I do have a real question and would really appreciate some help if anyone can do so.

Early on I was experimenting with a few different music players available in the synaptic packages manager since XMMS was freezin up from time to time (the music is ALWAYS on here at the casa:>). Anyway, I tried AmaRok which is a really killer system & futsin around with it, broke it like a MoFo !

At the time I just said screw it & kept tryin some others & then a patch they did for XMMS stopped the lockups so I've gone back to it, but would really like to switch back to AmaRok because of all the cool features. A buddy of mine says it's even better since a few upgrades & not so hoggish with the resources as it used to be now too, so I'd like to try it again.

Here's the rub though ....... I went back into synaptic pkgs mgr & did a "complete uninstall" on it to start over, then reloaded it all to start over, but it now gives me an error message sayin "xine was unable to initialize any audio drivers" and another pop up screen that says "could not launch the email client. KDEInit could not launch 'thunderbird'. Could not find 'thunderbird' executeable" , then when I click the OK buttons it just closes AmaRok.

I'd like to run AmaRok, anyone have any ideas ?

"xine was unable to initialize any audio drivers"

has to be a config file some place that tells amarok what sound drivers to use.
does your sound work anywhere?

"could not launch the email client. KDEInit could not launch 'thunderbird'. Could not find 'thunderbird' executeable"

sounds like a symbolic link problem..have to edit the config file to piont to the executable for this probably. see if there is a config for KDEinit and see if it pointd to thunderbird.
must have decent documentation read through it..should tell you where the files are,.....maybe

I'm just guessing ...but

rfc pilot..
.gentoo, is that the one you have to compile from source and gives you a really fast system tailored to your hardware?

Yeah I have sound, in XMMS, videos, etc .

But, as a total novice I have no clue how to :

"edit the config file to point to the executable for this probably. see if there is a config for KDEinit and see if it pointd to thunderbird.
must have decent documentation read through it..should tell you where the files are,.....maybe"

But ... I guess I could try readin the KDE handbook and see if anything looks like something I can make sense of. If it comes to command line fixes I can handle it so long as I have the commands spoon fed so I can just C&P 'em, otherwise I'm totally lost there.

best bet maybe for the thunderbird issue is to find a tar.gz for it and compile it manually

have you tried deleting your .amarok folder and starting over? If it died when you were futzing with things - I've read in another of your posts that you don't do much as root, It could be isolated there.

Plentyofrick, pretty much. Its nice and fast. I didnt add in KDE or Gnome to it so its not quite as functional as other distros for the moment, but its been nice to me. Also, the Portage tree is brilliant, especially when compared to RPMs or to Fedora Core's Yum package manager.

Wrenchspinner,

Reading the KDE handbook probably won't help you with this one.

One of the applications Amarok depends on is xine, which appears to be where you're getting your error message from.

You can try using Synaptic to do a complete remove and re-installation of xine, to see if that clears your problem.

Of course, before you make any changes to your system you'd be well advised to make a backup, just in case you break things.

Hope this helps.

:-))

Edit: I've just found this post on an Ubuntu forum which may help:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=102064

I would try this before my suggestion above, as it's easier to undo.

Just a tip, and I'm not trying to be nasty by suggesting this, but if you ever get an error message and can't work out what it's telling you if you google for it you'll probably find others who have the same issue, and if you're lucky the fix for it as well.

You can check the Wine releases. But I seriously doubt they are supported. If you run VMware and have enough resources you should be able to run just about anything you want. Short of rendering 3D or etc.

Dreamweaver is an MM product, so I seriously doubt it's in their scopes for Linux.

And here lies one of the main issues that was brought up in the Vista thread. If you rely on a commercial product for Linux and they don't support linux, you're stuck with what they support. Scream has been around for a long time and aimed at being the Linux dreamweaver, but I haven't played with it in over 5 years. Can't help there, sorry.

'Course you can always partition your drive and run a dual boot system or just get another drive, install it and load Linux onto it instead too. Then you'll have all the best of both worlds at your fingertips !

HDs are gettin so cheap these days ! I picked up a 300gig 2 months ago for $59 at Fryes :>)

yeh I run dual boot most of the time.

Hey seen the latest mandrake...3D desktop, you know like ms said they were going to do but couldn't. it looks like a cube with a desktop on each side. only seen screen shots but i'm dl'n mandriva 2007 powerpack as i type this.

usually linux has programs that are as good or better then windows based ones, take the gimp for example. oh you can get adobe acrobat ported to linux maybe you can also get other adobe products.
