| Old Lady on a Harley Posted: 2/2/2007 4:38:58 PM | When I was in my twenties and in the Army I owned a motorcycle. I was stationed in San Francisco. I rode that bike up and down the coast of California and back and forth to Denver a couple times. It was great. Eventually college came along, then bills, then a husband, then kids, blah blah blah. Twenty years later: Husband ran off with another woman and the kids are in their teens and can cook their own dinners every now and then. I'm thinking it sure would be nice to feel the wind wizzing past my ears again. I've ridden on the back of a couple Harleys with a couple guys I went out with. I decided I liked Harleys (rode Hondas when I was young). The new hogs are not the maintenance pigs they were when I was riding before. I'm seriously thinking about buying one. I looked long and hard at an XL 883 Sportster tonight. I picked out some options and then talked to the parts guy (sissy bar, two person seat, leather side bags, custom pegs and some other bells and whistles). I also picked out leathers, helmet etc to get a total price. Now it's just a matter of financing the whole shebang through my credit union, which shouldn't be a problem. I already drive a full sized truck which guys on this site have told me is intimidating (I'm sure they're the guys with cute little trucks ). So, guys, will the Harley make me even scarier? I'll buy the bike whether it makes me scary or not. I'm just curious. | |

| Old Lady on a Harley Posted: 2/2/2007 4:58:29 PM | | OP, you go for it. Any man that would be intimidated by what a woman drives or possesses isn't much of a man to begin with. | |

| Old Lady on a Harley Posted: 2/2/2007 5:39:44 PM | Go for it girl!!! I love riding on a motorcycle, but sadly cannot drive due to a medical condition. I totally agree with the posters who say not to worry about a "man" who would be intimidated by a woman driving a Harley. Do what makes you happy!

Riding is about going on a road trip, wind in your hair and not necessarily knowing where you are going. I like your style of riding. Your not cruising around a city with a "look at me" attitude.

| Old Lady on a Harley Posted: 2/3/2007 2:39:19 PM | Being a Harley owner myself, I have found it can be a GREAT converstion starter. Does it intimidate some...yes, it does. I have had some guys write and say so which I find very endearing and entertaining. I have also had some write and tell me how hot they think it is that I am my own person and a few have even asked me if I would take them for a ride.....
Go for it sister!!!! Be true to thine own self is my theory. I love my bike and love when it brings people to my world for whatever reason......

| Old Lady on a Harley Posted: 2/3/2007 9:21:08 PM | | It wouldn't scare me. I wish I could afford one. Actually think of it as a filter. If it scares the guy, would you want to be dating him in the first place? | |

| Old Lady on a Harley Posted: 2/3/2007 9:26:52 PM | Do what you enjoy....I want one myself.
Some women look hot on bikes but I found the one's that go for the CBR's and Ducati's to be the attractive breed...thin, sexy....the Harley girls look like....the "L" word. | |

| Old Lady on a Harley Posted: 2/6/2007 4:27:25 AM | | I hope the guys will pipe up positive for this because gee, I hope you go with your idea of freedom. Just civilian, but I taught MRC motorcycle school down on the Presidio (late '70s, early '80s, before Crissy Field was wet); rode a Beemer (a number of Suzuki's, a Kawi, had an early Kantana - what a handful, but hung onto my Suzi's til the end); never a Harley, but that was mostly due to the plethora of mid-priced sportsbikes flowing in and the politics of the time. Although I rode for over 20 years, have always been sad for letting it go; could actually have fit the baby in the tank bag, but, well it's a choice (I know, you know). 'Tis an interesting stage of life is it not? The stuff that made hanging up leathers & other personal preferences, starting to dissipate... such a purrrrr to the soul to enjoy that which piques. Easy to notice how many men (near my own age) who take such pride in their newly acquired (two) wheels and wopping (in town) 3k on the odometer. With my own 250k plus, it's easy to nod and smile. Since you've got the history, have completed most of the fireside duty, (perhaps have) checked on life insurance (they're still teens, right?); gee whiz, why not make a choice for you? Kind of chuckled at your comment about guys-on-this-site saying (you) driving a full-size truck was intimidating (which aspect? parking with power steering or the automatic transmission?); sorry, just teasing (now in a gas-efficient Honda, but still miss my full-size Bronco). In truth, it'd be great to focus on the good times you will have... and I bet there's a few fellas smiling, who would enjoy a lady who pursues her heart. | |
