Health suppliments? [Locked - Redundant]

I would really like to know what health suppliments people are taking these days and which ones you feel have provided the most benefit. Personally I take B vits, Fish oil, Siberian Ginseng and Reishi mushroom. Fish oil seems to make me feel happier.

So, what about you?

i take only supplements that my company manufactures. i trust them and i know exactly what's in them and how much active component.

i take goldenseal, propolis, acidophilus, ester c, a stress formula, L5HTP, our womens' formula, our appetite suppresant formula and our arthritis formula. from time to time, i'll add something else, but i take these daily to prevent sinus problems and stress-related headaches etc.

with so much misinformation out there, it helps to get the inside scoop from trade journals and my own experiences.

you're on the right track.......vit c, d,e, selenium.......green drinks are nutritional.....whey and soy isolates......i try to eat some shittake mushrooms(perhaps same or similar properties as reishi)........all vitamins should be natural as opposed to synthetic.....if you're open and ready to take your personal health a step further, detox and cleanses are beneficial......just go to your local health food store

Most people just shove supplements down their throats without any consideration to whether they are helpful or not. They will read something, see an ad and then buy it. They don't even do the research on what amount to take, or worse, buy some product that contains non-useful tiny amounts of several supplements. There are many companies that sell good products some of the ones I use are Now Products, Source Naturals, Solary, Pure Encapsulations, Planetary Formulas, Kirkland, TruNature, Country Life.

I use a clinical nutritionist who looks at my overall health, and on that basis recommends supplements. The supplements I take as a 53 year old woman are not the same ones you should be taking as a 24 year old man.

On that basis, I'll tell you what I take, and why:

2 g omega-3 fatty acids (antioxidant, cardiovascular health)
600 mg ginseng (energy, antioxidant, possible anticancer)
2 g curcumin (anticancer)
1 high potency multivitamin
150 mg COQ10 (antioxidant, antiaging, enhance physical energy)
200 mg SAM-e (depression)
600 mg alpha-lipoic acid (glucose tolerance)
5 mg biotin (maintains blood sugar levels, strengthens hair and nails)

Re post above. Watch out for high dose vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D is fat soluble and over long periods can be toxic. My nutritionist found that some of her clients taking high dose supplements had very high 25OHD values after 3 years. You don't find this in the literature, because no one has tested over the long term. If you are going to take high dose vitamin D, periodic testing for active D levels is critical.

I am not sure why you would need to "detox" yourself. If you are eating toxic things like hydrogenated acids (transfats) those just stick to your arteries anyway, and increase your risk of cancer and heart disease. No amount of "cleansing" will get rid of them.

it's smart to research any new product you're consuming.......i wouldn't take any more than 400mgs of d daily......although, that is far below the 'safe' level......multivitamins have little value, as the units are so low of any particular mineral/vitamin......again....research research before you begin! there are so many of these things on the market, you want to be sure you're getting the best health benefits and not wasting your money.....as far as detox/cleanses....they are highly beneficial.....i do them on a monthly basis....it's not only about the foods that go through your body, but the toxins that are everywhere....the things we touch and breathe......honestly, with all the lifestyle changes that i've incorporated into my life over the past 16yrs, i feel better and more vibrant than i did in my 20's..."as God would have it".........i have low blood sugar 5.....low cholesteral....good b12 levels.....good iron.....low b/p.....and an overall feeling of wellbeing.....your whole food diet is most important.....you can reap many benefits.....raw broccoli for instance, everyday will strengthen your nails, along with many many other health benefits....it's one of the many 'super' foods.

you can rid yourself of the harmful fats that go through your body by eating high fibre foods..4gms+...esp fresh ground flax....the sticky substance sticks to 'bad' fats and carries it out of your system......do research, no offence, but you're truly missing out.

My 3 top goodies :

A high quality potent multi vitamin/mineral supplement.

Omegas preferably 3's. I dont do flax as I dont want to worry about whether my body is converting it all the way or not. Fish oils get it done.

Antioxidants and Green foods. Vit C . Coenzyme 10. alpha lipoic acid. Spirulina ( GLA). Chlorella. Kelp.

i almost forgot cayenne!!!! what a great herb ~ lots of vitamin c, immune-boosting properties and, best of all it increases circulation to help you stay warm. i also break open a capsule and sprinkle it in my boots.

btw, siberian ginseng now goes by 'eleuthero.' eleutherococcus senticosus is the latin name. it's not in the ginseng family, although it has a slight resemblance to the panax. it also has some ginseng-like properties. we're not even allowed to call it 'siberian ginseng' anymore.

^^^^ (wildcat) Show me your studies on the benefits of "detoxification". Regular multivitamins are of little value. High dose that exceed the RDA on vitamins and minerals are. You would be eating an awful lot of raw broccoli to see a difference in your nails, but I guess it's possible, lol.

Fiber can help to lower cholesterol, but transfat forms a bond with arteries, a kind of plaque that is very hard to get rid of without an angioplasty or by bypassing it. If you just look at the chemical structure of transfat, you can see how it is easier for it to stick. The artificial change in the chemical bonds straightens it out. You don't even have to go into a medical journal or text. There's a picture right in Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_fat

I agree with bolotype. Stay away from flax unless you're a vegetarian. Most Western diets already have a high omega-6 to omega-3 ratio and you need the extra omega-3's to even it out. (flaxseed contains both).

BTW, I'm a medical writer/publisher. Been at this for 10 years. I write about metabolic disease, gene targeting and drug development.

Oops, I was starting to write something else and forgot to take it out! Dietary source of omega-6 are monunsaturated oils (sunflower, safflower, corn, grapeseed, soybean and cottonseed oils) and whole foods such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame tahini, tofu, and wheat germ. The ratio in the diet of omega-6 to omega-3 should be around 2:1 to 4:1, but it is 10:1 in the US diet. That's why you should only supplement with omega-3.

Sorry for the brain fart!

alex.....interesting that you've written about health yet are not aware of the benefits of a detox/cleanse........anyone can write about whatever they choose, however, it's about thorough research, what's learned and applied, as well as the results produced...i recommend readings from 'sam graci' and 'depak chopra.....very good resources...also interesting that you seem to have some knowledge in antioxidants but not detox....ummmm

^^^^ These are people, not references. As far as I'm aware there are no scientific studies showing medical benefits to "detox/cleansing". Readings from charismatic "gurus" do not provide scientific evidence that something works.

On the other hand, there are many, many studies conducted in controlled environments demonstrating the benefits of antioxidants. I have hundreds of scientific references for each supplement listed above (part of a much larger database of supplements, gene targets and investigational compounds we maintain for our subscribers). We also write our own review articles for each compound in our database.

I guess in your world that qualifies as "some knowledge", lol.

BTW, FWIW I am 11 years older than you are, all my blood chemistry values are normal and always have been normal. My body fat is 20 percent, and most people think I look a lot younger than I am. The picture in my profile is 6 months old, unflattering, taken with no makeup (I don't wear it). I just pointed the camera to my face and shot, lol. No body shot because I have a boyfriend, but I'd be happy to send you one.

I've never detoxed or cleansed anything in my life and I have the energy of a 20 year old.

flax, glutamine, fish oil, multivitamins, milk thistle, vitamin b12 (injectible), and protein as far as legal supplements go...

HGH is my favourite supplement ever, but should only be used with great care and education.

Carlson's finest fish oil lemon liquid supplement(1-2 tsp a day that is at least 4g)

Green's + veggie supplement.

Whey protein(optimum nutrition): Mainly after workouts with some high gi carb for insulin spike to get faster recovery and growth.

Other than that, I chomp on lots of real food for my nutrition.
