Do you look in the shopping cart?
Posted: 11/22/2006 4:54:47 AM
There was a comment in another forum that caught my interest, namely:

If I look in a guy's cart and see a bunch of frozen pizza or heat and eat meals, I assume he's single. If I see different ingredients, I assume he is cooking for 2 and thus unavailable.

So if you are approached at the supermarket, assuming the guy is at least interesting, what kind of judgements do you make about what is in the cart?

And, is there anything that you might see (only food items, not things like a treatment for crabs, yeast infection, pregnancy test, or something like that!) that would make you reject someone out of hand?

Yes I do look in other people's carts. I like to check out what everyone buys, not just men. I even look into my own cart as I'm unloading, wondering what my stuff says about me. Does it scream single parent with two huge teenage boys?
I don't think I would judge a man based on his cart of food, especially if there were many ingredients indicating he was dishing up a yummy concoction.

i wouldnt assume a man was taken based on his shopping list. not all bachelors behave like college kids.

a lot of junk food in the cart is the only thing that would turn me off.

^^ i don't think junk food would be the biggest turn off... probably an anti-fungal cream would top that list for me...

I glance at what others have put on the conveyor after or before me to see what I may have forgotten or could have gotten myself...I could not assume to read a person by what their purchases are because there is always the chance they are shopping for someone else.

I make my kids go pick up thing for me all the time...I was also known to grocery shop for my grandmother as she did not get out well. It happens...I HATE shopping.

The only time I pay attention to what a person has in their cart is during the time I'm trying to find a shorter line.

I tend to make my own food so I don't buy a lot of frozen stuff. I guess I should if I want to show the cutie in line that I'm single?!

I dont necessarily think I would judge a man by what he had in his shopping cart..but hey what a wonderful way to start up a conversation with someone of the opposite sex dont you think????
You see something interesting in his/her cart...and make a comment like, hey now thats interesting, how do you use that "whatever" in your meal.....are you making something special for your boyfriend/girlfriend? Easy way to find out if someone is single or not..and not look like an idiot..dont you think?

Well how about liquor?

I work in a liquor store and I can try to assume a guy is single based on what he may buy. I used to have a crush on a guy that came in about once every two weeks and always on a friday. He used to buy a mickey of rye and a bottle of pop. From this I made an assumption that he was single. After about 6 months of the buying the same thing, he all of a sudden started looking at wines....so I started thinking, okay he has a girlfriend. Sure enough a few weeks later he came in with a girl and bought wine.

quite honestly I had never thought to do that.... but then again I had been married for centuries...............

hmmm, I think I wouldn't judge someone by what they put in their cart. But I guess if a saw Depends or Diapers in the cart, I would think they are either taking care of an elderly person (or have some serious problems themselves) and if it's diapers, I would think 'Married, with kids...NEXT".

that's about it. nothing else I could think of that could really put me off.........

I check for girly supplies first and foremost. You can totally tell by their cart if they are single or not. If they appear to be single, I'll accidently crash my cart into theirs. Problem is, they can see from my cart that I'm a mom!

^^^ Hockey, they don't care if your a mom. Just put some beer in the cart to distract them.

I actually asked a girl out at a grocery store once. We made eye contact all over the store and she pulled in right behind me at the check out. Nervously, I started some conversation and then the cashier looks at her and says "they can help you down there" . We are both looking at each other with horror in our eyes. I said "I only have a few things I'll be through soon" just so she had an excuse to stay in line. Date ended in a food fight.

They dont sell booze in grocery stores here. :(
But I did pick up a guy once in a grocery store. I had seen him about here and there and we always exchanged smiles. One day, finally, I got the courage to walk up to him in the produce section. I said with a smile (as I walked by) "dont sqeeze the tomatoes, you might get caught". He smiled back from across the produce section. I gave him my number via someone who worked there... 2 days later he called. We dated for 2 years.

LMAO - I always get a chuckle out of guys buying all the frozen stuff - and then they say they cook at home!!! You can usually tell the single guys in line by the purchases he makes. If there is fresh fruit/vegetables and meat in the pile you can tell he's taken!!!

If you look in my shopping cart you will see me hitching a ride in it and some poor sucker pushing it! If you bump into me, it will take me two seconds to convince you to do my shopping for me and help me carry it to my car... as well as comp. me a bag of sherberts!

Two reasons:
1/ I cannot push I have to lean over it and try to scoot along at breakneck speed, much the way I drive cars in conjested areas: almost falling into it, until I get a superior look from someone in the aisles that has a ticklist of meticulously measured foodstuffs... ingredients that they are purchasing with the view to only put on half an ounce that month, but lose 6 pounds!

2/ I hate trolleys I always find the dodgy one with the possessed wheel, that is magnetically drawn to the North Pole, also known as the voodoo counter, you know the one that has stuff no-one wants to buy, that is not only damaged but for veruukas and dental funghi....

Then if I look into another person's trolley and shudder with repulsion it is usually for three dealbreakers:

1/ they have p*rn.
2/ they have beer, peanuts, more beer, beans....even more beer!
3/ they own a hamster and have hamster food!

What makes me really curious about trolleys is where the beetroot jar came from in my trolley, these seem to materialise in my shopping basket every time I visit the Supermarket!

OP - I like making my own meals, so although I may buy frozen foods occasionally, those are more for end-of-the-work week celebration. Maybe it's the hunter in me, but I love going out to buy the ingredients to make my favorite meals. I'm not too fond of the long lineups though.

Not true! I come from a very Italian home and my mom made sure I knew how to cook. I've since taken a few different cooking courses on my travels. I've got the fresh fruit / veggies / spices, etc etc in my cart and I'm not taken! I just like to cook.

Where I come from most of the people are fairly healthy. If I see a good looking guy at the supermarket, and I do look in his cart ... normally the contents would be all fresh veggies and poultry.

Then again the good looking guys usually have some girl attached to them too Who knows who's picking the produce.

I've never really seen anything in a guy's cart that would make me think not to date him. Then again I've never seen medicinal stuff either.

Hey Nicky2Tone - that's why I said 'usually' - you are an exception to the rule!!!
Each time I started a conversation with a fresh food shopper he was attached!!
Just my experience!! You are lucky you had a good Mom to teach you to cook and that you continued that!!!

I've peeked, but it's usually when I'm in line waiting, and the guy is close enough for me to see his cart, and I am tired of counting the floor tiles. What I hate, is when I have to do the mad run to the market to get just a few needed forgotten previously things, and you have feminine stuff (!), baby food and metimucal (sp) wafers... (and I don't have kids and eat my veggies!) - then I'm just positive that every one in the market is checking out my items & I try to get thru there as if I'm being chased by the hounds of hell...

ummmmm --- WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG

thats all i ever have in my cart

I cant even guess what junk food looks like anymore

I have more healthy food in my cart - then the couples grocery shopping together -- they are the ones buying the junk instant foods frozen shit

no wonder the country is so obese -- percieved convenience

I guess I am an exception to the rule as well.... both in groceries as well as in the liquorstore... I rarely buy junkfood and if I do it is perhaps 1 item with a cart load of real food... I also buy more then most guys I see in the supermarket... and I also have a cat so there is cat litter and cat food in there some times too...
... And in the liquore store.. I mix and match.. a couple good bottles of wine, the occasional bottlle of gin and of course the essential beer

I buy all that stuff regardless of being single or attached.. although I may buy a few more bottles of wine than I would normally buy when I am attached..

I think the shopping/liquorstore cart thing tells more about the person's lifestyle and personality than it does about their being single or not... then again if a guy is buying women's pit-stick or tampons or something.. then either he is a real weirdo or he's attached.
