Dirty jobs

I did a search and couldn't find anything, so I thought I'd ask. I'm a metalworker, mostly welding, and it's a dirty job. The problem is that even after I shower and stuff, sometimes my hands still look dirty, it stains. I even use dawn dishwashing liquid (I've tried the pumice soap but the dawn is better) and plastic scrubbies (not the soft ones meant for showers, the super hard ones meant for scrubbing dried up crusty dishes), even with all that sometimes my hands look a little dirty, especially in all the little cuts and scratches I get. Also I get tiny speckles of burns on my forearms, which can look a little odd though they're really not all that noticable and it's less of an issue then my hands.

So, do women like guys who work dirty jobs, and do they understand that guys who work those jobs sometimes get stained hands even when they're clean? I used to do auto maintenence which was pretty much the same deal, but I was already in a relationship when I got that job, so she saw how it was and understood. Now that I'm single I'm worried that I'll be written off as "dirty" before they have a chance to understand.

I grew up with my grandfather and father having permanently dirty hands. My grandfather died 8 years after he retired, and standing at his coffin I looked at his hands and broke down crying. His hands were the only thing that truly were still him. Stained from the work he used to do.
To me, I don't mind it a bit. It means a man works hard to take care of things.

I respect a man who works hard, and sometimes that means he gets dirty. I lived with a man who worked with glass everyday. After the first layer of cuts healed, his hands turned very caloused. They were not the softest... but WHO CARES!!! If she is gonna like you, she needs to like all of you.

No woman worth bothering about is going to mind a man's hands being 'work-dirty' - something reassuring, solid and dependable about a man who's prepared to graft for a living.

I don't mind a man's hands being stained from his job, but crud under the finger nails is gross!

"Crud" might not be "crud." An automechanic WILL get stains under his (her?) nails. I had an unfortunate incident with motor oil about a week ago, and it took me days before I was happy with the state of my nails. And they weren't "dirty." I scrubbed and scrubbed. That oil is - wow!

So far it's seeming like I was worried over nothing, glad to hear it. If anyone thinks negatively about it don't be afraid to post, you won't hurt my feelings, I'd just like to know what's going through peoples heads.

There are a few products we mechanics use. Everything from a citrus based solution to a petroleum based one with lanolin in it.

My hands are "clean" . I work hard at that but staining occurs and it is frustrating. Trimming our nails and scrapping under the nail helps though. Alot of mechanics wear gloves these days. They help alot but are not perfect.

Trades people are mostly very aware of this problem and we do try , honestly. It's the nature of our work to be dirty so thanks to all who understand and appreciate our efforts. And , girls, if you like skilled hands around you , try a mechanic! ;)

If you have a job and pay your bills, no woman should complain. Also, men who work with their hands are very sexy. These men are usually very helpful and can fix anything. They take pride in the things they do and have a big heart!

You can try rubbing baby oil on your hands to help loosen some stains, but I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Hands are made for holding, not to look at!

Best of luck!

OMG I am in tears ova here!!! Did the chicken know about this???

Sorry I know what you mean... was just funny is all (Not in England).

OT: Can ya wear gloves to do your job? And do your hands bother YOU? If not... don't worry about it... if you date a woman who can't get past the condition of your hands... oh well... too bad for her right?

I wear gloves for most things, but dirt gets through them. I can't wear latex or something that would keep everything out for safety reasons (heat + plastic on skin = bad). Most of the time I don't even think my hands, but being new to the whole single thing, I'm not used to needing to think about them.

It seems to be a 'no-win' situation for you. Can't wear gloves, can't get the hands clean afterwards.

While I agree with the other posters that we all love a man who works with his hands , a woman is also going to be thinking about where those hands are going to go. Specifically his fingers.

Having said that, it becomes a matter of hygiene now and no matter how much she loves you and respects the work you do, she still has to think about hygiene and possible infection.

Wish I knew of a solution for you. Good Luck.

Excellent, I'm glad someone who's bothered by it posted. Ok, see here's the thing... after all my scrubbing my hands are perfectly clean, I could perform surgery with them if I knew how (the soap I use is anti-bacterial too). But how would I convince someone who thinks along those lines otherwise before I've already been written off because they're worried about dirty hands going down there. I don't think "hi, nice to meet you, my hands aren't dirty they're stained" is really the best way to go about it, so what is?

when you find out, let me know. in the mean time, have you used barrier cream on your hands? the stained skin will eventually slough off, but the newer skin will stain too if you don't protect it. is it possible to protect your hand from your work's dirt? i used to work at a factory and barrier cream was the only thing that kept me from getting "man hands", if you know what i mean.

If you could tell us what you do, then do the exact same thing when you're getting to know a lady. If its a problem, then its her issue.

Date women that are trades oriented. I used to be a welder, so that would not bother me.

try soaking your hands in bleach for 30 mins each night, it helps.

just kidding.

one thing that might work for you is somehow ask your lady friend to meet you at your work. when she arrives, wash your hands throughly and sanitize and all that stuff; show her that you take good care of your hands hygiene. moisture afterwards as it shows that you do take care of your hands. also, i've heard through the grapevine that if you moisture your hands before you perform your task, it can prevent your hands from staining, to a point.

good luck.

The automotive type hand cleaners do a pretty good job.
Hydrogen Peroxide will help with some of the stains that have soaked in.
Those little scrubbing brushes help too.

Once you get your hands clean you can keep them a little cleaner by using
some sort of hand lotion type stuff BEFORE you start working. The stains
soak in because your hands are dry when you start and soak up dirty stuff.
Let them soak up clean stuff first and they'll be easier to wash up later.
{PVC glue and primer stain mine up pretty good sometimes}

Wouldn't bother me at all OP. Just yes please, use one of those little brushes that you soap up and then use for around and under the finger nails. I don't care if your hands are stained or not. It's a badge of honor. I'd be proud of you. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry too much about clean dirty hands!
How do you think I feel whilst emptying a camode? It's all a part of the job. Someone has to do it.
