April 23, 2007 - 8 pm THE MORE THE MERRIER (1943, 104 min.) Jean Arthur, Joel McCrea, Charles Coburn During wartime Washington’s housing shortage, a prim young lady reluctantly agrees to take an elderly man as boarder. He then sublets half his room to a handsome visitor, creating a variety of hilarious situations. A refreshingly intimate movie and one of the great comedies of the 40s. Director: George Stevens
April 30, 2007 - 8 pm DESIGNING WOMAN (1957, colour, 118 min.) Gregory Peck, Lauren Bacall A bubbly comedy in the best plush MGM style, following a fashion designer’s decision to marry a sportswriter. What results is an amiable clash of interests reminiscent of the great Tracy-Hepburn vehicles. Director: Vincente Minnelli
May 7, 2007 - 8 pm IT STARTED IN NAPLES (1960, colour, 100 min.) Clark Gable, Sophia Loren Gable (stiff with American honesty) and Loren (voluble with Italian guile) squabble over the future of an orphan child amid the ‘dolce vita’ temptations of a travelogue Italy. Sophia’s ebullience kick-starts this comedy to life. Director: Melville Shavelson
May 14, 2007 - 8 pm THE THRILL OF IT ALL (1963, colour, 108 min.) Doris Day, James Garner A frothy matrimonial farce scripted by Carl Reiner that takes a satiric look at the world of TV advertising. Doris is a squeaky-clean housewife who is chosen to appear in soap commercials. The resulting fame disrupts her marriage and family life. Director: Norman Jewison
May 28, 2007 - 8 pm MAN’S FAVORITE SPORT (1963, colour, 120 min.) Rock Hudson, Paula Prentiss A so-called fishing ‘expert’, who in reality has never fished, is forced to enter a big tournament where he’s confronted with a superior sportswoman. An amusing battle-of-the-sexes tale loaded with slapstick and some sexual innuendo. Director: Howard Hawks
June 4, 2007 - 8 pm CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1945, 101 min.) Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan Forced to entertain her boss and a war veteran for the holidays, chic columnist Stanwyck, who has been posing as a homemaking expert, stands in danger of being exposed and fired. June 11, 2007 - 8 pm NORTH TO ALASKA (1960, colour, 122 min.) John Wayne, Stewart Granger, Capucine A fast-moving, tongue-in-cheek North-Western. After striking gold Wayne travels to Seattle to fetch his partner’s sweetheart. But a surprise awaits. This film gave Wayne a rare chance to show his lighter side and play for laughs by throwing punch lines as well as punches.
