| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 2/10/2007 3:09:25 PM | Hello, I have lived in South Florida for most of my life and know that it's time for a change. I have been looking for a place to relocate my family. I have narrowed it down to a few places with Knoxville being near the top of the list. My question..... Can you give me an idea of how life is there. I mean things like weather, employment, cost of living, community events,. Things to do for fun. I love the outdoors and have been really looking forward to taking up hiking. I will be moving with my one of my teenage sons. My brother will be following shortly after. Well anything you can share to give me an idea of what to expect will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and hope to be there soon.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 2/15/2007 4:29:58 PM | well it's been a few days and no one has anything to tell me about Knoxville. Ok so this tells me one of a few different things.
1. The people in the area are just to darn busy to drop a quick line. In which case, I dont want to be that busy so maybe I'll look elsewhere.
2. They have enough imigrants from the South Florida area and are sick of us already..... Hey I feel your pain.
3. Their moms raised them right and they learned,... if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all..
Ok which one is it people of Knoxville. Help a girl out here

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 2/21/2007 2:38:22 PM | I love Knoxville. I have lived all over the country but this is where I am going to stay. The cost of living is low. The weather is not extremely hot int he summer ot cold in the winter. We have just enough snow to appreciate summer, and just enough 90 degree weather to appraciate the winter. There is alway something giong on downtown. We have several lakes to go to, camping and fishing are great. Employment opportunites are not too bad, depending on what your occupation is. I am less than 4 hrs from Atlanta, 3 to Lexington KY, 3 to Nashville. I can get anywhere fast. There are literally hundreds of miles of hiking trails here. Since I do have the choice, this is my home. | |

Everyday I get a little bit closer to leaving here and I cant even put into words how much I'm looking forward to it. I hope Knoxville is a good choice and hope that it will be a good home for my family. I hope to keep in touch with people here but I'm really looking forward to making friends there. Well keep your fingers crossed for me and I hope to be there soon. Thanks again.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 9/3/2007 6:05:12 PM | | IF it's not too late, let me suggest a smaller town but still in the Knoxville area. Try one of the surrounding towns. Lenoir City, Loudon, Maryville (beautiful place) or if you aren't working there try something a little further south. But of course, this is only my own preferences. I like small towns. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/1/2007 1:41:27 PM | Thanks Angel, I havent checked this thread in quite a while, but it's nice to know someone was paying attention. I too like small towns and I'm hoping to find a job somewhere that will allow to live in smalltown USA. I'm planning on making a scouting trip up there in Feb. Keeping my fingers crossed that this all works out. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/2/2007 1:53:39 AM | Shelly the Tennessee Forum is just not very active. Actually it seems most "State" forums here are that way. People don't visit here all that much unfortunately. Too busy rounding up all those Soul-Mates. It's nothing personal or anything. You can make a post and not have any response for a couple months in some cases. Or more sometimes.
I agree about Maryville in particular though. I've often thought a lot about moving there myself. Very low crime levels, for Tennessee, not very crowded and traffic isn't too bad, (nothing like the bigger cities here), very accessible to the Smokie Mountains for hiking and all sorts of nifty outdoor activities, dining and just about everything one might want there, yet still a relatively small, peaceful and pretty little city with lots of great scenery.
Maryville was rated the #1 place in the entire country to live, a couple of years back in one of those magazines that does that. Don't quite recall which one. But that's when I started looking at it a little closer, and began a little scouting myself..
Good luck in your travel adventures! There are a lot worse places to live.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/10/2007 12:04:51 PM | Sorry about that SuthnBoy.. just been busy and havent checked the posts in a while. Thanks for you input. I have been told by someone who responded that my "Florida attitude" wont cut it up there and that I will be shunned by the unfriendly people there. HMMMMM.. think maybe he was just a little preturbed that I didnt respond to an email quickly enough. I honestly dont spend much time on here as I work alot. Thank you for your input and I'll let all who posted know how my upcoming move goes. Thanks again | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/11/2007 12:15:27 PM | Oh that wasn't anything directed at you Shelly..
I was just playing around being silly because nobody is around much these daze. Gotta shake it up or something.. Get some activity going! Maybe a concert or a carnival in here might do it.
That's kind of an odd response you got though, seems to me. You will find most Tennessee folks friendlier than your average bear, and I've lived in most parts of the good ole USA.. I think everywhere is different from what it was some years back, but that's just our "progressive(?)" evolution process.
However, I lived in FL too, for quite a few years, and while people there were just fine, Tennessee certainly was more hospitable and open, to say the least. Or I certainly felt that way when I first got here.
I suspect you'll be quite pleased with your transition. Especially in the Eastern areas. Again, Maryville for instance, is especially nice by all accounts including my own visits..

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/11/2007 1:44:29 PM | | thanks for the encouragment. I have a mental countdown going and I just cant wait to leave here. I know that life is what you make of it ... however it's just very difficult to survive here with a one income family. Sooooo I am hoping and praying... mostly praying.. that it will be different there. I am positive that I will get along just fine with the people. Well keep your fingers crossed for me, it's not going to be easy but I'm determined to make it work. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/12/2007 1:07:44 AM | Well, we do still have a pretty favorable cost of living here Shelly. But some folks in State Government want Tennessee to be more on par COL-wise with most other states and as such they are adding various taxes and things here and there, in an attempt to get that way.
It's a bit ironic in that respect, but what can you do unless you have a chance to vote on such things, and sometimes we do. Anyway for now we're still a bit better than a lot of other states and I'm quite sure Florida is one of those. I'm just not sure how long that's likely to last. Housing here though is fairly expensive, although still probably a bit less.
You'll find it more favorable outside the immediate bigger city areas though of course. I.e. if you were to settle in a semi-distant suburb of Knoxville, better than living in Nashville proper or even Knoxville for example.
Again much luck. If questions come up, just toss them right on out there.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/12/2007 7:20:35 AM | | Thanks, I do plan on moving to the outskirts. I need some open spaces, so hopefully it wont be to expensive. But whatever it turns out to be has got to better than being here. I will keep you in mind for any questions that come up about the area. Thanks for your help and input. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/18/2007 9:07:13 AM | Check! Let us know about your progress as it gets closer Shelly!
Be sure to do that exploratory trip in advance of course. That should tell you a lot about the situation, you'll want to know.. I would personally recommend Maryville as a relatively distant self-contained suburb with a lot of nice benefits, including one of the lowest crime levels in the state.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/19/2007 8:14:15 PM | | I sincerely hope that you will like the Knoxville area. We have a lot of people wanting to get away from the area you live in now. We are in a prime area. I am new to Knoxville area as well. I am staying with my son until I can get an apartment of my own.I grew up around 55 miles away so I do know a lot about Knoxville. There are good doctors and hospitals here. And of course Gatlinburg and the Smokey Mountains. Wherever you decide to go I wish you luck. Yes I know it will be different here but I am certain you can make the most of it. And we could always use another Vol Fan!lol! Good Luck | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/22/2007 10:25:54 AM | Thank you so much, blue eyes. It's nice to hear encouraging words. I sure hope the people in the area are not sick of the immagrants(sp). I am very anxious and nervous to get things rolling. I'm only waiting for my oldest to graduate in May then I can get this started..... just counting the days. Keep your fingers crossed for me and I will let all of you know my progress along the way. till then | |

| Hoping to move to Maryville also Posted: 10/27/2007 7:13:43 PM | I have been searching and searching for place to live for a while now, and have chosen Maryville, it seems like it keeps popping up in the back of my mind, like an old shoe...lol. It is important to me that I can find someplace I can grow older in, as I am already 50.....I can't keep moving! I view the apt and jobs everyday online.....I need a fresh start badly! It is very hard to find an apt w/o a job, and a job w/o a resident, so it is pretty much a catch 22, but I will figure something out. I hope it is soon though.....lol. | |

| Hoping to move to Maryville also Posted: 10/29/2007 6:58:41 PM | Pretty good choice SillyGal..
There are a lot worse places to be than Maryville. Have you been there to check it out yet?
Very close to the Smokies, yet not very crowded, as is Gatlinburg itself and the like. Exceptionally low crime rate. Probably a very reasonable COL. Almost entirely self-contained, as in everything is there that one might need without commuting, yet not terribly urban either. In fact quite small. But seemingly lots to do.
Don't know for sure about jobs there, but time will tell I suppose. I just may end up there myself, if I can remove myself completely from this struggling music biz.

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 10/31/2007 8:49:45 PM | Shelly,
Just discovered this TN page myself, tonight, so you gotta forgive us dummies that live here and don't know any better. LOL
Knoxville area is a great place to live!! And, as far as being an immigrant ..............most of us are imports from somewhere..............after you learn how to pronounce Knoxville, Maryville and Sevierville with the local flair, they'll never know!! I was born and raised in MO.......spent several yrs in CA when I was younger, 15 yrs in AR, then moved to Memphis area for a yr then to East Tn in 89..............and I gotta tell U, I am a TN girl.............. There's so much to see and do here, with the Mtns and all the tourist trap stuff in Sevier County and Knoxville is big enough to have some of the perks of the citylife. also. I have lived in Lenoir City, Pigeon Forge, Kodak and Knoxville..........for me, I prefer Sevier Co to anything else.
Best of luck to you in your future and whatever is best for you!! Karen

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 11/5/2007 4:11:39 AM | | Shelly, I just discovered this forum. Sorry no one has helped you. If you like to dance, there is a singles dance very week end--non-smoking and non-drinking. We have an email list of singles activites in the Knoxville area. I live in the next county and drive to K-town or Knoxvega (two local names) all the time to do things. If you think you might be interested let me know--if you made the move. Cost of living is cheaper in some surrounding counties although Blount County (Maryville or Alcoa) is getting higher. It is a buyers market for housing right now. If you are looking for jobs www.indeed.com and www.jobcentral.com are great places to look for work. | |

| Thinking of moving to Knoxville... any advice? Posted: 11/5/2007 4:19:29 AM | | I was going to email you with some local info and contact phone numbers, but you have my age and gender blocked so I will just give you general info here. You said you liked motorcycles, the Smokey Mtn Harley Davidson dealership here (Maryville) has a place called The Shed--lots of music and shows during the summer. They do employ women at the dealership--might be a place to start--doing something you know and enjoy. There is also a dealership in Knoxville but they don't have the Shed. The Dragon (google that) is the number one place in the nation for cyclists in the nation--located in south Maryville. Hundreds of curves-lots of laydowns and unfortunately, usually a death a week in the summer. If you want some location direction when you come in Feb, maybe we can meet for lunch and I will show you around. Check out the websites I listed in the other post and perhaps you can get some interviews set up when you come in Feb. | |
