| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/4/2007 4:51:38 PM | I heard something on the news I think yesterday that British Columbia is the province which least believes in God and is the province which most supports gay marriages... I have Googled just now and cant find any facts... Is this true anyone? I do NOT wish to get into any debates over right and wrong, I only want to know if anyone else heard this and where I can find proof... Please dont make any judgements or comments of a personal nature. I am just asking for verification of this as I heard it but was not watching my television, as I was in another room... Not much of a bible belt around here, more like a g-string I guess! | |

Posted: 1/4/2007 5:16:58 PM | | I'm not basing this on facts (facts are for losers) but I would say BC probably is the most pro-gay province in Canada - just based on demographics - but the least spiritual? Maybe if you only consider major religions, but I would think there are an awful lot of spiritual people in BC (some of it is chemically induced, some not).

A lot of BC is Pro-gay marriage. I grew up in a town in BC - there was still gay bashing which was unacceptable behaviour.
People in general just need to grow up.

| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/4/2007 9:13:59 PM | That doesn't explain anything. Belief in God is caused by a gene sounds like an end all, be all statement, and I don't believe in such statements.
Since gene information makes protein, and protein like enzymes cause and effect brain chemicals, the chain reaction doesn't just end there. All kinds of chemicals we put into our body, including the kind referred to in BC is no ordinary chemical reaction,it can be extraordinary, or too much for some people to handle. To say, well that's bad, and has nothing to do with spirituality and God is just societal conditioning and morality talking.
Natural substances like those in BC or ..elsewhere which we put into our body is very much like our dream-states, they are both enzyme-driven processes. Some say it alters reality, but it can also be perceived to create another reality; our reality right now is not all the same, yours differs from mine, and mine differs from yours, even without any kind of chemical influence. Hallucinations can screw people up more than it can offer anything, so those people shouldn't bother with it. Hallucinations and other altered thinking can inspire and give insight, so those people like in tribal times who had animist views that the plant spirit is communicating, they can enhance learning and creativity. It is a privilege if it happens, but not to be taken lightly or disrespectfully. I think the reason these 'spiritual moments' must be brief is because to see a truer nature of reality is just too much for our human brains to bear witness to. So there you go, chemicals and ways to spirituality-sometimes used properly, sometimes not.

| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/4/2007 9:41:39 PM | Given that Vancouver has some very large religious suburbs (Sikh and Christian ones spring to mind), 60,000 Jewish people blast time I heard a count and BC was once Premiered by the fundie Christian Bill Van der Zalm, I doubt that it is all that irreligious. If you don't think BC has a Bible Belt, you aren't paying attention.
Cheers, (and check out the cult history of BC; that's entertaining!)

My cousin is becoming a reverend (8 years of school!) in a denomination of the Christian religion which allows gay marriage. I think it's called the United Church, but I'm not positive, sorry if I offended anyone, as I said I'm not sure if that's the church.

God is not in all spiritual beliefs in fact. as for BC and gay issues I believe if you check you will see that in fact Quebec supports gay marraige ahead of BC. It also has the highest percentage of people on Birth Control and living common law. A backlash to strict Catholic upbrining no doubt

| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/6/2007 10:19:14 AM | Thank you for your kind replies. I could not remember if they said spiritual or God-fearing, as I know as a Christian guy looking for a Christian girl that I run into the definition dilemma quite a bit while online. In my own experience, I have dated new-agers and buddhists and sikh, and I define that as spiritual. I was not refering to cult or demon conversing or conjuring organizations, as I am aware of its prevalence in our capital, and elsewhere... I know there are huge pro-gay movements in Quebec and Toronto, and I know there is in Van. I watched one gay parade, I found it quite hilarious! I equate Van with San Fran, and Montreal with Miami, and TO with NY. I know spiritual does not mean God fearing. My question was did anyone else hear this on the news last week. It was a Global fact bit and they spoke of BC being most pro-gay marriage supporting in Canada, right after they mentioned that it was either least spiritual or people interested in a relationship with God. As I stated, I dont want to get into right or wrong, my name means God is my Judge, so how can I judge others? It is live and let live unless your break down my door or hurt my woman or some kid. Then that is not personal and is a social issue. As for the guy who said I was not looking for a Bible belt in BC, I have been on several Christian sites and yes there are women out there, but I used to live in Arkansas, married a woman from Tennessee, and my last two relationships were with women from Florida, which is saturated with churches, and by that when I say Bible belt, yes that is belief in God, and not spiritual without God, spiritual being in reference to me, as a higher power or may the force be with you kind of spiritual.... I guess no one else heard that on the news... Thank you so much for your replies. | |

Curiously enough, B.C. is as diverse sociologically as the ecosystem that supports it. Certain locales in B.C. boast not only the highest concentration of churches per capita, but a parallel of 'grow shows' as well. Ying cannot exist without the yang.

| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/7/2007 4:30:04 AM | I found this in regards to same sex marriage, but no real polls on religion/spirituality.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_British_Columbia
Public Opinion Polls A June 12-July 06, 2003 Environics Research poll finds a 53%-43% margin nationwide in favour of same-sex marriage. The poll concludes British Columbia shows one of the highest levels of support, but doesn't give a figure. Most Canadians Support Gay Marriage
A December 14-January 05, 2005 Environics Research poll finds a 54%-43% margin nationwide in favour of same-sex marriage. 214 British Columbians were surveyed in the poll, and 60% of respondents said they were in favour of same-sex marriage, while 38% were opposed. Environics Poll
I find it interesting that BC would be deemed least spiritual, when we have the highest percentage of aboriginal people.. and most I know are very spiritual, even though this may not mean Christian.

They actually do that often where they quote some poll about Canadian provinces. Sorry, can't direct you on where to find it in writing though!
Edit* it was likely content of an Ipsos Reid poll for Global News on the year. I see that there was one Dec 30 2006 although have not got the ability to access it. ....just a thought.

I certainly do not count "belief in god" as the only marker for being "spiritual" though.
As for the pro-gay marriage "facts"
look at the size of the sample ....it is not statistically significant.
I would like to THINK we are the most pro-gay marriage province though.

I was under the impression that the Fraser Valley and the Christian Valley were considered two bible belts in BC.

Posted: 1/7/2007 10:42:52 AM | loveatmidnight, I would suggest either going to Global's website & trying to search for the information you want there, or try looking up the StatsCan (Statistics Canada) website. I don't have the web addresses for either, so I would suggest trying Google.
Personally, I can't wait to be invited to a gay wedding
I'll even offer to cater at cost!

| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/7/2007 10:58:33 AM | | Would'nt surprise me to believe that we,as a province, have the largest amount of people that don't believe in ORGANIZED religon and also believe in someone's right to pick their own partner. From what I do see out there, our province has a lot of people that are educated, intelligent, and that have the willingness to be open-minded enough to listen to different views and make their own descisions. Most organized religons to not give their followers that choice. | |

why? they are no different than any other wedding,... kiss your partner at the end,...then eat, drink and be merry ( or similar celebration to follow),...open gifts the next day..... same old same old.

| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/7/2007 11:36:15 AM | | I'm finding BC to be growing, or at least on the island, in regards to religion and spiritual beliefs. I think our situation with gay marriage is because we are more accepting that you can be gay and be married and still believe in the values of the church. One doesn't affect the other in my book. | |

| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/7/2007 4:50:46 PM | | i haven't heard anything like that but i have lived in 3 provinces and 1 territory and bc is the place where i find the people to be most open minded. and you don't necessarily have to believe in god or be a "christian" to be spiritual. the mountains draw a lot of people with their own spiritual beliefs that are not necessarily considered mainstream. i am a flatlander and i find that the mountains have their own spirituality. the people that get out and enjoy them usually find spirituality in nature and the earth. that is my experience at least. | |

| Is BC the least spiritual, most pro-gay marriage province? Posted: 1/7/2007 5:59:59 PM | Thank-you Yayawhatever, Thank-you Themaven, Thank-you Whodeletedme...
I know I am going senile and crazy, but I appreciate you taking the time to back me up! I thought I was hearing things on the television... Okay Scotty, you can beam me up now! Scotty... Scotty?
Yaya, I believe First Nations are very spiritual as well, and I believe Whodeleted me answers both our questions and the others as to whether BC was least likely to be 'spiritual' or believing in 'God', and as I suspected, it was in God... Just went on here to clarify that. Thanks.
Thank-you all others for your help, and for your suggestion Michaelann to Google StatsCan, and you Qwerky for bringing out the Fraser Valley as the little Bible belt... I know Abbotsford is named after the abbots in that monastery by the highway...
I have no doubt anyone that there are Christians in BC. I was just mildly surprised to hear that our province, (which is important to me because I live and vote in it Qwerky), is the least likely to believe in the Creator God of the KJ Bible. No doubt this is likely due to the east coast welcoming European emmigration, and the west coast more from Asia, which have their own gods, spiritualism, and beliefs.
Because prayer has been banned from public schools (Columbine!), the Ten Commandments from the courthouses, and even the fight over the Christmas tree in the airport (which I know has pagan roots, no pun intended!) and in Toronto recently in a government building, I am just sitting back and shaking my head in disbelief as I watch the news, and why our justice system favors the criminal over the victim, and people have lost faith in the system as I have, not in God...
I am wondering if our dread of being labelled 'not politically correct', or 'intolerant', or heaven forbid 'hateful', 'racist' or supporting any one 'religion', 'belief' or 'cult'.... is slowly eroding and diffusing our own personal values...
Canada and USA, after they drove off the First Nations (which I profusely apologize for), formed their governments based on 'In God We Trust', as many fled here to escape the religious persecution in Europe at the time. And that God blessed our countries with the rennaissance of art, literature and technological advance so devoid and suppressed in the Dark Ages... That is why Canada and the US are so desirable to emmigrate to from other countries. We shouldnt forget that as we welcome with our open arms, we have a good thing going, and are trying to make it work I guess... We need to respect each other, remember why our country is so beautiful, and not lose ourselves in the process.
Just signs of the times... He is coming soon. Thank-you all for your kind replies.

Couldn't have said it better myself! Nicely done.
Oh, and to the OP, although many have said it already I have to reiterate....you don't have to be a Christian to be spiritual or to believe in "God".

The dread of being PC is better than the reality of hate mongering and intolerance, so no, I think we need those "guidelines"...better than the alternative. IMHO
