Just came from Amsterdam (I used to live there as well), and I love the vibe of this town. And/But it has luckily plenty more to offer than you just described.

| amsterdam Posted: 1/30/2007 4:43:00 AM | | I love my capital! But I could smoke pot legally in the whole country so for that I don't have to go to Amsterdam. There are just a lot of other things to do there, that's what makes it so interesting to me. | |

| amsterdam Posted: 1/31/2007 9:44:34 AM | | Been there and done that. My good time was ended when I decided I was going to smoke the Old Merry Jane. I turned so paranoid that I ended up back in my Hotel room with a dry mouth. | |

| amsterdam Posted: 3/5/2007 5:33:52 PM | I thought Amsterdam was very clean and since everyone rides bicycles instead of cars the pollution level was low. People were for the most part friendly and helpfull. Hash bars were interesting for a 1st time traveler but after visiting them the first day the novelty wore off and really wanted to be aware to see the sites. Red light district was really tacky and after one block all I saw was ugly fat black women and they were really gross. Be sure to go to the Rijksmuseum and Flower Market as were worth while. Van Gogh museum was nice but be sure to get the headphones to plug into the wall that desribes each painting. We stayed at a beautifull apartment overlooking the canal but my friend also liked to stay on a boathouse right on the canal. Be sure to get to the Schiphol airport early as the lines are very long and we were an hour late arriving and noone would let us in the line to catch our plane so we had to stay another day.....oh well...at least we got to see a few more sites! | |

| amsterdam Posted: 3/16/2007 4:15:51 PM | Amsterdam is lovely...anyone thinking of going there should try it. Great if you like to smoke/drink the place is full of coffees shops (not just selling coffee ) and bars/clubs. I think many people think of Amsterdam just as a destination for young people or hen/stag dos, but it's not theres loads of sightseeing/attractions to visit even if you don't drink/smoke or pay for sex hee hee. Anne Franks house is the best! It's amazing actually walking round the secret annexe of the girl whos diary we all read in school. They have a museum of the Franks familys belongings too, and a gift shop where you can buy loads of tacky but essential stuff after the tour. They have Amsterdam Dungeons, which is just like London Dungeons, exactly the same style/layout, just obviously the grim/gory history of Amsterdam as opposed to London. The Heineken Brewery is brillient, but not in the centre, you have to get tram/cab there. Take a couple of hours to get round, but very cheap to visit, lkearn the history of Heineken and get free beer and a free gift at the end. Anyone wanting a good hotel 4* b/b Golden Tulip Inntel (right by the damrak, 5 mins walk from Dam Square.) Fairly cheap too! | |

| amsterdam Posted: 3/16/2007 9:33:59 PM | | Holland is fantastic to visit, especially from end of March through mid May. The tulips are awesome, cheese is great, and yes, the "coffee" houses are cool too. Haven't been to Paris although that is on my list of 50+ other places I want to see. | |

| amsterdam Posted: 3/17/2007 6:00:19 PM | I was there in April, I left just before the Queensday party on April 30, which was unfortunate because I heard its crazy.
I ate a really good meal at the El Rancho Steakhouse, which is in Leidseplein.
Its an Argentinian all you can eat place. The first plate had two large ribs and a half rib, plus fries and I think a salad. I was stuffed with that, no need for another round of ribs.
The food was fantastic.
There's lots of activity in Leidseplein, of course if you want some home cookin, you can eat at the Burger King. lol | |

| amsterdam Posted: 3/19/2007 10:43:22 PM | Hi people!
Amsterdam is a nice city to visit, but outside of that the country can offer much more. There are other nice cities as Utrecht and Leiden, that also have a cultural tradition (and plenty of things to do).
If you have time there, you can take the train and go to the South (Maastricht) and see just about the only hilly area of the country. If you can rent a car you can go to Zeeland and see the waterworks and visit a museum of the Dutch struggle against the sea over the years.
Avoid the too touristy places of Volendam or Delft in the high season (I'm under the impression it is a bit overdone).
The Netherlands is also a great springboard for visiting Belgium, Germany or England depending on where your coming from.
Just two cents!

| amsterdam Posted: 3/19/2007 10:55:07 PM | Amsterdam is so much more than anyone can explain - if I ever get lucky enough to ever see anything like the tulip fields again - I will consider it a one-in-a-life-time experience - that I got to have twice!!!!!! I have a shot at seeing it again in 3 weeks - no one can predict the season - I hope I get lucky (as usual I am hoping I will get lucky - usually at sex - right now, just hoping for flowers....lol) | |

| amsterdam Posted: 11/6/2009 5:20:49 PM | | One of the things I like about Amsterdam is it is a great walking city. I love to walk when I travel to different European cities, but some are too big. I love Florence and Amsterdam because of the great walking tours you can do, on your own. | |
