| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 12/16/2006 5:10:47 PM | Today, my almost-sister-in-law came home complaining because some guys at the street wolf-whistled her from afar. Her mom (my future mother-in-law, if everything goes well) laughed it off, saying that when she reaches her age, she will miss those.
Perhaps it's a cultural thing, so my question is: Ladies, what do you prefer: unwanted attention (nothing offensive or brash, just an inspired "piropo" or a whistle) or no attention at all?

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 12/16/2006 5:17:51 PM | A whistle is cool and will make me smile while I think to myself, "Yeah! I still got it!" .
Hissing, car horns, smooching noises and "hey baby!'s" will just get the giver a dirty look or a one-finger wave.

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 12/16/2006 5:55:03 PM | Are you kidding? Especially when we get older....if there is a man who has the nerve to give a cat call....or even go out of his way to notice us....that is the epitomy of flattery! No harm done with that harmless attention....I think we should all be allowed that moment of flattery! | |

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 12/16/2006 6:35:33 PM | I will be 49 next month.
If a fella wants to wolf-whistle at me then I would likely giggle inside with excitement.
Alas, it rarely happens, despite hanging around constructions sites (kidding).

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 12/16/2006 6:35:41 PM | It doesn't bother me at all if a guy whistles or does a double-take. As long as it's nothing horribly gross, I kinda like it and just take it as flattery. Somewhere in my little demented mind it makes me think I still got it goin on...... | |

Posted: 12/16/2006 8:01:25 PM | | To a certain extent who doesnt want to be whistled or cat called, providing that it's not abrasive or out right offensive. It's a confident boost for sure. Although there does come a point when it's annoying. You just want ppl to leave u the f*ck alone and let you get on with whatever it is your doing. But yeah for sure, a whistle or a turn around look is quite flattering.

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 12/16/2006 8:25:24 PM | Discreet attention is the best kind. Oddly, it seems to me that those "cat call" type of people do it to draw attention to their own self more than the woman they are oogling. I can live without that. JMO | |

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 12/17/2006 5:58:12 AM | I was watching America's Next Top Model the other day. Tyra tells the girls they are all going to Milan. She tells the girls that its different from America. The men in Milan will make you feel gorgeous, because they are always whistling and saying ciao bella! come here! Where guys in america are being conditioned to walk eyes down, don't look at a female for risk of being sued. Can't even look at a woman anymore, MUCH LESS indicate you think she is attractive. yikes, just asking to go to jail.
Pretty sad. Thanks, Gloria. Its why a woman who spends 2 hours dressing up won't get any more of a glance than someone who leaves the house in sweats. not allowed to appreciate anything anymore.

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 1/5/2007 7:30:57 PM | | It's a compliment, as long as he intends it as such, in good nature, and no gross hand gestures or anything goes along with it (whistle -"You know how to whistle, don't you? Just put your lips together and blow...") | |
|
| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 1/5/2007 8:37:17 PM | Guys whistling...calling out of their moving cars at you and honking...I love that stuff!!! Of course it totally depends on the situation and neighbourhood.
Now, when they actually start following you around, and harrassing you, that gets annoying/borderline scary.

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 1/5/2007 8:47:43 PM | I'd love to know how she knew the wolf-whistle was for her...
She was the only female on the street?
I've always been told the time to worry is when the guys stop whistling.

I prefer attention. | |

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 1/5/2007 9:57:15 PM | WakeDan obviously you don't go to clubs, because men do more than whistle there, they will come up behind you, grind all over you, try and kiss you, grab your ass, etc and think it's perfectly fine, because they're in a club, and you're dancing you must want that kind of attention....I hate when they come up from out of no where and sling their arm around me like i know them
so compared to all that, a whistle is nothing...

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 1/5/2007 9:59:16 PM | and yeah they are usually the yucky guys...and many are truckers....
and the worst thing of all is when they stick their tongue out at you and wiggle it around like they're performing oral sex...
do men honestly think women find this attractive?

How do you know all this in so much detail.
I can honestly say, even 25+ years ago, if I heard a whistle, or any type of derogatory comment, I would have automatically presumed it was aimed in another direction.
To even consider stopping to watch as they
stick their tongue out at you and wiggle it around would defy belief.
And as you consider many are "truckers" - doesn't that mean they're driving past as this happens - or do you have to run to keep up?

It's based off of an SNL skit - I've personally never had that happen to me - I don't know whether to feel happy or insulted....... (love you!) Gotta love that whistle! - Been felt on the bum before by strangers - HATE THAT!

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 1/6/2007 12:13:10 AM | | OP - I love it when a guy checks me out, whistles, or makes some snarky comment. I get so flattered, and it really boosts my confidence because some stranger liked what he saw. It does get to be too much when they sart using durogotory terms, however... | |

| Unwanted attention...or no attention at all? Posted: 1/6/2007 3:10:54 AM | | Well I'd rather a whistle than a moooo, unfortunately I have gotten a moooo more in my life than a whistle. As long as its not rude I wouldn't mind the attention its fun and flattering and harmless. The mooooo's are just rude and immature and not needed. | |
