| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 12:13:39 PM | Okay, so I got my first ever Flu shot today, at work.
I was a little apprehensive about getting one, as I have heard that others have gotten sick, as a result.
Have any of you ever had one; and what was your experience like?
Did you respond negatively, or positively after getting the vaccination?
I was always opposed to introducing foreign "bugs" into my body; but, this time I decided to get innocculated(sp).
Any experiences that you would like to share?

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 12:18:33 PM | | I got them for a few years in a row when my kids were young as they were preemies and had health issues. I think about it yearly now haven't gotten it. Also don't like the idea of introducing it into my body. I have never reacted poorly from it personally. I have read/heard that some people will feel slightly "fluish" afterwards but that it is impossible to get the flu from the vaccine itself. | |

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 12:21:05 PM | | I tend to like my body to fight any bug naturally. I have a real problem with the way the medical profession deals with illness' nowadays, prescribing drugs like they were candy. The more meds you take,,, the more meds ya need. So, no flu shot for me. | |

Posted: 11/29/2006 12:28:09 PM | ..........introducing foreign material to my body in the tiny amount they give you , seems like a whole lot better idea than being flat on my back for the 'true flu'...........six weeks of nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, pneumonia and the possibility that I could pass it on to anyone in my family with a weaken immune system!
Oh yeah....and the amount of drugs I may need to fight it............
Tiny dose of vaccine.......slight achy, slight fever possibly for day or two.........tough choice?

Not being a smarta $ $ here sweet, but in my 45 years I have NEVER been on my back for six weeks with an illness. Closest I got was in the hospital for 10 days, almost biting it because I listened to a doctor who said I had gall stones when I fact I had a ruptured appendix. Other than that, you would be hard pressed to find a day I missed from work or school because of the "dreaded" flu.
And not getting into your personal family history,,,but why do you think there is now so many "weak" immune systems out there nowadays???

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 1:12:19 PM | Never get sick.....haven't had a bad flu since about 1970.....but this year I got a flu shot. Not so much for me but just in case I dragged a virus into my Mom's place. She has COPD and can't tolerate ANY infection.
I didn't react at all.....no sniffles, no aches nothing. Just my normal cranky bitter self.

I'm not a big fan of pills/shots or any other 'preventative' medicince. People need to understand that the adage "That which does not kill you serves to make to stronger" is a pretty safe bet on all levels. Mentally, emotionally and physically.
I mean, come on... I'll order a meat lovers pizza and leave it on the counter for 3 days... and then finish it on day 4!

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 1:29:12 PM | hence part of my point....
I have awesome health, hardly ever get sick but it is not about me!
I have learned that I may be a 'carrier' to others, bring the virus along with me, therefore for others health, i receive the 'shot' to protect those with a weakened immune system.
And to Walts........although you have had awesome health in your years.......unfortunately (like me) your not as young as you used to be........respiratory wise......
a good pneumonia is what ends the life of those with the flu, not the nausea and vomitting.........young children and elderly are the victims along with those with chronic/severe illness.
Research information is available for those who would like to know more about it, via your health authorities....protect those around you, if you feel you are healthy, by getting your shot! (this service announcement brought to you by your friendly health provider....aka...drive by injector!)

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 1:33:20 PM | Some people tolerate the shot just fine, others get sick within 2 weeks of getting it. Thing is, its for last years strain and every year its a new one. I dont think they do much... I refuse to get them... dont find they work all that great. Hope it works for you... flu stinks! | |
|
| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 2:10:19 PM | I always get them ...better safe than sorry..... and ...lol..its a must where I work.... the flu shot is really no big deal.....I have had them and never got the flu.. but, of course medical professionals are really only guessing what stain of flu will come our way...they may guess wrong. Their track record has been pretty good so, what hell...it may save another person from getting the flu from you. You may fight the flu no problems but young and old people do not... in fact it could kill them..... | |
|
| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 2:12:17 PM | Ive never had it done... its just not my thing. I get a bad cold once a year but thats about it. So I dont even see the point for myself.
However, my x-h was/is adamant about getting it every year. It did affect him the first year he got it... like cold symtoms. But it seems now it doesnt affect him at all. I guess it just depends on your own body chemistry.

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 2:25:47 PM | You MAY be a carrier... kinda like that mail you get that says, "You may already be a winner!?" Gotta love the fear tactics!
OK - get ready to flame me, hate me, whatever it is that is going to distract your brain from accepting the truth.
We are SUPPOSED to get sick and DIE! We are mortals. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the event, we all die of the same thing... lack of oxygen to the brain.
We don't need stem cell research or a cure for AIDS. There is a good chance cancer will never be beat. The world is overpopulated and there are checks and balances in nature that even humans need to adhere to, but we do our best to pervert them.
Still fuming!?
Don't get me wrong, I've weeped for a dog I saw laying in the road... it had been hit by a car, and I stayed with it until he died. And the loss of a loved one... well, we've all lost loved ones - I'm not a beast. But people need to be shocked and woken up... the path we have felt soo safe following for the last 100 years has taken us from our natural course.

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 2:41:39 PM | Diogi..sigh.......I agree to a point....u can take it a step further be saying why are we wasting our blood supply on old and the weak ....we should save it for the young and strong...same with transplants???? where do u draw the line???? | |

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 3:02:24 PM | Tracy,
Therein lies the problem... we can't draw the line. We've found ways to extend our lives and fend off the inevitable for just a little longer... and it has made us believe we are the better for it.
If I was in the hospital dying, and needed someone's blood/liver/heart etc would I hope they had one around to stick in me?! You bet your ass I would. I'm sure when it is my time to go, I'll be kicking and screaming and cursing every deity I can imagine.
The point I'm trying to make is we have never had the power to 'draw the line' when it comes to death, so medical science has dulled our sense of the purpose of sickness.
We think we have lines to draw, philosophically... but the only true line in this equation is that we are all going to flat-line.

I hear you though. Things are getting a little too crowded down here. I think its time for a lunar colony.

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 3:34:28 PM | My doctor recommended I get the flu shot every year after I had pneumonia in '95. In the eleven years I've had it I have never had an adverse reaction to the shot. Maybe a little sore on the spot where the needle went in, nothing else.
I think it's a positive, proactive, protective action to take not only for myself but for others as well.

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 3:56:20 PM | bah.
Flu shots... I had one once, I got horribley sick within days - swore I would never have it again.
Out of the FIVE surgeons I work with, NONE of them get it - and all AGREE that there is no medical proof that it actually PREVENTS the flu.
Thing is, the vaccine is only good for a cpl strains of influenza. Its not going to prevent you from getting the other god-knows-how-many-other-strains are out there!
A bunch of medical propaganda I say!!
To hell with the vaccine, give the Nurses and the Medics the wage increase they so much deserve!! LOL - afterall, we are the ones who look after your sick asses regardless of whether or not you had the flu shot!
|
| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 4:02:23 PM | only people that i think should really get a flu shot are the elderly and sick folks whose immune system sucks and younger kids if you are healthy otherwise you shouldn't really need one
i don't remember the last time i ever had the flu and have never had a flu shot in my life

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 5:04:33 PM | I personally do not get the flu shot, although it is available to me and would likely be a good idea considering where I work. It is a choice that I make. My daughter and grandson get one every year, he is very immune compromised and in all honesty we get him every inoculation/vaccination available to preserve his immune system as much as possible. There really is no need, in my humble opinion, to tax one's immune system on a regular basis just to see if it works.
This being said from someone who has been fighting a very nasty virus for the past 4 weeks......hmmm.....perhaps I should heed my own advice.
Simply put a person can readily access the stats on how many people die every year in Canada from the flu and we all know it is only a matter of time until the next global pandemic, things are warming up on that front already. Really no idea who will survive and who won't, I am sure it will be a mixture of both those who have the shot and those who don't......but then only one way to find out isn't there??
|
| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 5:25:30 PM | I am with those that don't believe in shooting foreign stuff into their bodies...never have and don't plan on it....I believe we have an amazing immune system and to help it along with natural goodness...hence my health is great
if a time comes that I do need medical assistance then I want it to work in my body, using medical intravention constantly weakens its effects when you need it...like the overuse of antibiotics
just my 2cents | |

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 5:35:08 PM | I have industrial asthma contracted from a previous job. I have gotten a Flu shot almost every year for the past 9 yrs. and am very thankful that they are available. I have never had an adverse reaction to them and they really do work (at least for me). If I do get a "bug", it is usually at the end of the flu season twards spring and summer when the new strains are starting to show up that aren't covered in the vaccine. It usually is a milder bout than I would have experienced if I didn't get the shot. The alternative for me if I don't get the shot, is the greater chance of getting Bronchial Pneumonia and the one year I did not get the shot (thinking that I didn't need it) I suffered for most of the winter. | |

| Flu shots... Posted: 11/29/2006 6:06:10 PM | I get a flu shot every year. Never had a reaction, but everyone is different.
And I agree with the poster who stated a little discomfort now is worth not getting more sick with the actual flu.
