lot, northwest side close to the hospital

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/11/2007 10:33:00 PM | This is still on... still taking suggestions for the variety of food and venue. There's already lots going on earlier in the month so looking at closer to the end of the month in terms of a date.
And you're right luvin it... the first one was Mongolian!
Keep those suggestions coming!

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/12/2007 8:07:46 AM | Julios Barrios isnt very authentic, however in warmer weather the patio setting can make up for that shortfall.
Thanks for organizing this Lola and co-hosts! All the ideas sound great!

| New Monthly event, Calgary Ethnic Food night. Posted: 3/13/2007 5:51:37 PM | I've done a bit of checking around and my first choice, since it combined both Indian and African cuisine, was the Samosa Grill that Luvin It suggested. However, when I contacted them and asked about their reservation policy, I was told that if I was booking for a large group, around 20 or 30 people, they required a 50% deposit up front. I'm not prepared to do that, and from past experience, we've learned that although people sign up, they don't always attend, nor do they indicate they are cancelling and/or remove themselves from the sign up list.
Next stop was the Blue Nile for Ethiopian fare. The fellow on the phone was extremely accommodating and they have no such reservation policy in effect.
So... my suggestion is the Blue Nile, on March 27 which is 2 weeks from now. If anyone has any serious objections please let me know as soon as possible. I'm going to start a thread in the events section tomorrow (Wednesday) to leave this one available for continuation for suggestions for the April dinner.
And I just spoke to Honest and Real and he has agreed to be my co-host!
