| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 11/30/2006 3:41:40 PM | I prefet to take medical advice from doctors who practive medicine no those who write about it on the internet. You should consider reading up on it in a medical journal instead of the internet. I've seen first hand the effect antidepresants can have on someone who actually needs them. | |

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 11/30/2006 6:57:51 PM | OP I'm so glad to read that you broke the chains of these drugs!!
Of course you're correct in your information but this being a forum with an overwhelming amount of American public in it - well your information won't generally be accepted.
It's hard to dig passed the brainwashing but do know that there ARE some educated people that hang around so try not to take anything negative that anyone says..... to heart.
Remember.... they really CAN'T understand at this time. Have patience with them.

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 11/30/2006 7:53:24 PM | I've seen reports where there are more pharmacutical lobbyists in D.C. that senators and congresspeople combined.
That's just the start of it.
The FDA now relies on data provided by pharamacutical companies to determine whether a drug is safe, or not.
Like the data would ever show a drug is unsafe....
A med. for this... A med. for that... A med. for the this that may give you that... A med. for the that that may give you this...
Then another med to combat both...

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 11/30/2006 7:55:57 PM | | I agree with the OP. Americas drug manufacturers are more concerned with the $$$ than anything else. Although I am not condoning medication of any type if somebody seriously needs it, just the fact that I have seen many Doctors feel it's ok to "medicate" a person because its easier, instead of taking time to listen to them-then again this is also an insurance company factor-->your doctor is actually only given 15 mins. to diagnose you in his office per them believe it or not. | |

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 11/30/2006 8:15:20 PM | An issue I feel incredibly passionate about! I am educataed in these matters and STILL think they are overused, especially in children. Not just antidepressants either, what about the anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, lithium and antiparkinsonian drugs to counteract the effects of the antipsychotics, which are nasty. It makes me sick that these drugs are handed out like candy when the underlying issues are not even dealt with. Especially in children, whose brain is still developing.
Some people need the help of medication, but not to the level we see today. Doctors get extra money when the numbers of certain diagnoses go up, this of course necessitates prescribing medication, which ultimately feeds the pharmaceutical companies. Is anyone else disgusted by the advertising? They do not allow it in Canada, but it doesn't matter, because we get american TV anyway.
My sister has a thyroid problem, which causes depression, rather than deal with that, the doctor tried 4 different psychotropic medications... none worked and cause many side effects. Then he told her that she might be happier if she were to have a baby. She waited 2 hours for him to write a prescription and to tell her to get pregnant. Wow.
I could go on and on with way worse stories, and it won't stop until... well I don't know what it will take... but I for one will not stay quiet in my corner of the world :)

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 12/1/2006 4:39:04 PM | Oh my goodness it looks like I've hit a couple of nerves and ever so unintentionally at that too.
Amazing how some might mistake empathy for condescension.
Hmmmmmm | |

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 12/1/2006 5:39:00 PM | Artista,
Perhaps you meant well, and I for one will not refuse you the benefit of the doubt that you do feel empathy for those who take these drugs, but the truth is that your post did come across as condescending. So does your latest one.
You are not a medical doctor or reseacher who has a full understanding. Further, you do not know others well enough to proclaim that they do not "know". The "be patient with them" comment was very insulting. Many of us have done our own research and only after exhausting other avenues have determined that the use of these drugs were beneficial, even in light of the risks. There are risks to this disease as well, as there are risks to undergoing remedies that do not work. There are risks to herbal alternatives. Suffice it to say, there are risks in anything.
The truth is, not everyone experiences the problem the OP mentioned. They are side-effects, certainly, but I know a few people who felt they needed these drugs and their conditions improved dramatically to the point that they were then able to concentrate on the cognitive aspect of dealing with depression and other medical issues, and always under the supervision of a medical professional licenced to prescribe the medication. Once they were able to focus on the cognitive therapy, they slowly were taken off the medication and continued the cognitive therapy. They are no longer on medication and they have better tools to help them deal with their condition. This is but one example of how these types of drugs help people.
Depression and mental health issues can destroy a person's life. I've known two people who died from these indirectly, and that is what is so incidious about mental health problems. One died due to suicide, and one from making choices that included self-medication with illicit drugs.
The problem is huge. It is far too simplistic to dismiss all of these by slight of hand because of dissenting reports. If one is to make an educated decision, one has to weigh all of the facts, and not lean in favour of one side. Psychotropic medication does carry risk, but so do heart medications, hormonal medications, herbal supplements, and doing nothing at all. No medication should be prescribed without serious contemplation on the behalf of both doctor and patient, in collusion and with a game plan on how to effectively treat the disorder. It is equally as irresponsible to under-prescribe as it is to over-prescribe. It is the balance that is so hard to maintain.
Peace. | |

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 12/1/2006 9:38:59 PM | ARTISTA:
I've also seen first hand how anxiety destroys lives and depression is a fatal medical disease without medication.
You really ought keep your 'opinion' on both sides a little less condescending and know it all.
I wouldn't wish depression on anyone but you could use a good course of it, and compassion too. I hope you never struggle with the 'vitamin route' and end up dead.
you're a knucklehead, so degrading...
Thanks to Babs!! | |

So what happens when I eat a healthy diet, supplement with vitamins, exercise, don't consume artifical sweeteners and still want to drive off a bridge?
Dr. Mercola does seem like a fantastic salesman though.

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 12/3/2006 11:05:35 AM | I agree, but sometimes there is no other choice and that is when you are propperly clinically depressed in a serious way.
My own doctor has warned me against going on any anti-depressants and says the side effects are sometimes far worse than the origonal symptoms, and they are very addictive, you become very dependant, and its very hard to come off them again, entering a very dangerous catch 22 situation where u may never be right ever again... And to think, my doctor at the time offered me Valium when I was just 18, good job i turned it down!: fustrated:
|
| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 12/3/2006 1:10:16 PM | ^^^ Antidepressants are not addictive and you do not become dependent on them. You are thinking benzodiazapenes such as valium (clonazepam, lorazepam, etc). These are benzos, not SSRIs, MAOs ,etc.
The only time I was ever prescribed a benzo was when I was caring for my dying mother 3 years ago and my nerves were shot and I was not sleeping or eating. I was only prescribed them for 2 months and my doctor promptly took me off of them after she had died and he closely monitored my use of them as well while I was on them.
I am amazed that there is such misinformation still out there!!

| antideressants are TOTALLY bad for you health Posted: 12/3/2006 5:16:12 PM | Well I had a friend whom anti depressants almost cost her life. I went to a doctor with anxiety problems and he just claimed i was doing recreational drugs, wouldn't believe otherwise, and just gave me some chill pills that I never took. Then I went to a shrink once. Instead of offering therapy he just wanted to sign me up on some crazy pills of them. Well I refused and told him about the friend and why, he practically kicked me out. Im all better now thanks to a great Naturopath, and then us finding that I really had led poisoning, which most likely caused the anxiety disorder... Cudos to our great health system.
Fact is anti depressants can cause serious side effects, which can include suicide, or other crazy things that you can do while affected by them. Are they bad for everyone? Maybe no, but I would sure as hell not take them. A good naturopath can be much better for problems like this. Here in Canada they are properly trained professionals, and the ones that know what they are doing are very good, and are worth the money. He helped me where others didn't care, or just gave up on me. I mean three years ago I couldnt go to the mall, and had problems even just going to school because of anxiety attacks, and now I can live a full life.
