| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 7:39:07 PM | Okay, so I hurt my back moving furniture..
I am now on some Flexiril and Naprosen..
But I would have preferred Percocet... LOL
What's the best pain killer you have ever had?
Morphine sucked for me big time, it made me nauseous, made me itchy and gave me a headache so on top of it they gave me gravol, benadryl and tylenole.. How dumb is that?
Finally when the IV kicked out and the night nurses couldn't fix it, they put me on percocet. It worked pretty well for me.
Demorerl.. (sp??) also worked great but sooo addicting. When I had my tonsils out, I swear I came home after 10 days totally addicted.

I thought they might give me something for pain.. but nahhh.. she said Naprosen is also an effective pain killer.
That doctor LIED>>>> | |

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 7:46:27 PM | It can help with the pain, but its not really a pain killer. Its a nonsteroidal anti~inflammatory and the Flexeril is the muscle relaxant.
Naproxen is very hard on the stomach so make sure you take it with food/milk.
Its uses are for 1) mild to moderate pain 2)Musculoskeletal and soft tissue inflammation.
Both Flexeril and Naproxen can make you very drowsy. Be careful if driving or working.

On a serious note, if you have lower back pain from moving furniture, a relaxant is good, but you also need a pain killer. Robaxisil is good for the back, and now over the counter for certain strength.
When I had the tip my finger amputated they gave me a Rx for both, one pill was the size of a dime and the other about 1/3 that size, I always called them the "Oliver and Hardy" pills, cause boy, did I ever get giddy and not feel any pain when they were taken, but for the life of me I can't remember what they were!!

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 7:53:53 PM | The best painkiller I have tried was Morphine and Demerol. Morphine seemed to work a little better.
I have not tried Percocet.
From what I understand the strongest painkiller out there is Dilaudid. Its what we give at work to the patients that suffer from chronic or severe pain. From my experience of giving narcotics(which I do regularly and frequently daily) its the best one. Dilaudid seems to be the most effective from my stand point. Never taken it personally.

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 7:57:31 PM | Percs, do not work for me at all.. nor does Toradol.. Morphine & Demerol have been used during hospital stays.. after surgeries.. Often though.. I'm not in need of them.. luckily! Cannot have codeine due to an allergy..
If I have a headache or something achy.. I am best off with Aleve if I can get it from the States.. (haven't had in ages) Or the other OTC pain relievers..

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 7:58:58 PM | | When i was in the hospital for my first blood clot...they gave me some good stuff. When i got admitted by ambulance i honestly dont know what they gave me, It's the worst pain i ever had and it so acute they had to give me pain killer 3 times because it just didnt work. a few days later i was on morphine and they gave me a clicker so i could give myself my own doses...they got tired of coming by i guess or something...lol | |

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 8:02:22 PM | | Tylenol 3's are terrible. The work brilliantly to begin with but soon enough you find you have to take them at exponentially more freqeunt intervals. I hurt my back (had a bulging disk for about two months which pretty much incapacitated me until the physio started working) in 2002 and the doc put me on T3's. The first one lasted most of the day but towards the end, after about 6 weeks on them, I was taking one almost every half hour. What a gong show. And a nasty side effect, they slow down your GI tract so constipation sets in, which is great when you can hardly use a single muscle in your lower back.... | |

I'm not sure if many are willing to share their drugs hehe.
When I had back surgery a few years ago, I was given Leritine. Although I was told it was "heavy duty", it didn't really kill the pain but I got so high off of it I didn't really care that I was in pain lol.
All I know is I can't take codeine, I'm not allergic but I sure do have some not so positive side effects.
As for muscle aches and pains etc I really like Naproxen. Too bad it's not otc in Canada yet!

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 8:06:07 PM | I agree LovesCamping.
I was just prescribed T3's for migraines in November and they didn't touch the headache. Numbed it a bit, but didn't stop it at all.

Naproxen is Aleve, but alas, as Dew stated....not OTC in Canada.

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 8:22:46 PM | Dang how about some massages then???
Nobody wants to share their drugs/... I had the worst massage today... She is defintiely in the wrong business.
I've tried heat, ice, baths, massage.. and I'm hurting here. I can't seem to take a full breath.
It's the worst I've ever had...
Maybe it'll be better in the morning...????

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 8:25:40 PM | | GEM ... last week I hurt my knee and someone in my office who runs marathons told me about RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation for injury treatment). It could be difficult to elevate your back, but at least try the RIC lol. Grab a bag of peas from your freezer and strap it on to your back and hit the hay. | |
|
| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 8:26:02 PM | The Flexeril should start working in a day or two.
The Naproxen should start to help in approximately 30 minutes.
|
| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 8:58:05 PM | Naproxen/Alleve makes me sick. Dizzy, hives, spacey feeling. Not nice.
I just use Ibuprofen - you can take more than what they recommend on the bottle - I use it for cramps. No not little Nancy cramps - ones that feel like being in labour... Check with your doctor or CHR has a phone line to talk to a nurse. Check out the ibuprofen before you go for the prescription stuff.

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 9:05:40 PM | A doctor once told me that mersyndol (sp?) was the strongest OTC pain killer out there, except you have to ask the pharmacist for it, like with gravol. It's acetaminophen and codiene, she called it a "Tylenol 1".
I'm a big fan of the Aleve/naproxen sodium as well. I hate that it's a prescribed med here though, I bring it back from the states every time, no matter how much I have at home.
I used to have rediculous back pain, not from injury, just from life. A combination of chiro/massage seems to have fixed it. Good luck Gem!

| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 9:15:19 PM | Ibuprofen works great for muscle and bone pain. When I was weaning off pain killers following an accident, I eventually used just the Ibuprofen daily....try it. Shouldn't be really taking morphine or dilaudid for a strained back... | |
|
| Best Painkiller You've Tried Posted: 1/2/2007 10:04:04 PM | be careful of painkillers. I was perscribed two by the doctor when I had my car accident, and they damaged my liver - and still having after effects (didn't find out thats what was happening, until I was rushed to emergency. The doc said it was all in my head - yah - thats why I had an operation). So before you take ANYTHING especially if perscribed by your doctor, do research on it. Its sad that the research has to be up to the patients, but some doctors, as I found out, don't have a clue of some of the side effects, or ignore them. | |
