| Live Music Venues in Alberta Posted: 2/2/2007 9:26:38 PM | There didn't seem to be a specific thread for this so I thought it might be a good time to put one in.
Where do you go for live music in Alberta? What type of place is it and what type of music do they play?
What were the last few bands that played there?
Is it a neighbourhood pub, a sports bar, a dance club that has a band stage, a sports and social club or something else...a community hall?
Let's hear from all around the province too, not just Edmonton and Calgary.

| Live Music Venues in Alberta Posted: 2/2/2007 9:47:49 PM | | Well, there is the old standby in Edmonton of The Commercial -- Blues on Whyte. Obviously blues. Urban Lounge usually has decent bands -- check out Mustard Smile if you can. Kinda rock/alternative and play dance music in between sets. There is usually some awesome bands that play at the Arden in St. Albert, the Winspear in Edmonton or Festival Place in Sherwood Park. The last person I saw play at the Winspear was Pavlo, an acoustic guitarist. He was amazing. A group of us are headed to Festival Place in March to see Shooglenifty again -- an high energy crazy band from Scotland. Now there is a mad fiddler!!! | |

| Live Music Venues in Alberta Posted: 2/7/2007 3:19:07 PM | I 'used' to like the Sidetrack Cafe, back when it was in it's old location. They've gotten a new booking manager, and the shows there arn't as good as they used to be.
New City can be okay for alternative bands...
I also really like the Powerplant.
But I agree, the commecial is a solid, reliable place.

| Live Music Venues in Alberta Posted: 2/7/2007 3:54:45 PM | I know there was specific instructions about hearing only from the big cities, but it's not my fault! Calgary chick checking in
The Red Onion is good - blues, but a very far cab ride for me. Ironwood, also good, close, blues, very small venue. There is a new place Kits on 16. Never been there, heard they play blues. Muriettas, jazz or blues. Umm, I know there are more, but I live a sheltered life, can't think of them off hand!

| Live Music Venues in Alberta Posted: 2/9/2007 12:28:07 AM | Sidtrack Cafe (anything goes) Yardbird Suite (jazz club) Blue Chair Cafe (some folk) Blues on Whyte - ROCKS Starlite Room (some poetry readings too) New City Subburbs (metal, rock, goth, whatever) OBryan's on Whyte (indie artists) Jubilee (mostly big names) Stadium (or whatever it's called now) Jeffrey's Cafe (in the west end) King's Knight (on southside - at least they used to) Cook County has country concerts Winspear for mostly classical or chamber
Don't go to Julian's Piano Bar - they really really are... words I shouldn't say. There are more places, and I'll add more as I think of them. If you're looking to play at a venue, Yardbird is pretty decent for prices, Winspear and Stadium charges way too much...you are best to start off at the smaller cafes.
