Finding the right bible

Im christian and have been looking for a bible for quite some time now and cant seem to find a bible for young adults such as myself. I have found some for teens that deal with some of the issues I deal with but the ones for women are just not for me. Im hoping someone can help me figure this out.

Big book shops are a good place to look, christian ones.

A very broadly popular resource which is like what a pastor would like which is free is www.e-sword.net

The New Living Bible is easy to read.

Are you protestant or Catholic?

One I'd suggest you take a look at is the Jefferson Bible. It concentrates on the philosophy of Jesus, without all the mysticism. I think any real look at Jesus and Christianity should start there.

You can find it online here :

Thomas Jefferson believed that the ethical system of Jesus was the finest the world has ever seen. In compiling what has come to be called "The Jefferson Bible," he sought to separate those ethical teachings from the religious dogma and other supernatural elements that are intermixed in the account provided by the four Gospels. He presented these teachings, along with the essential events of the life of Jesus, in one continuous narrative.

Depends on what you are looking for from a Bible.

There are, of course, versions for children, versions for non-Christians (Skeptic's annotated Bible and the afore-mentioned Jefferson Bible), and (as you have mentioned) versions for women. To my thinking, they are rather revisionist; so I'll stick with unabridged translations.

NASV, or New American Standard Version, was written specifically to put the Bible in a modern language. It's a pretty easy read.

NIV, New International Version (used to be my fav), is a compromise between the literal version (like YLT) and NASV. There's less "rewriting" than the NASV while still being an easy read.

Young's Literal Translation, while being the least accessable, is also the closest to the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts

Finally, I'll mention the KJV (King James Version). Not because that version is particularly good (though it is very popular), but because it's easy to find the KJV online with Strong's Hebrew Concordance, which lets you look at and study the original word and their meanings.

You should always have a readable translation of the Bible (NRSV is my Bible of choice; everyone has a favourite, I think), and avoid the King James translation; it has several translation errors in it, and it is so overly verbose that it obscures meaning a lot of the time. Those who claim it is the only true Bible forget that it's only a translation.

But I would like to suggest, alongside a good standard translation, that you check out "Good As New: A Radical Retelling of the Scriptures" by John Henson. It is a reinterpretation of the New Testament. It has the stamp of approval from Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and it is a lot of fun to read.

N.B. Christian inerrantists will get their panties in a bunch over this edition, but read it anyway. It will give you "fresh eyes" with which to look at a lot of old stories that you thought you knew.

Its not actually the translation that is an issue for me its the extras the notes and such that relate to me and my life that i am looking for. As for the Catholic or Protestant question I am neither Im just a non-denominational Christian.

You don't really want somebody else telling you how to relate something you read to your own life, do you?

May I suggest the excellent "virtual bible" blueletterbible.org as something that might intrest you.

It has nearly every modern translation, Hebrew, and Greek as well as a concordance and some useful search features.

I would reccomend a "life application study bible". They are quite expensive though. they have a lot more depth then a study bible but you are going to pay. Mine cost me $130. Almost every passage has an explanation which can be helpful but like someone else said, do you really want someone else telling you what it means.

The last time you watched a movie or read a book that inspired you did you need extra bits added in? Normally when I have trouble understanding a character in anything I watch or read, and sometimes real people, I just put myself in their shoes and it tends to make sense on its' own. And tells a far better story...

I don't really know what it is you are asking...

Do you want:

A) to know what the real words spoken by these people were, or as close an approximation to the original extant documents as can be apprehended by a layperson so that you can compare and contrast??

OR

B) Prechewed, trusting that someone else has your best interests at heart and knows what you want to hear?

Think about it.

Why are you doing this? Are you picking up a spiritual belief to make yourself feel comfortable? Complete? Or is it an essential element of your life that addresses meaningful questions, without which you will be less of a person without the answers? If that is the case, do you not owe it to yourself to be very responsible to get the best and clearest possible answers and seriously pursue the truth of the matter?

Or is a spiritual pursuit just something one picks up like a Kelly Clarkson CD? Not pointing a finger...but as someone who daily ponders these issues, it is something to strongly consider...what do you really want to know...why? And do you REALLY want to know the answers or are you prepared to just be led by the nose by someone who will tell you what you want to or expect to hear?

Just as easily done with biblical messages as anything else...think very seriously about it.

Seek Truth, Question everything.

To find a good Bible with notes for teens, yes, you should balance reading with an attitude of acceptance with questions. Questions that can firm your faith when they come from others later, so you are not shaken.

The childish thing is to go to one authority, as a child sees it, and then to go to another with the view, and to return to the first with a contradiction... Back and forth.

Although Proverbs says their is surety in a multitude of counselors. But they should in this case have the Spirit, who authored the OT and NT as their teacher. One Spirit with no contradictions.

Pentecostals have 100 yrs since the 1906 revival started. A Bible with reference to tried old Spirit filled teachers and preachers for youth is a good idea. Spurgeon, RA Torrey, Wigglesworth, Seymour, Jonathan Edwards... be good. Why start from the beginning or with conspiracy theories...?

rawkkitty,

Most Bible's or Holy Books say the same thing, and will contain both the Old and New Testemants. Most Christian's are realy into the New Testemant which of course pertains to Jesus Christ. If it is simple language that you are after might I suggest the New International Version, the language is about as simplistic as it get's. But on the note of you looking into specific issues you might want to try http://www.biblegateway.com/, it has many different versions, and you can search for specifics.

Hope this helps some

Cheers

OP I want to commend you for what you are doing, because instead of seeking an answer from sources that can be detrimental to the mind, as well as the body, you have chosen to seek inspiration to guide you.
There have been some great suggestions here for Bibles, and don't forget a Bible Concordance, which you can find in the back of many Bibles.
Here is a link I hope you will find beneficial, and help you in developing an awareness of the scriptures in the Bible
