| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/18/2007 2:54:14 PM | | I dont sleep! Well I guess I do sort of but really it is a series of cat naps. I am not on any medications and even when I have been for illness which is very rare it is the same. I thought it was about money so I worked on that and became debt free, I exercised regularily for a year and had the problem before when I was a bum and during my exercising and will be starting again like everyone on Monday lol! I need rest I feel as if I have been awake for years. If I go to bed at 9 I wake at 12, fall asleep with TV at 12:30 up at 3 etc. I can not fall asleep without the TV I used to be able to use the radio but now I will also just lay there. I tried turing the tv off for a week but I lay there for HOURS and its quite unusual I can be sooo tired but if I lay in silence and darkness I have enough energy to run a marithon but when I get up I feel like CRAP! Im lost I am tired and if anyone can offer any solutions without medication that would be great. I also called a therapist and have been working with her thinking my childhood may be the reason but in my head I feel I am at peace with it! What a mess. Like the song if youve ever heard the silence iits a god awful sound! Good Day | |

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/18/2007 3:13:27 PM | As an acupuncturist I see many patients with a variety of sleep problems, getting to sleep and staying asleep. Sounds like you have both. One of the unknown benefits of this Chinese healing is the effect on sleep issues. Patients report getting better, deeper sleep and being able to stay asleep. Without going into the possible causes from a Chinese medical perspective, I'd say that acupuncture would be a good medication free path to explore.
Lack of sleep will eventually cause other problems since your body has lots of "work" to do during it's down time. Good luck!!

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/18/2007 3:16:18 PM | | I have thought of that as I am leaning on a more natural lifestyle, however do they have to use needles? I mean I just am not sure if i could handle that? Well even though I am done what I have to say I have to keep typing cause my post is too short! Lets see if I have enough now? | |

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/18/2007 3:41:14 PM | | You might consider yoga, tai chi or meditation. Instead of television, have you tried falling asleep listening to spiritual music? You might also look at your diet and patterns of eating. A nutritionist might be able to help with this. | |

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/18/2007 4:47:17 PM | I hear ya chick.... at this precise moment in time, I have been awake for the last 40 hours!!!!
I liked this website:
http://www.counselling.cam.ac.uk/insom.html
I know I'm not much of an advert but prior to using some of the techniques on this website I was a chronic insomniac. Now I'm just a transient insomniac.

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/18/2007 5:45:59 PM | For years I had insomnia. As a child, teenager, and young adult I would lay awake thinking of everything under the son. I let everything get to me and thought that every problem in the world was my responsibility to solve. I let everything bother me and I wasn't financial secure (borrowing money always to get to the next paycheque). Finally I kept telling myself over and over to think of nothing as I tried to sleep. I tried not to involve myself with every problem of the world and I got a way better job. I was happier with my self and my surroundings and then I finally slept. Try finding peace in your life whatever kind of peace it is that you need. Now the only time I can't sleep is when I can't tear myself off of this site! haha | |

However, the sensation is nothing like what you've experienced from a hypodermic injection. Acupuncture needles are as thin as a few hairs and no fluid enters or leaves the body so the experience can range from nothing at all...yes, no sensation, to a sting or ache.

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/18/2007 7:48:00 PM | | 98% of people who believe they have insomnia actually sleep very well. It's just that They wake up periodically throughout the night. I on the other hand was actually diagnosed by a physician, he established it really was insomnia after me logging 20 hours of sleep in a two week period based upon written logs... 4:00am bed time waking up at 5-6:00 am for morning classes :P That's insomnia this issue persisted over a 9-10 month period . But my main problem was stress and distractions I eliminated the computer, and books and BAM! what else was I going to do but sleep. Also I was able to alleviate my stress by becoming way more physically active, I stopped laying in bed thinking about my problems. Medication over a week also helped me regulate my sleeping patterns. good luck turn off the computer before 11:00 and no tv. :P | |

I rearranged my bedroom, removed the computer and TV and got room darkening blinds. I made my bedroom a place strictly to relax and sleep and it worked!

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/20/2007 3:32:41 AM | I was just going to make up a thread on this!!! I've woken up by myself between 2am and 4am for the last 2 weeks. I thought it was because I'd just worked night shifts for over a month, and switching back to days was just being a little challenging, but I've tried everything that normally works for 'fixing' that, and nothing is working!
Yesterday, I went skiing for 4 hours. The day before, I went ice skating for 1 1/2 hours, followed by 1 hour of Taekwondo, then took a sleeping pill (Nytol), and still woke up at 3am after going to bed at 11pm. I've been sick with a head/throat/sinus cold for 3 weeks now, which isn't resolving because I'm just not sleeping.
I obviously don't have any good advice for you... otherwise, I'd be napping right now (it's 4:30am right now). I even have to work a 12 hour shift today, followed by a formal dinner later tonight.
I WANNA SLEEP!!!!! | |

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/20/2007 12:34:48 PM | | yaya i was doing a late shift thing too...hopefull this is done...and no fires this week - sigh | |

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/20/2007 4:58:06 PM | develop a pattern, always wake up at the same time. even if your up partying and only get 1 hour of sleep a day.... try melatonin, its not medication, it helps with jet lag. gets you into rem faster. | |
|
| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/20/2007 7:07:38 PM | ^^^ Easier said than done. When you have a healthy mix of day, evening and night shifts, piled ontop of kids and housework.... doesn't necessarily happen! I'm pretty sure that's where my problem lies right now!

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/21/2007 8:03:14 AM | "I was just going to make up a thread on this!!! I've woken up by myself between 2am and 4am for the last 2 weeks." This is NOT insomnia!!! This is lack of a bed partner, or did you toss and turn and they left the bed?! Then you could maybe link it to your insomnia! | |

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 1/21/2007 8:29:08 AM | Try taking two heaping tablespoons of honey when you wake up. It's very odd stuff because the sugar in it is called levelose. Like it sounds it actually helps level you out, if your body needs to get going you will get energy, when your body needs rest it will help you sleep. It levels you out.
I know you said no meds, but consider taking a 12mg tablet of OTC Chlorotrimeton. It's for allergies and has a side effect of tiredness, but it will also help you sleep THROUGH the night since it is a time released product. You also might be experiencing some arthritis or something that is a low level pain waking you up. The Chlorotrimeton will help because it helps suppress inflammation as most antihistamines do.
The other thing that might help the chronic insomomiacs here is to reset their circadian rhythms by using three 20-30 minute exposures to bright light. Pilots and stewardesses use this trick a lot to get rest when their bodies are still thinking they are in another time zone (jetlagged). Google the circadian rhythm and read all you can.

I dont think its really insomnia, it might just be bad habits, true insomnia is when you cant sleep for days and days. sometimes you have to force yourself to wake up, same time every day, self dicipline is a pain in the ass, but in the long run it works out better for you.
|
| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 2/27/2007 3:54:51 PM | | Since thinking and worrying is keeping you up at night: Here's something else to keep in mind - the Dust Mite infestation inside and outside your mattress (saw that on a TV commercial). Good Night. | |

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 2/28/2007 8:31:57 AM | I am a true insomniac as work keeps me up and when I am trying to sleep I either get paged or have so much on my mind from work that I cant sleep ..
I second that ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH

| Insomnia ARRRGGGGGHHHHH Posted: 2/28/2007 9:27:46 AM | My Mom used to say "Of course it does good to worry as the things I worry about never happen". My Grandmother had a shoebox that she "Put her worries in and stuck under the bed so she could sleep". Goofy I know but I kind of like the shoebox one, may even try it tonight. | |
