| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 3/31/2005 4:12:31 PM | I can remember rushing home after school, anxious to kick back and put on some of my favorite record albums and just chill. One of my first records was Yes - Fragile. There was something almost magical about dropping the needle onto Jon Anderson's multitracked vocal on "We Have Heaven". I could not get enough of it and I listened to that song over and over.
While listening to the music, one could stare at the artwork from the album. This was in the day when you had large album covers that you could actually display on your wall as art instead of the postage stamp size booklet they now have in CD cases. Yes album covers were always so cool. Once I bought Fragile, I couldn't wait to get my hands on every single record they had out. Relayer, Going For The One, Close To The Edge.....then, one day I brought home "Tales of Topicgraphical Oceans" The cover looked fantastic! I sat back waiting for some tunes to take me away......unfortunately they stumbled on this album.
But I will always love Yes, past and present, and remember them as the soundtrack to my youth.

Alan Parsons Project.....I Robot, Wouldn't Want To Be Like You.
That song and David Bowie singing "Heroes" on the Midnight Special were the only cool acts that night. I am gonna rummage through my CD's. Flashback Time!

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/8/2007 2:03:51 AM | Ok, just getting around to the world of Forums. I was curious about your feelings regarding Tales From Topographic Oceans. In the two years since, have you given that album any further consideration? I saw that tour in 1974 in Roanoke, VA. They opened the evening with Siberian Khatru, Close To The Edge, continuing with And You And I. After a few moments of the band stood looking at each other, nodding their heads, taking deep breaths, etc., the first strains of The Revealing Science Of God were heard. It was quite an experience at the time, and the audience was spellbound! Yes was unique in that they could perform these 4 pieces of music (along with their usual set list) quite proficiently. Tales and Relayer (to me) defined a very creative period for the band and music itself. Even today, there are legions of fans of this amazing group who feel the band was defined by specific periods in their musical evolution. I find that extremely refreshing! | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/8/2007 5:39:04 AM | I still remember my first time hearing YES.
A buddy of mine had a party and i ended up staying the night instead of driving home.
I remember he put YESSONGS on.....i never knew the band at all.
By the time the album was over i was a huge fan.
It was like the beatles took acid for me.
Awesome stuff that shall forever remain a signifigant part of my youth.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. Ladies and Gentlemen..... Still have the album(s)...remember first seeing the back cover....all those instuments dwarfing the three players....you can barely see Carl....Keith with the huge wall in front of him...and Greg seemingly standing alone....blew me away...(I was 12). The piano solo on Jeremy Bender is still my favorite to this day.
Still....You Turn Me On Fanfare For The Common Man
Genesis had a first album entitled "From Genesis To Revelation"....short "pop" tunes, but because of the title was put in the "religious section" of many stores. Pretty odd album considering what followed....Nursery Crimes for one....
I always thought of these, and others, (King Crimsom) bands as more "classical rock" due to their incorporation of classical music into their repertoire.

...Benny the Bouncer is actually starting to grow on me.....

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/9/2007 5:15:01 PM | Yes kicked open the door and introduced me to Prog rock. I like all the forementioned groups, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater...... But I always came back to Yes.
An interesting DVD to pick up is Steve Howe's Remedy. He went on tour with his two son's and performed much of his solo work. Unfortunately, none of it really compares to his work with Yes, but it is pleasant enough.
You get a kick out of watching him perform just for the sheer enjoyment of performing. Yes are pretty much on hiatus and who even knows if they will reform.
They did some pretty big tours in the past five years. All are getting up there in age. In fact, they are about five years behind The Rolling Stones in longevity. As far as Topographical Oceans.... I bought the CD and really enjoyed the bonus tracks which were quite a bit different. I've grown used to it. I still like Relayer and Going For The One much more.
I recently watched the video of Yes - Union tour. These guys are much better than they were during the Union days.
As long as they can still get up onstage and thrill the younger generation with Awaken.... more power to them.
Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow....... breathtaking.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/11/2007 5:19:12 AM | There's a DVD available (Amazon.com) of Yes/Live '75 that was originally filmed by Japanese Arts. This concert took place on May 10th, 1975 at QPR in London and showcased songs from Relayer. The video quality is really good. The audio however left much to be desired as it was never re-mixed for release. I will assume it was a direct output of the FOH mixing console. This video truly captured the band at their peak of creativity. Thanks for mentioning Jon's Olias Of Sunhillow album. Also, Jon states that Animation will be released on CD soon, if not already. Are you familiar with the work Jon did with Vangelis? There were 4 albums altogether, Short Stories, The Friends Of Mr. Cairo, Private Collection, and Page Of Life. These are absolutely wonderful recordings. There was a Best Of J & V released but contained edited versions of songs from the first 3. The last Yes concert I attended was the Masterworks tour in 2000. They covered treasures such as Gates Of Delirium, The Revealing Science Of God, Awaken...Songs I never thought I'd hear live again. Wow! | |
|
| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/11/2007 10:40:50 AM | Being a fan of Relayer, I was very excited to get a copy of Yes - QPR.
Unfortunately, the audio..... whoa, bad. When they play the Gates of Delirium, you can hardly hear Steve Howe's guitar at all! But it is facinating to see Yes during this period.
Jon, waif thin,
Steve, resembling Gollum on guitar, madly jerking back and forth on distorted jazz riffs....a thin Chris wearing fur boots up to his knees. I didn't even recognize Alan White. Patrick Moraz is fantastic on this video. I wonder whatever happened to him? I heard the Moody Blues kicked him out.
There is a Jon Anderson DVD availible. It's called Tour of the Universe. But I've heard bad things about there being a ton of commercials on the disc.
I heard there was a falling out between Jon and Vangelis after the Page of Life album. This album wasn't even availible in the States for a few years. Only as an import. It would be nice for them to reconcile their differences and bless us with another great recording.
I don't have any Dream Theater albums. I just recently starting listening to them thru their videos. I really get a charge out of them performing the entire Pink Floyd classic Dark Side of the Moon. That video was pretty good. Wonder what the original members of Floyd thought of it?
I have a guilty pleasure. I also really like Jon's christmas album.
Yes, Jon Anderson released an album of christmas music..... spacy happy christmas music. It's called 3 Ships. Guaranteed to put you into the christmas mood. He even sings O Holy Night. This was released around 1985.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/11/2007 4:00:58 PM | Rick Wakeman said not long ago, "We each weigh induvidually what we use to weigh collectively"! If you go to jonanderson.com you'll get the latest news, I'm sure. And no, I didn't hear that Jon and Vangelis had a 'falling out"! I expect no less from a Scorpio (Jon) and an Aries (Vangelis)...LOL! My fave tune of their albums is Horizon. Speaking of Dream Theatre, I had the pleasure of seeing their piano man in Kannapolis last month. He opened for Blackfield. I'll be attending a show in that area in May when Porcupine Tree headlines. Steve Wilson of BF and PT reminds me scarily of a young Jon Anderson. Guilty pleasures time on the show! I too, bought the cassette after it was released. I've never found it on CD and of course someone just had to borrow it! You can guess the rest...! There were really good moments there, especially the final chorus of O Holy Night! Just for kicks one evening, I went to YouTube and dug around for Yes stuff. Bunches of great clips, rare videos, etc. The gem of the lot was Jon being interviewed on a broadcast discussing the release of Olias! He had that "look" back then! I saw the Tales tour in Roanoke, VA in January '74. They opened with Siberian Khatru, Close To The Edge, And You And I. You could see them looking anxiously at each other knowing what was coming up next! There was a long nervous pause..then "Dawn of light lying between the silence and sold sources..." That leg of the tour saw Rick at the keyboards before he decided that if God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made 'em out of meat! | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/15/2007 7:43:37 PM | | I love all the classic prog stuff but have been really getting into Spock's Beard (Walking on the wind ... my personal fave!) I realize they've been around for a while but i just recently discovered them and can't believe they slipped under my radar ... lol | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/17/2007 11:35:48 PM | Classic progressive rock addict here, too, bought Kate Bush's CD The Whole Story today because I wore out the tape.
ELP -- Saw them in concert for Paper Moon was it? Forgettable album but great concert in a cosy 2000 seat theatre, Keith with his usual antics of playing upside down and while at a headstand ...etc. Brain Salad, Trilogy, and the self titled are my three favs.
APP -- Awesome!
There was a guy who used to do these progressive music shows at the local college that me and friends would visit. Introduced to Yes, genesis, kate bush, tull, and a bunch of others. Never got into dream theatre. Tangerine Dream was very progressive and leading for the time.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/18/2007 12:50:22 AM | I have been a prog rock geek since I was 14 yrs old...........
we would sit in 'some older kids basement and smoke some reefer' we would marvel at the sounds of YES,genesis, king crimson
I am glad you mentioned Dream Theater, there latest dvd -'score' has lots of pro rock jams........ some of it might be 'a little heavy for some'....but they are simply amazing muscians

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/18/2007 3:01:36 AM | | Kate Bush is a name that doesn't come up everyday. I saw her on SNL in '78 performing Rolling The Ball and The Man With The Child In His Eyes. It may have been her US debut. She's an amazing artist no matter what genre you may try to place her in. Her latest album, Aerials is a 2-CD set of new material. For pure Kate, it's hard to beat Hounds Of Love from around '85. | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/18/2007 3:34:52 AM | I remember when I got turned on to the Yessongs album, a 3 LP set. I just loved the Roger Dean artwork on the jacket and many of the other Yes albums (I'm talking LP records here).
And I remember getting turned on to Pink Floyd's Darkside of The Moon, another fantastic album. Progressive rock is great! And there are other progressive bands like ELP, King Crimson, Genisis and many more too.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/18/2007 6:06:24 PM | In the day when Zeppelin were gods (and they WERE and still ARE), in my little group of nerdy pot smokin' friends, Yes was the band to listen to. So here I am, thirty years later, and they are still permanently on my disc changer. However, it never occurred to me that they were "progressive", but just very very talented musicians who challenged the status quo. ****still very much in love with Jon Anderson*** So I guess I am the low watt bulb who didn't see this, lol.
I always thought Frank Zappa was "progressive".
And Toon, nice to "see" you back.....
Cheers, Raven | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/18/2007 11:14:05 PM | That is my favorite years of Kate's... The CD 'The Whole Story' I got has hounds of love on it and The man with the child in his eyes and babooshka...
the funny part the guy doing the progressive rock show was he had the original reviews of these artists. Rolling Stone had kate down as a "neurotic airy fairy sounding" and all these put downs. I saw Aerials on the shelf... Is it any good?
I saw the offshoot of King Crimson in a small venue as well, I still have the blue metal concert pin I bought that day... The League of Crafty Guitarists............ 13 guitars on stage all tuned to fifths, almost mathematical sounding, but impressive.... from beginners up to experts. This gal sat off to the side of the stage meditating with her hands in the thumb-forefinger touching, palms up. I haven't kept up on them since. A lot of that was through a friend who had more time for that kind of stuff than I do.
The remake/remastering of Larks Tongue in Aspic is really something, especially the heart crunching sounds in the background as he sings "and I thought my heart would break". Book of Saturday I can just about listen to endlessly, it nearly puts me in a trance.
I found a bunch of APP stuff on YouTube, that was great. Didn't care much for the live singing as much. The emphasis seemed all wrong. There are some creative takes on The Raven. Speaking of that I was surprised the Will Smith movie I robot did not use APPs I Robot track in the movie, would have been perfect for it with the paranoia mood of the song and the robot going mad.
I was really shocked when the other day I had on the local FM drivel that passes for music and I heard one of these latest hard rock bands using the lyrics from a song by Tonto's Expanding Headband.... Anyone remember them? "Mister you are better man than I. Mister you're a better man than I....."

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/19/2007 12:28:55 AM | | In the late 60's and up to the mid 70's the musical climate was considerably different. Record companies were formed by visionaries such as Ahmet Ertegun (Atlantic Records) out of passion and dedication to their industry. No doubt that same drive and energy exists today. Yes, and their genre not only posessed sheer musical virtuosity, their creativity was allowed to develop without interference from the executive levels of the industry. This was mainly due to the fact that Yes sold millions of units with very little influence from the market forces at the time. | |
|
| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/19/2007 1:00:08 AM | Raven, you're not alone in your fascination with the voice of Jon Anderson. I've enjoyed this man's voice for 35 years. I have only to spend a few minutes with personal selections and I'm a better person simply for the listening. Interestingly, I'm moved by Jon's vocals in sections of a song rather than the entire performance, such as the last chorus refrain from "Rejoice" and last verse of "Circus Of Heaven" (Tormato), the closing verse from "Hearts" (90125), the "Soon" section from "Gates Of Delirium" (Relayer), the closing of "Ritual" (Tales From Topographic Oceans), of course "Awaken" (Going For The One) etc. One particularly moving performance that gets me every time is "Horizon" from Jon and Vangelis~Private Collection. If you've never heard the albums these two maestro's created, then you're in for a wonderful treat! | |
