There are a lot of people who call themselves Rastafarians because of the belief in herbal remedies and knowledge (particularly cannabis). For some, their ties to the religion don't extend beyond the smoking of ganja and growing dreadlocks.

The Rastafari movement has spread throughout much of the world and there are more than one million Rastafari faithful worldwide. I doubt all of them are black and have never heard that you need to be black to be a true rasta.

Note that the name Rastafarianism was coined by non-Rastas and some followers regard that term as improper and offensive.

Ahhhh

The women don't have to smoke up though. They're already enlightened.

What an awesome excuse to smoke dope eh? "Honey, I'm simply not at the same stage of enlightenment as you are, this is going to help me get there." How can you argue with that?

That being said, I don't think it matters what colour your skin is, as long as you follow whatever path is laid out.

Rastafari was Haile Salassi. RastafarianISM is in Jamaica. I've never heard of any in Ethiopia, although it might have migrated there from Jamaica.

When Haile Salassi visited there in 1972, he had no idea some people worshipped him as the fulfillment of a prophecy spoken by Marcus Garvey, militant black Jamaican living in Harlem who was deported in 1922, that there would soon be born: "a great black leader who would govern all of Africa"... which is where it started.. here's more:

The basics of Rasta are anti-white. There are however different sects within Rasta some of who don't care if your white. It tends to be very a patriarchal society.

I've studied it fairly deeply having dated a white Rasta woman. It really doesn't make any sense to me. They believe that Zion is Ethiopia. I can't imagine wanting to leave Jamaica for Ethiopia.

They believe that they are the seed of Abraham thus the use of the star of David, from Beersheba. Hali thought the Rasta’s were nut jobs and was not even Rasta himself.

You can however be a pastafarian and be white.

Like pretty well all other ethnocentric beliefs, it is mostly a matter of whether or not you can find a segment of that people who will accept you as one of their own. You don't need the consent of the entire culture, nor can you fomrulated some criteria and say,. hey, look I meet it so you HAVE to accept me. Doesn't work like that... just makes people who don't want you not want you even more.

If you can't find a place at the table amongst some segment of such a belief, you can't be one of them... even if you're black, white, or whatever the prevailing skintone is, no matter what you've studied, how you dress, the cuisine you eat, no matter. And if you can get a place at their table, your skincolour, et al. ceases to be a major factor... they'll stand by you like you were one of their own.

Yeah JMars makes a great point.

Since one of the main things is that they believe themselves to be the true Israelites, I'm not so sure how much a nonblack person can be Rastaferian; but its really loose; they dont really have leaders. But just so you know, you may come across some really blatent racism. "Going back" to Ethiopia isnt that big a thing anymore, at least that's what I heard since Salassi died.

LOL@Pastaferian
Rastraferian is a bit of joke to them too.

anticon, I never heard it was in Ethiopia either...well I guess I learn something new everyday.

Why BE anything besides yourself?

A very well kept secret in western society is that Batsheba and Solomon were black. Reading "Song of Solomon" and the civil war that happened after Solomon's death are fairly reasonable proof of this. However, even modern day Israel acknowledged this blood relationship with their support and evacuation of Ethiopians during various famines that have occurred there.

Interesting fact: coffee was first served as a beverage in Ethiopia.

That ought to wake us up.

It sounds odd at first that Jamaicans would think of themselves as a lost tribe of Israel; but the Hebrews and the Ancient Egyptians had a real intriguing relationship. The whole idea of baby Moses coming along down a stream where the Pharoah's daughter just so happensto find him sounds suspicious to me. Anyway I'd like to know more about the Israeli bloodline connection to Ethiopia. The last real African pharoah was Nectanebo II before the Arabic and Grecian pharoahs came into place, and he exiled to Ethiopia.
There's also sketchyconnections between Moses and Ahkenaten and some newevidence of King David in old Egyptian remains. Does anybody know of any reliable sources? Jewish ones.
So when you mix Jewish and Jamaican and Africa..it sounds like Reggae...incredible!

Aye new yawk, How awe ya? I was eatin mah clam chowda I got at the pizza paula down by the hawba, and gotta say that ganja don’t smell as bad as joisey or yonkuz.

If King Solomon was black, he was probably mixed; seeing that his father was David (not black) and his mother Bathsheba, whom he had an adulturous affair with; she was the wife of a hittite; and Hittites come from Ham, who were the darker ones. So lets give Solomon a tan skin.

The answer to your question OP is NO! There are blond haired blue eyed European born and bred Rastas.
You do understand that Rastafarianism started in Ethiopia and is totally different from what the Jamaicans have - right?
You do understand that you are incorrect RIGHT? The religion started with Marcus Garvey's prophecy to look towards Africa for the crowning of the king. What the Rastas believe is Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity with a MAJOR Jamaican slant on Marcus Garvey's ACL's principles.

Anyway I'd like to know more about the Israeli bloodline connection to Ethiopia
Well, it starts with Queen Makeda and King Solomon's epic romance. According to the Kebra Nagast and the Torah, King Solomon sent troops to escort the safe return of the lovely Madeda to Sheba which is part of the Ethiopian Empire. The visit of the Queen of Sheba was the culminating point of Solomon's life. After she left, he continued to write and speak words of wisdom, but he and Israel deteriorated. We might speculate that this deterioration was triggered not only by his increasing preoccupation with building a glorious palace and temple, but also by Sheba's return to her country. Never again would Solomon encounter or love a woman he could call her equal. After she left, Solomon took 700 wives and 300 concubines, many who were foreign women who eventually "turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God."IKings 10 and IKings11:3-4.While the Queen of Sheba's visit was a time of glory, it marked the beginning of the end for Solomon and all of Israel. This shows the value of the love of a good woman and the folly of letting that love pass ...holla if you feel me.

Sheba's life after Solomon was more fortunate. Upon returning home, she gave birth to a son, whom she named Ibn al-Hakim, "son of the wise man." Ethiopians believe him to be David II (the name given him by Solomon), who later called himself Menelek, and who was the first king of the Ethiopian dynasty. The Kebra Negast states that when Menelek was 12 years old, he began asking his mother about his father, and that when he was 22, he traveled to Jerusalem, bearing the ring which Solomon had given Makeda. Because Menelek's facial features, eyes, legs and gait were similar to his father's, Solomon recognized him instantly. Rejoicing in his firstborn male heir, he wanted Menelek to be his successor, but Menelek refused. This Left Solomon's son Rehoboam to suffer the consequences of his sins. (Under Rehoboam the nation splits and civil war further deteriorates the civilization of Israel. ) Although Menelek remained for a time to study the laws of the Hebrews, Menelek, like his mother, chose to return to Sheba. Solomon was deeply grieved at his departure, and also dreamed of laying with Makeda, experiencing once again the glory that they had known together. The Kebra Nagast states "there shall be no more queens in Ethiopia, but only a man." Here she is portrayed telling Solomon, "Henceforward a man who is of thy seed shall reign, and a woman shall nevermore reign; only seed of thine shall reign and his seed after him."
The Flalasha and Falasha Muir also known as Beta Isreal, believe themselves to be the descendents of the house of those escorts and have practiced Judaism for milliniums. The royal family of Ethiopia were Ahmhara, the Amhara believe themselves to be the descendents of the Makeda/Solomon union.
Whats more interesting are the Lemba and Shona of Zimbabwe/Southern Africa. A team of geneticist in 1997 discovered The presence among the Lemba of a disproportionate number of men carrying a particular polymorphism on the Y chromosome known as the Cohen modal haplotype suggests an ancestral link to the HEBREW population. One sub-clan within the Lemba, the Buba clan, is considered by the Lemba to be their priestly clan. Among the Buba, fifty-two percent of males carry the Cohen modal haplotype, which is found among Jewish Kohanim, a hereditary set of Jewish priests. The priest are different from Rabbis and perform certain ritual roles. The Lemba also have a large percentage of genes often found in non-Arab Semites. I found this from a link from Haruth Communications: "Genetic tests on the Lemba people of southern Africa show convincing evidence the Bantu-speaking tribe may be of Jewish ancestry. The Lemba, who practice circumcision, keep one day a week holy and avoid eating pork or pig-like animals, have long asserted they are of Jewish heritage. The discovery of the common DNA sequences stemmed from research being done into the Jewish tradition that priests are the descendants of Aaron, the elder brother of Moses. ``In studying the priesthood, we happened into this tool for distinguishing Jewish from non-Jewish populations.'' Unlike in other chromosomes, the genetic material of the Y chromosome remains more or less unchanged from generation to generation, making it a useful tool in discovering heritage, the newspaper reported.

The geneticist found a particular set of genetic mutations that was strongly associated with the priestly caste, not so common among lay Jews and very rare in non-Jewish populations. He then tested DNA samples collected from the Lemba.

Research showed that the proportion of Lemba men carrying the genetic signature of the priests were similar to those found among the major Jewish populations, strongly supporting the Lemba tradition of Jewish ancestry. the senior of their 12 groups. The Lemba, from South Africa and Zimbabwe, believe they were led out of Judea by a man named Buba." Buba is a part of the linguistic group of the Nuba people of Sudan. Perhaps they were led out of Ethiopia a few hundred years AFTER leaving Judah and Israel.

King Solomon falls in love with Queen Makeda. They have a son that starts the 1st JudeoChristian Dynasty in Ethiopia. The son visits his father and returns. The Hebrew tribe of Dan leaves Israel due to the civil war and issues with the other son of Solomon Rehoboam. They send scouting parties in many directions. Some reach the land of Sheba and are reunited with the Levites and Danites who escorted Queen Makeada out of Israel. Christianity comes to Ethiopia. Those who refuse to accept Yeshua Ben Yosef(real name of Jesus) and lastly fear of the wave of Islamic conquest that saw them take over Isreal, Constantinople, Egypt, Sudan, North Africa and the European Iberian peninsula(Spain, Portugal, part of France)led them to begin to leave by once again sending scouting parties south. They make their way to Zimbabwe. 500- 1,000 years later the Nuba,Falasha,Falasha Mur,Amhara and Danites who made the journey have blended into the surrounding community of Bantu to form the Lemba. Genetic evidence shows this is VERY possible. Morphologically it is OBVIOUS. Geographically it is very possible. The means was there. The oral tradition IS there. The cultural and archeological links are astounding.
In the Great Zimbabwe city some walls were ten metres(32ft) high ! Many incorporated chevron, herringbone or chequered patterns. A set of steps leading into the main "temple" constitutes a true work of art: each course curves out of the flanking walls into the entrance, with the penetration of the curves increasing as the steps are ascended. They were skilled water engineers, constructing dams feeding conduits and irrigation channels. Regularly spaced terraces, which can still be viewed today, were carved into hills in the northeast of Zimbabwe They had ancient gold mines also that required a measure of engineering skill, containing horizontal as well as deep vertical shafts. Furnaces, crucibles and tools found at various sites indicate that the gold ornaments and jewellery accompanying them, were produced LOCALLY. Stone spindle whorls found at Great Zimbabwe indicate that cotton was spun and woven with great sophistication there. Cotton is thought not indigenous to southern Africa, but a few (now wild) cotton trees nevertheless seem to have been planted near that ancient city. Thus, it is relevant to note that Lemba men used to wear a long cotton garment, similar to those found on the East African coast. Carbon14 dating system places this city at about 600AD.

The Rusape Jews believe that their local Shona tradition and culture comes from the same ancient Hebrew community, and that their ancestors brought Judaism from the Promised Land southward over a thousand year trek along the eastern coast of Africa. To the Rusape community, there is little difference between ancient African observance and ancient Jewish culture. Today they struggle to live both to the fullest.

Biblical and Torah prophecy was that the ancient Hebrews would be scattered among the nations(Ezekiel 11).
