I think it's with the jelly. Maybe with the canned fruit.
It'll be in a glass jar, though.
I haven't bought any for a couple years.

Mussleman's makes a great chunky with cinnamon.
edit: just rememered that was apple sauce. lol

Yeah. Butter will be with the jelly.

I live in Canada....and have never seen this ingredient....any direction you can give me would be greatly appreciated....ty kindly....

most but not all grocery stores should carry apple butter - look in the higher priced jam section where they keep Robertson's, etc. (usually on the top shelves) or if you have a good German deli or such in town, try them - they usually carry a whole range of "butter" - apple, cherry, etc.

If you can't find any, here are 3 recipes - 1st one is the one I use at the end of summer so I have enough on hand for winter.

Mennonite Apple Butter
7 cups the best applesauce you can get your hands on
2 cups apple cider - NOT apple juice
1-1/2 cups honey
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. ground allspice

Whisk everything together in your slow cooker, cover, and cook on LOW for 14 or 15 hours (depending on the moisture content of your applesauce.) OR in a 350°F oven until thickened. That's all there is to it. You may freeze it or put it by using the hot-water bath method.

All Day Apple Butter #1
5-1/2 lb. apples; peeled and finely chopped
4 cups sugar
2-3 tsp. cinnamon, to taste
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. salt

Place apples in slow cooker. Combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt; pour over apples and mix well. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Reduce heat to low; cover and cook for 9-11 hours or until thickened and dark brown, stirring occasionally (stir more frequently as it thickens to prevent sticking). Uncover and cook on low 1 hour longer. If desired, stir with a wire whisk until smooth. Spoon into freezer containers, leaving 1/2" headspace; cover and refrigerate or freeze.

All Day Apple Butter #2
5-1/2 pounds apples, peeled and diced
4 cups sugar
1 tbsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. salt

Place apples in crock pot. Combine rest of items and stir to mix well. Cover and cook on low for 12-13 hours (overnight is good). Puree in blender. Ladle into hot sterilized canning jars; process in boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

I love apple butter on toast! I have only ever seen it home-made for sale at farmer's markets or bake sales. It is like jam..... but much better!

its really super easy to make useing the crock pot recipes posted earlier. The thing about making it, for those of you have never had it, when your friends and family taste this delicious concoction for the first time, you'll be able to say..."I made it!"...

Classic, you can call around for me if I ever need food info... I can't do it myself that well ! But seriously, I have always thought of you as a valuble and very helpful resource here on this site. You have great recipes for almost everything, or at least here for everyone when no one else has it. You're awesome! I think your calling around for this apple butter goes way over the top, long distance plan or not. Just very nice to know you care about us all!!!

^^^thanks for the vote of confidence ... dad said if you could help with something what's 5 minutes out of your life - agree with that and seeing I worked in the food industry for 10 years I knew exactly which department to ask - both calls took a total of 3 minutes.

Personally, I don't think making the calls was a big deal - I had the time (indoors watching big, fluffy snowflakes fall), not to mention it saves both ladies time looking for the product.

I haven't seen Apple butter in Alberta grocery stores but I have found it at Community Health Foods in Calgary, AB. So check them out if your in Calgary (maybe they have one in Edmonton too??)

When I lived in Ontario it was much easier to find at the local grocery store. Enjoy!

OK. I'm really not trying to be mean to all the Canadians here. But if you want Apple Butter you are not going to go to the local grocer to find it.

Apple butter cannot be bought from a store. It is made, starting out the night before with all the apples getting peeled, tossed into a 100+ year old copper cauldron, then before the sun rises you start the fire, then comes the biggest copper pot on a open air fire you've ever seen. The whole time the mix is stired with ancient wooden paddles.

Then the apples are cooked 'till the banjo player needs a sip of cider, then the spices and sugar are added and then it is stirred more and more. Then you ladle it into jars and seal them up.

MMMMMM...

Oak Glen California. Where I was raised. It's the perfect time of year for it also. need some just send your card # to. No I am kidding. You can buy it. It is hit & mis @ chain stores. Many times it is by applesauce instead of Jams & jellies. I probably could find a grower that ships out if you really have trouble, but it would be a few days before I could drive up there to get their info. Its only about 10 min. but you probably know how long that can turn into.
