I had an asthma attack that had me in hospital for over a week, so I feel I had a head start. I could well have started again when I came out, but chose not too, seeing my kids faces and not thinking I was going to survive synched it for me.

I think you have really got to want to give up, then you will succeed, forget patches.
I don't find the cravings are that bad, they don't last long, it's the habits you have gotten into that are the hardest, cigarette after meals, with a drink down the pub, seeing people lighting up on the tv is one of mine, I can even smell it

You need something to occupy your mind and your hands. And have faith in yourself you can do it, when you want too :o)

Being on oxygen for a week helps though

MSG 3 "Being on oxygen for a week helps though "

LOL

It reminds me of the programme I watched some time ago, concerning smokers who had survived heart attacks, but were in hospital recovering.

The doctor was doing the rounds, and chatted to this Scotsman who had nearly died three days' previously. The doctor saw that the guy had a packet of fags next to the bed, as well as a dirty ashtray.

Doctor: I can see that you are back on the cigarettes already.

Patient (embarrassed): Oh, not really, Doc, they are there just for emergencies.

Doctor: I suggest that you have no idea what constitutes an "emergency".

A good tip is to stop buying the things in the first place.

If you must buy them, don't ever open the packet.

If you must open the packet, don't take one of them out.

If you must take one of them out, don't put it in your mouth.

If you must put one in your mouth, don't light it.

If you must light one whilst it is in your mouth, don't inhale the smoke.

If you must inhale the smoke, then NOTHING can help you!

I stopped smoking 3 days ago. I hated smoking so that is the thing that is stopping me picking up a ciggie right now. Knowing how much I hated the smell when I woke up in the am from a night out and would stink of stale smoke - yuk! that is what is keeping me form lighting up!

Woohooooo just think you won't have to put up with the social victimisation anymore. All the discrimination and non smokers banging on about it.

Just think soon 2 5hit stabbers may be able to adopt a child. A normal couple won't be able to smoke in a pub though!!!!!!

The link Willow gave is extremeley helpful.

I have not smoked for a week now ,still a long way to go!

The doctors can give you patches and support but I found that despite trying to quit before and failing the one thing that was different this time was that I WANTED to stop and was not bowing down to other peoples opinions.

Also the no smoking ban had a factor,in that I did not want to be spending all my social time at home or in the cold and rain, just so I could smoke!!!

Ive been pretty lucky with it i once stopped for nearly four years, but started again during a really stressfull time last year and have now stopped again, each person is different the patches worked for me also getting a lollipop when i had the urge to have a smoke because you have the hand to mouth contact.

smoking is all in your head, the patches and stuff like that are just an alternative habit.
I was ill for a few days which got me off the dam things , I coudnt taste them, when I realized how long I had gone without, I set out to keep going and did so, been about 4 years now. best thing I ever did for myself and that helps, don't stop for otheres, stop for you.

PS I stoped a few years before that, I went cold turrkey on no smoking day of my own accord. anyone can do it, but you have to DO it not think about it!

Best of luck to anyone having a bash!

I gave up March 1st last year. I used lozenges....they are great as they instantly take away the craving...the mint ones were best.
It's not easy.....and it's especially not easy the second time....I honstly still miss smoking....but wouldn't go back to it.
Best thing for me since I gave up....my 17yr old daughter hugs me cos I don't smell anymore!

Message 3 give a very good helper.

My friend quit and he went to counselling sessions to help, one of the things they tell you which he passed on to me and worked was that cravings only last for about 3 mins, if you can occupy yourself and your hands for that 3 mins everytime your well on your way to cracking it. Like do the washing up instead of using the dish washer.

One thing i found helpful is to go for a walk or the gym. Then you feel good about yourself, also helps you stop eating as well.

Willow that link was class but it said and I quote " Many smokers have successfully given up cigarettes by replacing them with new habits " That's good advice and I did try it...but now I am a nympho so have a new habit

OP I tried patches but best thing was drinking water sipping it when I wanted a ciggy. Also those plastic inhilators were good as well. Good luck to anyone trying to stop

I quit four years ago after having read Allen Carr's book. I've barely wanted one since, save a couple of times when I'd had a few beers in the first few weeks. It was so easy.
I've bought the book for several other people with about a 75% success rate.
Maybe local libraries have it if you're reluctant to buy it but I highly recommend it, although I appreciate that it's hard to believe a book could make it so simple....

MSG 21 One of Allen Carr's theories about smoking centered on the "fear" of not smoking. He found that people were more worried about facing the future without these ghastly objects than in missing the taste.

It was a good theory, and he used it to go from a hundred-a-day man to total abstention.

He died about four weeks ago, and his method helped millions to stop smoking.

Allen Carr died of lung cancer in November, although he lived for 23 years after stopping smoking..

As some say, you wont stop unless you want to stop, helpful tips/books or not..

I used patches for the first 2 weeks and now I am not using anything..Maybe I have cracked this habit, maybe I havent.. 17 days and counting..

Not ready to change my profile just yet, thats just tempting fate..

Good luck to those who stopped last week, and those who continue to try. Keep it up..

I have read a few pages of Alan Carrs book and the one thing that I learnt from it is that you are NOT giving anything up ,You are stopping doing something, which is not good for you.

Also YOU have to want to do it !!!

I am on day 10 of NOT smoking and I am doing ok!!

Good luck to all those that have tried, those that are going to or those that have suceeded in stopping!
