| Would you rather be 'right' or be 'happy'? Posted: 12/18/2006 6:54:26 AM | Stole this from a post from *Tee*,(thankyou *Tee*) made me stop and think. It's actually a quote from Dr Phil, and it has me pondering.......So what's the answer???

I wouldn't allow someone to make me a door mat, but I will sit and reason with someone or be reasoned with to settle something. At the end of the day, I want to be happy.

Just a note (I need to be right!) that although Dr. Phil has used it, the "Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy" question pre-dates Dr. Phil.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me. Elwood P. Dowd

One downside is, give it up too often (being right that is), and you end up, as previously stated, a doormat. I startede letting little points go rather then arguing, and looky looky, I'm now single because I got tired of conceiding the point.

Who wants to be right all the time, and more importantly who wants be BE with someone who is right all the time. Being right is different for everyone. What I think is right may not be what someone else thinks is right. So compromise to be right, then your HAPPY.

Depending on what it is I'm supposed to be right about, I usually prefer to let him think he's right, yet all the while moving things in a certain direction.

Certainly it wasn't what I was really implying at all. I always like win/win situations and work for this to be the end result. It has proven to be successful most of the time. Really, the question from the OP or I should say Dr. Phil, leaves no room for compromise. I don’t spend too much time reading Dr. Phil :)

Emotions always change, but opinions do not necessarily always change. I personally would rather be secure in the knowledge that I am correct than happy, because sooner or later, I *will* be happy if I just wait. Being 'right' won't happen without my effort, thus making it rewarding enough to pursue even at the expense of my enjoyment.
