On the radio this morning I heard that schools are thinking/in the process of banning all teachers from smoking on the school property. I can't seen to locate this in the news paper.

Do any of you have more information on this?? And what are your thoughts??

The reasoning I had heard was to stop the promotion of smoking to elementary children. Monkey see, monkey do mentality.

And here I thought we were talking about hot teachers ............

OT

Don't get the paper but I absolutely agree with the logic. If the kids can't smoke on the property - neither can the teachers. Govt buildings, we low-life staff can't smoke on the govt property - neither can management .....

Reminds me of high school when our ex-hippie art teacher would go out to have a smoke with some of the students. Of course,he was smoking marijuana.

There's only one division this is allowed in, Winnipeg School Division which is mostly the inner city. It's not just the teachers who are allowed to smoke on the property but the students can as well. All other divisions are smoke free, if you want to have a ciggie you have to go off the premesis and down the street or to the sidewalk.

Most of the schools in the Winnipeg School Division have designated smoking areas, the teachers have theirs the students have theirs and nobody really goes into each other's areas because when they go out for a smoke they want to be able to b itch and complain about the other group... hard to do if there's a teen or teacher around you.

Winnipeg School Division is debating whether or not to change the policy and make all the buildings smoke free zones. It's been debated by their trustees many many times and always fails. They keep trying though and eventually will succeed.

I can tell you as a teacher and as an ex smoker it's awkward as hell to have your students see you smoke. I worked in Winnipeg SD for a while and went out for smokes with the other teachers at recess. We had to hide really good so they didn't see us because in a lot of cases the kids lose respect for you if they see you smoking. Hell I wouldn't even light one up in my car until I past the school and all students around it for fear one would see me! It's not that we would be influencing them into thinking smoking was cool. They knew better, it was the loss of respect from the kids and their parents that really did it.

But even at that with the other school divisions having anti-smoking policies kids still smoke on the grounds. In high school we did all the time, stood in front of the front or back doors smoking away. The principal would come out, tell us to move to the sidewalk, where we stood til the door closed and we went back again. The smoking bans on school grounds are very hard to enforce, especially in the high school years. Jr. High they'll do whatever they want, they're invinsible. But yeah, before i started rambling, yes Winnipeg SD has a smoking policy, yes it sucks and they're going for another vote in the near future again over it. They'll vote on it constantly until it's voted in.

Thanks for that Munkeechi! I do agree that one day it will be put into effect. Just a matter of time. And soon we won't be able to do things in our back yard!

If anything, wouldn't a teacher that smokes be the perfect candidate to tell you everything that's wrong with the addiction? Teacher's are the ones that younger students listen to. Or am I just dreamin' again?? lol

Ya,the freekin.....Smoking Police will be everwhere.I believe all smokers should have the right and a place, especially to smoke.Banning teachers from smoking is not fair, hell, most kids now a days smoke, even so called"bumming" cigs from people.Don't get me wrong,i do respect non smokers and do not smoke around them, but damn we "Smokers" have rights too. After all we are supplying the government with money.I'd sure like to see someone telling me i can't smoke in my "back yard",that sharp stick would come out so fast, the idiot would be leaving a......smoking trail just running away.

Made me laugh. If it weren't for the smoking population, everyone's taxes would go up.

Against or for, smoker or non, I agree that we all have our rights. I also do not smoke around non smokers, and have been cutting back in an attempt to quit all together. BUT have always thought those that smoke do not have to be treated like they are doing something illegal. Putting those that smoke in little rooms on their own, banning them from certain locations.....does this not sound like a form of segregation?

Time and time again, the government takes that one step too far. It's all about control, who has it, and who wants it.

Just for the sake of clarity, smokers are not banned from any location, as long as they are not carrying a lit cigarette.

The only "right" a smoker has is to do whatever they want to their own body, without jeopardizing anyone else's health. That being the case, they should only be able to smoke in their own homes or on their private property.

This "right" does not extend to allow a smoker to put my health at risk. Period.

Banned is still banned.

And is your health not at risk every day? No matter what it is you are doing. Driving, walking, talking, opening your mail, putting food into your stomach, etc. etc. etc.

I understand what all of you are saying, but the 'holier than thou' mentality does not live here.

I work for the Federal Government and we ARE allowed to smoke on the property. There is no smoking allowed in the building though. You must step right outside the door.

See my place where I'm living its a smoking place but if there's non smokers that come over I just go to my room which is on the far opposite side of my living room and smoke there to respect the non smokers its much better then smoking in the same room as them if it bothers them.

for the elementary schools, don't let the teachers smoke. Period. We are supposed to be role models for the kids, not bad influences.

It's up to each individual person as to whether or not they smoke, I'm all for it as I used to be a smoker, but I'm not into having the people our kids really do look up to being able to have that kind of influence on my kid.

I remember when i was in elementary that the teachers were not allowed to smoke where the kids could see them at all. yes, they could still smoke indoors then, but they had to make sure it was completely out of our site.

I just think it would be better if they didn't have the smoking on school grounds. What's expected of the kids should be expected of the staff. It just shows that the staff is respecting the students which in turn has the kids respecting them.

I agree, smoking around young children should not be done period, but the older ones, hell,go look around a school yard at lunchtime, but make sure your car windows are completely......UP.

There is no holier than thou attitude being held by anyone that wishes for their own health not be be compromised by someone else's actions.

Driving, walking, talking, opening your mail, putting food into your stomach, etc. etc. etc.[.quote]

Yes, life is dangerous and we can be harmed doing any mundane activity. But when someone else's actions negatively affects others lives, then that must be controlled. It's the same as controlling someone's right to drive when they've had too much alcohol/drugs, someone's right to carry sharp objects on an airplane, or someone's right to bring a weapon(or something that could be used as a weapon) into a nightclub. These situations all involve a banishment for those that attempt to disobey the law/rule. And it's for the safety of others that these laws/rules are put in place.

Smoke if you like..go ahead..just don't do it in the presence of other people. Go find a bubble to smoke in, maybe..

We should not allow teachers smoke where our kids can see no matter what age.. Its wrong period.. We as parents/teachers/adults should be an example and not have this attitude "don't do as I do".. Wheres the lesson in that?
I am not a smoker but my bf is.. He smokes outside no matter how freaking cold it is!!! It's unhealthy for my kids and myself... And will not take that risk..
Teachers should be a role model... So in my opinon teachers shouldn't be allowed to smoke on school property... In opinon anybody who lights up around minors is wrong.. If smokers want to kill themselves by smoking but don't do it around others... I realise theres other ways we are unhealthy but we are talking about smoking here...

Phoenix, you have to realize that your "rights" end where they come to affect mine, and vice versa. If you accept that smoke is bad, whether it be first or second hand, then you agree that I have the right not to be poisoned because you choose to smoke. You do not have the right to adversely affect my health. As I said, if it's your private property, you get to call the shots. However, in public, you don't.

Take it as a "holier than thou" attitude, I don't care. I don't feel "holier" than anyone, you included. I just don't want to get sick from your smoke. Why can't you realize that it's as simple as that?

OT...What is the simple thing is....smokers and non smokers each have their rights. Now if i am invited into someone's home, that does not smoke,i most definately will go outside to smoke. In a restautant,no you can not smoke....i go outside!Am i affecting anyone's health but my own....NO.If someone is smoking out in a public place and you feel this smoke will affect your health....very simple.Do not stand around them as they.....smoke.

Wrong. In a public place the onus is not on the person who's health is being jeopardized. It's on the person who is risking other people's health by whatever activity they are undertaking - ie. smoking. You do not have any such "right" in a public place. And laws all over the world are coming to that point fairly quickly, I might add.

Certain professions carry responsibilities with them. Teachers are role models and therefore should not smoke in the presence of kids (if at all - secret smoking might suggest certain ethics I think). Doctors fall into a similar category. Talk to me about my health but also lead by example.

Politicians should ... errr ... ok maybe not a good example.

I am wondering about my mechanic whose car has the burnt out head light and squeeky breaks.

Oh yeah, btw, humping students is a definite NO NO. "Moral Turpitude" was the phrase I first heard. Followed shortly by "Criminal Charges", "Your sorry a$$ in jail", "Bubba's gonna Love Ya", and other choice phrases.

IMHO.

Next thing you know.. hockey players and baseball players wont be allowed to smoke either? I mean, these are the people kids look up to, not teachers! lol Ban parents from smoking too, theyre a larger role model than teachers are.

How would YOU (speaking to anyone who smokes) like it if your job said you cant smoke anymore while at work. Especially a high stress job such as teaching. The profession is in bad enough shape with not enough teachers , banning smoking will make it even worse. Id rather have a qualified smoking teacher than an under-qualified non-smoking teacher.

Or MAYBE parents should start doing their ****ing job already and teach raise their kids properly. Stop blaming other people for this that and the other and take a few minutes out of the day to educate a kid on smoking. All these soccer moms are ruining the whole concept of parenting, by making the world change around them so they have less work to do. In the end , it just damages the kids! Being in a spoonfed environment does nothing but turn them into pussies.

OT: your mechanics car is broken because he fixes everyone elses car all day long, and doesnt feel like spending his own time doing More work, on his own. Its easier to delay a personal project a month or two than a clients project. I do this all the time.

This crap about peoples rights and smoking in public places is kinda silly , dont you think? You actually believe that if you stepped out of a restraunt to get some fresh air and theres 5 people smoking, that you have the right to tell them to leave, cuz their smoke is bothering you? LOL Good luck on that one. You also have the right to walk away.

HHHHHHmmmm well keeping with the logic perhaps we need to eliminate cars...
there exaust is destroying the air...all you people learn to walk to work...your cars are affecting my health with the air they goop up....that's it....hahahaha...
Now that's falked up idea and it is as instrumental in argument as any of the past remarks about humans health.........cry me a falking river....
Now last i checked teachers are not robots.... they get coffee breaks and lunch breaks so they could leave the biulding for a smoke.......good heavins for the shitty paychecks and the rotten working conditions and all the screwed up parents with there individual crap when do these human's have a part of the day that is there's hu when...
Every single human who works is entitled to free time and to have an employer discriminate against something the government turns around and soley regulates
is just a falking joke...round and round and round...

If your so concerned with rolemodle home school your kids.......so your little Johnny
might see a teacher smoke.......well boo hoo.....and on TV and everywhere else...when are we going to take smoking out of sex scenes on TV.... this is just another way for humans to loose still yet one more freedom...
And since twice as many cars on the road as smokers perhaps we need to address the real monster that kills our air.........your CAR.....perhaps it would do your kid good to walk to school instead of you driving your car and posioning all those young lungs.....

ever notice how many parents park infront of the school to pick up there child...well what about your fumes posioning all those other kids.
