| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 12:37:56 PM | After hearing alot of people unhappy about Kabanas I am just throwing this out there as to who would want to try a different venue for karaoke. There are a number of places around town that hold karaoke on wed nights and obviously can't please everyone with what quadrant we go to and anyone is free to organize one close to there area as for me I live in the South so three spots that come to mind on wed nights are the bent elbow, rat and parrot and ducky's. So i am just throming this out there to gauge interest of people trying a different establishment and the preferance of choice.

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:03:00 PM | | I have been to Duckys and I liked it there. I went on a weekend and found it very busy, but during the week it could be good. | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:05:52 PM | | Man I finally find this Kabbannas place and then they going to change it. To bad you have to meet weeknights for us that work and have to drive. | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:10:00 PM | Ducky's is great, I've been there before and it's sort of central......... | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:11:19 PM | Both the Bent Elbow and Rat and Parrot are in Canyon Meadows which is really far for us NWers to travel. Ducky's, although still in the SW, is much more central.
I've been to Ducky's as well and it was a blast, but agree with SS that it is really busy on weekends. But they also have karaoke every night of the week so we would not be restricted to a particular night.

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:15:38 PM | even if there is a new venue it will be the same ole same ole we can not please everyone
me i still like kabana's only because of it's the only bar where it is just pof'rs and all we have to do is just chat to the management and get things straight and give our comments and listen to his. it can be worked out.
me i am there for the friends and like meeting new friends, so i will be anywhere we all go it's not the staff or deals that i go for it's everyone i have met and not met
just like the issues at juliets we had before kabana's it is proven there isn't a bar that will cater to each and everyone of our needs. why run to different venues each time we don't get our way and instead work things out but if ya want to share a bar with others then i suggest finding another bar that will kiss our asses because we are a large group. "like come-on now" i know we all have our opinions and can say and do what we think but look at the end result we are there from POF and want to meet new people and be together in a group.
i am not praising kabana's i like it only because it is just us from POF and if there is issues lets work it out......... JMHO!!!

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:23:49 PM | ^^You're very right Shawn, I havedn't been to Kabanas before, for me it's just past issues with good old Delroy, but I'm willing to go out there again!
I did have a great time. Maybe because it was a Christmas party for a good cause, people felt a bit upset, after all we are trying to do good things for the community....it just seemed unfair from the vantage point of some of the regulras of Wed night karaoke.

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:24:41 PM | | I agree with you to an extent shawn can't please everyone and yes i'm there for the people and friends I meet as well and but all said and done it does come down to service and the way your treated and alot of people are unhappy with the service, we probably won't find an establishment that caters to our every whim but why stick to just one place there are others out there and I for one am willing to try something new if thats the consensus of most people. | |

I feel that some business practices don't deserve a second chance and renaging on a deal they had to pay for half the DJ and then short him is not OK.
To continue going there it says we don't care how our fellow POFer was treated for his service.
I don't like the fact that I buy the same thing everytime, but my bill is more and more everytime.
To continue going to an estblishment with shady business practices shows them we don't care how we are treated. I'm sorry, but I do care.
Can someone tell me why we are usually the only people in the place???
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:33:26 PM | | it's not the place, it's the people. "SHOULD WE STAY OR SHOULD WE GO" as the song goes. let's vote..... majority rules. | |

maybe its in the industrial area and he never even carried 1/2 the drinks he does now....he brought in coolers in and special beer for those who asked

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:39:14 PM | Regardless of location..if it was so great word of mouth would get out and there would be others besides POF and the few stragglers they bring in.
This word of mouth brought to us via Seymour says everything for me:
OK here goes again. I suspect this rant will be much shorter than the one I did before.
I am very pissed off at this hell hole and the management and I have no intention of ever going back to it again. I think the management of that place has acted in a very deceptive and unethical manner and I really question their business practices on every level.
I have gone to this place for approximately two months and last week I had every intention of not going there again, except that I had planned to attend last night event because of what they did then, which bears an eerily similar resemblance to what happened last night.
To set it up, last week there was supposed to be a party with a kissing contest with a cash prize of $500. I would have won that contest if it actually happened, trust me on this. Regardless, I got in the door and the advertising clearly did not state there would be a cover charge. It is not the amount, it is a trivial amount, it is all about the principle. I asked why there was a cover, and I was informed that they had to scramble to get a DJ at the last minute. Things like that happen but they would have paid for a DJ regardless, and unless they stated a cover charge was to be in effect in their advertising, I take this to be false advertising pure and simple.
OK, so last night, I have the same thing happen, and my initial response was WTF!!! Are these guys serious. If it was not for POFers, the doors would not be open for long because of the amount of clients they have outside of POFers. So I am pissed off as soon as I walk in the door. Granted I never read the forums to find out this was a last minute development planned by the manager of this dump without the organizers knowledge (so I will accept responsibility for not reading the forums first, but that is neither here nor there).
So I go to the bar and I find out they have no change for drinks, Fine, it happens and I would have given a tip. I find out the beers are $4.75 and since I did not have anything smaller than a $10 I guess that is their tip. Later after getting change from the nice young cashier (Nicole) at the end of the night, and with whom I have been dealing with all evening, the price went down to $3.75 a beer. I think to myself I wonder why that is then I realize the other person behind the bar is not there.
I know there was mention above of half hour waits for service at the bar. I could see that happening. But it makes me wonder if the management knew that there was going to be a large crowd, why was there not the appropriate amount of servers hired. They certainly had sufficient time to find one or two people to help out for the night. Why risk getting patrons pissed off because the service is so poor, that is just good business management.
What really got under my craw is: 1.) Why if we gave out over 100 tickets at the door (and I am certain there were a few people missed because if it was not for Kerri we would have been one of them too). So we have 100 tickets given out at the door in exchange for a $5.00 cover. At the bare minimum that is $500. Why was there only $395 collected. Ummmmmmm... I might not be overly bright, but 100 x $5.00 equals $500 or the cost of the DJ. Why was he stiffed by management? Are they really that mentally challenged to not think word would get out, that at least $105 went somewhere else than where it should have gone.
2.) Why were drinks sold for significantly more than the posted happy hour prices. Why also was there no change available for patrons. I am sure management could make up the missing $105 from that alone.
3.) Why was there no appetizers available when it was promised there would be some. However at the end of the night when the lights were turned up why could I smell garlic, or something like garlic prawns.
4.) If this place has apparantly very few clients outside of POFers, why are we treated with such distain and a cavalier attitude.
I had a lot more to say but unfortunately it was all lost. If you want to hear my rant in person I am sure I would be happy to oblige at any other venue that this hell hole, which I have no intention of ever darkening their doorway again.
I vote to move.... | |

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 1:48:48 PM | | Wow....Maybe POF events should go somewhere else,I will still attend wednesday Karaoke at Kabanas only because the karaoke host is awesome.I guess after people stop showing up there won't be karaoke at Kabanas at all. | |

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 2:05:58 PM | I vote for going somewhere else. Hopefully on the C-train route.
I agree with Seymour on all points.

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 2:12:25 PM | Playing Devil's advocate. This posting sounds strangely familiar to the one that was going on about Juliets awhile back.
Is it a possiblity that it is something that POFers are doing that is causing bad service?
Don't shoot me, just asking......

I completely agree with SexyScorp here... and then some.
An establishment with such a small clientele to begin with should be a tad more appreciative and cooperative when a regular group such as PoF frequents their establishment!!!
Their don't deserve the business if they make a deal regarding such a big event as the Christmas Party and then last minute turn around and start making demands, accusations and threats!!!
After everything that's happened why would we want to give this bar any more of our business???
It's not a matter of pleasing everyone... it's a matter of how our group is treated on a whole!
I VOTE WE MOVE
Someone was mentioning Sambuca's in Forest Lawn. I heard of $2 drinks on Wed... and that they are planning on bringing in Karaoke in the new year... Would be great to get Katherine (Karaoke girl) on board with this. She's the only good thing about Kabana's if you ask me!!!
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 2:18:07 PM | Not that I personally have attended one of your Karaoke nights, but noticed that Sambuca's was mentioned here. Just a head's up for you wonderful peeps...my sis in law used to work there and i know that 3/4 of the staff left when the bar changed ownership due to the sketchy activity going on in there most nights.... Maybe check it out in person before you all show up there en masse....wouldn't wanna see any of you on the news afterall If anyone wants clarification on "sketchy activity" PM me. | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 2:19:15 PM | me i think we should disguss the issues instead of running to different venues i know with juliets i find it filthy and affraid to use the the bathroom i'm not sure about the womens b-room though
like chris said it is the karaoke host and the friends i goto kabana's for and that the bar is empty unless we are there and thats all i like about the place .........management i can do with out
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 2:26:26 PM | Ducky's works. I too am not impressed with Kabanas. (I bought my 1st pop at $1.25 and the next one was $3.00. The service was very very slow....).
My usual karaoke haunt (outside of wednesdays) is at the Border Crossing. They go 7 days a week from 9 till 2 AM.
My wednesday Karaoke hang out is not happening due to funds and the KJ is looking for a new venue to do her shows. It was in a private club and it was a blast - sadly we didn't get enough people coming out to it.
I'll keep my eyes and ears open for a neat place to go.........What happened to karaoke at Juliets castle?

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 2:34:19 PM | On behalf of Party Central
Ker~Bear says she votes for this to be moved and she'll be very disappointed if any PoF members gives that establishment any more of our dollars due to the shadiness of the establishment and that she was blindsided. She'll elaborate more when she can post herself in a day or so
She did this party last year without one single hitch and was happy to do it. This year nothing but headache.
She chose Kabanas but she never expected these things to go down at the last minute with NO notice and with no other options available. And the problems just kept on coming. If anyone would like to discuss this please email Ker~Bear.
In the end like any business, Kabanas has made the mistake of being greedy and taking advantage of patronage and it will cost them. Come Wednesday for NOT one single person showing up... it will be apparent to Delroy that this was a big business mistake.
She thinks we should move this along... and if anyone is unaware of WHY we should move the weekly Karaoke... please email Ker~Bear or myself.
OE - We should give the Bent Elbow a shot - Ker~Bear knows the host

|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 12/17/2006 2:56:59 PM | I know you like the place Shawn, but to continue going there just promotes and encourages the bad practices of Delroy.
Its not telling him a thing if we continue to patronize the place. It says is OK to rip of the DJ that you all said was great and to pay all sorts of prices depending on who is serving you.
He sets up a kissing contest(and Seymour...we would have attempted to give you a run for your money) that they failed to do even though it was on the cards that were on the tables the evening of Tinks B~day...the actual event. Falsely advertise to get people there and then no follow through?
How do you think talking to him will clear it up?
Threats and accusations Cndngirl? I am curious to hear what they were?
I think we should try a few other places. I like Border Crossing. I like Duckys. Bent Elbow sounds good.
No, everyone is not always going to be happy, but this seems like a lot more than just one or two people. For everyone voicing their opinions there are more that are not.
