Just because I am feeling mawkish and maudlin and sulky because I have to spend xmas 2000km from the rest of my family...

What's you favorite Xmas tune (yes, Dreidle Dreidle counts as does the 12 beers of christmas)?

Mine would be the Cat's Carol. Can't remember the singer. Makes me turn hysterical at the opening chords, no mean feat for a girl who has a reputation for being tough. My kids put it on because they think it is funny to watch me fall apart (but really, they like it too). They also like to make me read "The Christmas Present" because I can't even make it through the first three pages.

So, do tell? What makes you feel the season?

I have one piece that really gets me in the mood, and that's Hansel's Messiah. Yeah, I know it sounds pretentious, and it's long and some of the solo parts are a little too baroque, but when I can put aside the two-and-a-half hours to listen to it from start to finish, the Hallelujah Chorus and and the final choral piece reduce me to blubbering mush.
I've seen it live here at the Cohn three times and each time it was spectacular. Now I just need to put aside the necessary time, turn off the phone, and park myself in my chair and soak it in.

My father was a singer, so we got a lot of Handel.
I used to think the "Oh we like sheep have gone astray" was a bunch of people singing "oh we like sheep..." and thought it was very funny.

Good King Wenceslas.

There was a TV cartoon in the mid 70's that came on every year called The Christmas Messenger. It was three short cartoons of christmas carols and I always really liked this one.

Pretty much a fan of most of the "classic" carols, I guess.

There's a lot in it that I thought odd and funny when I was a kid. I think the cadences tend to throw a person off what they are trying to communicate.

I made the time to listen to it. It's playing as I type this.

This topic made me reach for my old LP back that is always on as we decorate the Christmas tree and listen to it during this special time of the year (among the others). As the censorship was in place and as strong as ever, I have to say that the admirable voice of that time #1 singer Karel Gott brought to life Christmas music penned by Handel, Gruber, Schubert, Bizet etc ... and since it been recorded in Tyn Cathedral from Old Town square in Prague in 1973 the whole production fills the house with its magical touch to this festive season.

Usually my favorite Christmas Carol is the first one I hear that season. This year it is the one that was sent to me, and brought the melody to my mind.

I Heard The Bells.

My favorite Christmas Card/Wish is given it's honor the same way, it's always the first of the season, for that year. To which I once again say Thank You, and it will be thought about all through the season.

p.s. (I know the person that sent it will read this, and now know it is so special to me. To whom I also wish a Wonderful Christmas, and a Get Happy New Year)

My favourite Christmas carol is Feliz Navidad. It always puts me in the mood for Christmas.

This reminds me, it is about that time to torture my family and break out the Christmas carol songsheets!

It would be nice if someone started a Christmas Carol thread, which we could put the words to all our favorite Carols. Some (including me) would love to have all the words to some of the songs.

Just a thought. If they are put in one of the Global Threads they could be more noticed and maybe we could learn some from different countries.

Welcome

I really can't stand Christmas music. It makes me cringe. One song that I think is
really incredible though is Christmas (baby please come home). It's an R&B Christmas tune that Darlene Love sings every year on Letterman. She has an awesome voice. So I guess I like one Christmas song.

Hi Folks,

I like Sarah Mclachlan's version of Lennons Happy Christmas from her new album Wintersong. This is a very nice album.
Bette Midlers new cd is also quite nice.
Other notables this year are ; Il Divo's collection, James Taylor also has a new cd out this month and Celtic Woman celebration cd are very good.

Has anyone heard of the Mistletones ? They had 2-3 great Lp's back in the 80's. Anyone know what famous tenor has gone solo from this group and hit it big ?

Another favouite of mine is Amy Grant- her voice on many christmas tunes will certainly put you in the festive spirit.

I love the traditional Christmas carols - the modern Christmas songs make me mushy, such as "All I Want For Christmas Is You" . . . "I'll Be Home For Christmas" makes me cry. So I try not to listen to Christmas "songs". But . . . I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Mannheim Streamroller's "A Fresh Aire Christmas" (1988) all instrumental - no to mlyrics that make me melancholy.

But the song I HATE more than anything? Little Drummer Boy. Pa-rum-pa-freaking-pum.

Cant' stand most Xmas music... drives me bonkers. Yes, I worked in a shopping mall around Xmas once... and yes, that's affected how I feel about it.
