| Geocaching Posted: 1/28/2007 4:59:50 PM | Anyone around here done some? I think that be something fun to try.
For those that never heard of that it's like a treasure hunt but you use a GPS system to find treasure cache. They usually contain trinkets. You can take a trinket but you are to leave one.
I used to do Orienteering too and that's another fun thing to do that is similar in a way to Geocaching.

| Geocaching Posted: 1/28/2007 5:01:42 PM | | There was some going on in Banff...but I think that the lovely friendly park wardens shut it down. Too much destruction going off the trails?!?!?!? Made no sense to me that they shut it down. | |

| Geocaching Posted: 1/28/2007 5:02:53 PM | This sounds really interesting and something new and different.
I'd be interested. Count me in.

| Geocaching Posted: 1/28/2007 5:18:35 PM | | that sounds so fun! i bet you can rent gps units at mountain equipment coop. | |
|
| Geocaching Posted: 1/28/2007 5:18:58 PM | | Never have, but I've always wanted to try. geocaching.com has all the information you need plus a searchable database of caches. e.g. there are 6 within 1 km of my house. The puzzle searches (where you have to figure out clues to know where to go next) sound particularly interesting. | |

| Geocaching Posted: 1/28/2007 5:51:22 PM | | I went geocaching once this summer. It was a decent hike and plenty of fun. | |

| Geocaching Posted: 1/29/2007 8:38:34 AM | | There are people out there who treat it like a nice day out for a hike, and others who go like mad dogs, real extreme guys. Something for everyone, and nav skills are definitely a must have for anyone who ventures off-road. | |

| Geocaching Posted: 1/29/2007 8:48:28 AM | I would LOVE to try Geocaching! Apparently there are around 20 of the suckers stashed within a couple kms from my house!!!!
This is something I have been interested in... now I need to find the money for the equipment!

| Geocaching Posted: 1/29/2007 9:05:42 AM | Ok, so I know this guy, who's MAD in love with Geocaching....he says that he and a friend have two of their own around the mountains somewhere **was bored, didn't pay too much attention**....anyway, he tells me that there is like 700 in Alberta alone!!!
We should make up two POF caches....one with POF singles trinkets and shiate, the other full of POF couples pics and shiate (I don't really know what goes into them)
I'm in....this sounds like fun.
Maybe I and another POFer could organize one in the early Spring!!!!

| Geocaching Posted: 1/29/2007 11:08:22 AM | | a couple of friends of mine were into geocaching a couple of years ago... quickly got bored with it because he would leave cool stuff like vintage pez dispensers and would find juicy fruit gum. however, the alberta site on http://www.geocaching.com/ is updated all the time.... | |

| Geocaching Posted: 1/29/2007 11:10:26 AM | | Before I had any GPS receivers, I found one geocache near Mt St Helens, purely by accident. Jumped over a huge log, and there it was. It was very accessible, but could be tricky to find if you were actually searching. Since it was a metal ammo box, it was easy to identify. Your ability to find something will be limited by the accuracy of your GPS, your maps, and the GPS and maps of whoever cached it in the first place. I've tried to confirm some localities by latitude and longitude, knowing pretty much exactly where they are...but according to the map that location is in the middle of a lake. Roads that don't exist or are 50 meters away are also fun. | |
|
| Geocaching Posted: 1/29/2007 8:31:44 PM | Geocaching is a blast!!!
If there's anyone in the Edmonton area who wants to give it a go in the springtime let me know... I'm always up for bringing a suck..er... a friend along!
|
| Geocaching Posted: 1/29/2007 8:38:53 PM | Sounds interesting... I'd be up for it... as long as I'm not the "sucker" veintapper is referring to.
Message me closer to the date.

| Geocaching Posted: 10/28/2007 7:50:23 PM | | So? Did anything ever get going on this or not? | |
|
| Geocaching Posted: 10/28/2007 9:20:25 PM | Frogo - you can get professional quality digital NTS maps for probably anywhere in Alberta for free online. I use em constantly at my work. They are usually at 1:50,000 or 1:250,000 scale but you can always zoom in and print what you need off.
You need to first get a map of all of Alberta with the NTS zones on it so that you know what zone you want to search for.
Let me know and I'll provide a link.
GPS signals are only as good as the number of satellites they are receiving. If you are not receiving at least four then I wouldn't be overly critical of your accuracy. If you are in woods, etc. ..that has a lot to do with the signal accuracy. You should be able to get accuracy, at worst, of half a metre with a cheapo $400 handheld. Also, GPSs need to be calibrated to proper UTM NAD coordinates before they are used otherwise they will give incorrect readings.

| Geocaching Posted: 3/15/2009 11:07:55 PM | Thought I'd refresh an older thread as I tried this on the weekend and it was a blast - even with the weather being a bit cooler today.
Something you can do on your own, or with others...but definitely worth looking into and trying out as a way to get outside and have some fun!

| Geocaching Posted: 3/16/2009 12:41:46 AM | I love geocaching its a big treasure hunt that will often take you all over the place, some are right near busy roads in town, others are in dog parks, others a small hike through a wooded area. Either way its a big treasure hunt that leads to a bunch of fun.
A friend of mine got me started on this and now I think I would want to save up a bit of cash and do the whole thing myself (or with others, it's more fun with someone else) for fun exploration walks around the city or ANYWHERE in the world... Yep, they are placed absolutely everywhere in the world (well... for the most part, there does have to be someone interested in caching in the area that's willing to start up their own caches and what not).
|
| Geocaching Posted: 3/16/2009 3:09:23 PM | ummmm big treasure hunt eh?....kinda like the Indiana Jones ones?.......I don't like spiders so count me out........he always ends up in places with spiders......yikes!!
