Christmas - the season of BADwill?

Apparently, the police in the UK are bracing themselves for 'Black Friday'. This is the last working day, for most people, before Christmas and is the worst night of the year for people drinking far too much and then fighting in, and outside, the pubs, clubs, etc.

Christmas time is also, statistically, the time of year when most suicides are attempted and the worst time for family arguments.

After weeks of making travel arrangements, food-shopping and buying presents for loved ones, why do people do this?

Blame it on the stress that is a retail christmas instead of the season of goodwill perhaps we should all consider getting back to our traditional roots and remember what this time of year is really about. By that statement I don't mean you have to be christian and rush off to church, this time of year has been celebrated long before that even as a Pagan festival.

Mad Friday we call it up here, when everyone finishes work and goes out on the drink..

Not everyone ends up fighting, but you find some may get agitated more easily the more alcahol they consume..And can take offence at the most minor thing..Or say what they havent the nerve to say to someone when sober..

Suicides, I guess they are more the people who havent any family etc, although thats just a guess.

And Christmas is usually a stressful time for familys financially and can cause arguments..

This year I am behind the bar, I have my family and no arguments over finaces as I am on my own..Sorted..

People kill thereselves as it a time of year for guilt tripping and family feuds etc etc also more murders, there have been 2 murders in preston in the last month and I reckon its due to increased drinking and increased strains, I feel and understand why it can make people low and it's a time when you see less people 10 years ago on christmas year, my friend put his head on a railway line and was decapitated, we all know he was having a hard time due to being laid off work and we helped where we could but he never let on once this was what he was thinking and its something i will never come to terms with and wish I cud or had of done more, for some people who have no one or dont want to talk to anyone it can make you feel incrediably lonely and as if no one would miss you if your where gone!!

tis is exactly what christmas is, the season of badwill, always has been, always will be.

you see, it`s thrust upon us, we are expected to join in whether we choose to or not.

it`s not the same with birthdays, you get to choose whether you want a fuss or not,no one can say "you`ve spoilt my birthday" and others are happy to do your bidding.

also, it`s easier to shut yourself away, christmas you are expected to join in irrespective, giving you no choice in the matter, people in the main, like a choice.

Last working day probs - due to a lot of people finishing work earlier than usual, and rather than going home before going out for the Friday night, they stay out for the duration. And the stress (maybe) of knowing they have to spend the next few days with partners or family that they would rather not be with.

Suicides - this time of year can really rub into people that they don't have a Walton-like family, if they have a family at all, and it's a time when there are certain expectations - albeit unrealistic ones. People can really convince themselves that they are one of the few sad ones in life without a great family life, rather than remembering that many people do the family Christmas out of duty or something similar.

Family arguments - too high expectations, too much time together - answer? have a barney!

Terrorism is 90% Verbal and 10% physical. Most of the time its just paranoia. I wouldnt worry about it too much or you would never set foot out of your house :(

Christmas can be for those alone,a dreadful time! I can understand how suicides rise this time of year. Some people have no children, family and everywhere shuts up and they feel even more isolated.

Families who have nothing to do with each other the rest of the year, are all expected to get together at Christmas and then there is that huge build up to it all and then whoosh nothing! So families argue.

The worst night of the year for fighting, well I would imagine that is because more people are out that night ( apart from New years eve) than any other night of the year!

Just my 2ps worth

Cheers for telling us this....

I'll be off to the shop in the morning to get a bullet proof vest, and an amoured car! Should see me through till new year!!!

I used to live in Ireland and they do St Stephens day on the 26th..... That ws the worst day for fighting ever... The pubs close early on Xmas Eve and re open Stephens day... You would think they hadn't had a drink for a month!

Best bit of it all... it was normally some family fighting!

It doesn't surprise me. I'm out Friday night. Like a lot of people it's like thank fooke, i get some time off work, and Friday night will be the start of my wind down.

Although i don't intend to get too wrecked

I can understand about the suicide attempts too. There is too much hype to do with Xmas. Money being the biggest problem. Then if you haven't got a lot of family or anyone at all to spend time with, over this period where everyone is suppose to be together and happy.
Then it can be depressing if you haven't got that.

I have really toned Xmas down this year, i think it's all bullshit anyway.

I see my family and friends all year round. My son gets treats/gifts throughout the year.

What is so special about Xmas anyway?
