How does one get rid of telephone soliitors? Is there a way, like in an e-mail situation when you can request to be off of a mailing list? I have had this MNBA (or something like that) bank calling me and harassing me for the past three weeks. If I wanted an account there...I would have one. It will never happen now, and I've told them that their hounding me will not make it happen...but they keep calling! Does anyone know of any way to get this to stop??? Thanks!

as being an old telemarketer... "take me off your calling list" then they must stop. it does take up to a month to get you off their lists, if they still hound you, mention the cops, that will do it!

tmoycl : they MUST end the conversation IMMEDIATELY!

Hope that helps

Invest in call display and an answering machine.
I don't answer any calls unless I know the number anyways.

ok...thank you!...I will do this if it keeps up. In the meantime, i've taken some pepto-bismol because of the upset factor going on here. I may do the dance in a little while...

Whatever you do...do NOT get a credit card with them. If you think this past three weeks is bad..it gets worse.

My brother had a credit card with them. He lived at my parents home when he first got it. He since moved out and was negligent with payments. The company continued to call, harrass, verbally abuse my parents. MNBA were told repeatedly that my brother no longer resided there and they provided his new cell number. They called both numbers non stop. My brother made deals to pay them off and they still continued to call and harrass my parents even though they were recieving the payments that was agreed upon.

My parents could not get anything done to stop the harrassing phone calls. They got call blocking, the company got around it. They got it so if your number is not displayed you cannot get thorugh. Being a compnay from the US..this did not work. The US numbers can get around that too. Their phone company could do nothing to help being it was an American company.

Nothing worked, but my brother finally paying it all off in one lump sum. Even though he was sticking to the deal and making his payments, MNBA felt the need to phone and harrass his parents.

Being that this company is not in this country that does not and did not work. I saw it frist hand while visiting my parents. Daily phone calls, non stop......

for telemarketers in general, if you know you don't want to talk to them, just hang up. It's the most humane response. I tried TM before, I lasted a total of six hours. My favourite callers, (besides the one that bought a subscription to the Globe and Mail) were the ones that immediately hung up.

I also view call display as one of the best inventions ever - if I don't know the number, I'm not answering the call. If I do know the number ... well, then it depends.

On the odd occasion when I make the mistake of answering, I'm a big fan of just saying "Sorry, I'm not interested", and hanging up before they can say anything else. If it's a telemarketer that is.

i had a funny one a while ago....the phone would ring and as soon as i picked up they would hang up. i figure cause i had a new phone num. and my name wouldn't register with them so they never bothered to speek to me but rather hang up. this happened for over a month. i could set my clock to them every evening. so i *69 the number, and used it to call it back on auto dial...i actually got through and to my suprise, it was a fundraiser program for the Calgary city police !!!!!

Keeping a whistle near the phone works too...they'll never call again if you blow the whistle into the phone once.

Oh i like this topic.

Other then telling them to take you off their call list and threaten them when/if they call you back, try the following.

After they call and you identify they are marketing something, take a deep breath.

Ask them about all the products they have, get into molecular detail, including color, shape, etc etc..

After about 10 minutes of yanking their chain, pretend you have forgotten it all and ask them to go through it again.

I had some poor schlep on the phone for 25 minutes. He was getting pretty pissed off too. I was laughing my butt off after about 15 minutes when he was raising his voice.

At the 20 minute mark he point blank asked me if i was interested, i just asked him if he could go over the material just one more time.

After 25 minutes he finally clued in and hung up on me. HOW RUDE!!!!

I completely agree with using call display (best thing ever!) & if you're just not sure about the number, the caller will leave a message if they're legit. A not-so-polite "stop calling me" should work too.

What about the National Do No Call registry that I've heard about? Maybe google it and see what that's all about.

On a side note, few years ago my outgoing message said "you've reached ###, if you're selling, I'm not buying. If you know I want to speak with you, leave a message and I will certainly call you back." A telephone solicitor actually left me a message telling me how rude I was!! To my knowledge though, he never called back!

LMAO. Some of these responses are SOOOOO funny!!!!! I'm the "phone NAZI" at home. When someone calls and mispronounces my last name I KNOW immediately that they are telemarketers and I tell them that MR. (or MRS) BEG are not home. They ask when a good time to call back is and I then proceed to run down my parents schedule for the next week. LMAO usually takes about 5 minutes and then I ask for a number they can call back on. I get the run around and finally I say LOOK they're really busy and unless this is life or death you should probably just forget it. If I get we'll try back later my response is fine, but you're just going to get me next time anyway, they never call back. hehe. Now if it's legit like MADD or fundraising that my mom will contribute to, then I will usually just say sorry hang on and call my mom who is usually standing there laughing at me.

My responses range from " F U C K OFFFFFFFFF!" to simply putting the phone on speaker, and saying "hold on, just a sec..." to timid feigned interest when they announced they were with the Edmonton police... once i realized it was a phone scam i politely said "piss off, please."

Problem, there is no problem. I just tell them that I don't live here ... then hang up ... or, I tell them they have the wrong number ... then hang up, or, ... if I am in good mood ... I tell them I am on the way out the door and when they say, when's a good time, then I say ... "can't plan far ahead" and hang up ...

Simple. Ask their full name. First and last. Make them spell it even if its "smith". Ask for their employee number, the name of their direct supervisor, and to spell his/her name, and then ask to be passed to corporate legal counsel. Advise them that as of this point the conversation is being recorded and do they understand their personal rights and liabilities. Make them answer. Repeat the question over and over until they answer. Advise them that if they do not immediately take you off the "call list" they will be named in the harrasment suit your personal legal counsel will be filing immediately after the next telephone call, and that you can guess the company they are working for will not be supplying them with their own legal counsel to defend the action. Then repeat yourself about five times. "Do you UNDERSTAND me. If you call me again, for any reason, under any circumstances, you'll be picking bottles out of garbage can to feed your children for the next 20 years." If you feel like it, throw in a mention of the Canadian Federal Commission on Cross Border Trade Harassment and the north american agreement with the U.S. Treasury Department's Division of National Securities Harassment. Ask how many complaints have been filed with this division against them personally. Ask them when was the last time. Remind them they are being recorded. Twice. Then hang up.

Its a total pile of bunk, but especially if they're from the states, where the lawsuits are retarded, they won't know the difference.

Its never failed.

when they launch into the spiel asking to speak to Mr. or Mrs. blablabla

or the man or lady of the household

say he or she is deceased

wail loudly, like from the movies of Italian funeral scenes

makes them apologize and end the call quickly

also makes 'em alter their calling lists

hah anyone else get the cvlowns calling and telling you your credit card is great but your interest rates are going up ?
well , i pushed the number 1 when i heard that, a guy comes on the phn and states his name and blah blah , then i asked him nicely to stop calling me as its been ongoing 4 times a day for the last 2 months and fiunally id had enough.
he then stated he couldnt believe id actually push 1 and waste his time to merely whine
well . hehe after that and a lil heated arguement, he vehemently said theres no way hed take me off the call list or even try to get me off.
so i told him fine, but that from now on id be calling them back every time and id tell em all off everytime i got a call.

i think if enough people do this. they will get hurt feelings
they wanna waste our time , i say we waste there time back and harrass them as wasily as they harrass us

so. please dont hang up on the recorded messages. push the key they request and give em a piece of your mind.
that was one upset yanky on the other end of my phone line hahaha

I wonder if the guy realized that you could have gotten him fired.

I had an incident a few years ago where a certain newspaper was calling me every day at various times to get me to subscribe. Each time I said that I wasn't interested in getting their paper and asked to be put on their do not call list. I don't know about now but then they were supposed to maintain one and adhere to it. By the tenth call in 8 days I was getting more than a little ticked off. The last guy that called, I explained what had been going on and asked to please be left alone. The guy started lecturing me on why I should get the paper and how wrong I was not to subscribe. That was the final straw and I told him that in my opinion print media was a waste of paper and I preferred to get my news from more timely sources. The guy said, "Well you are a waste of skin." And hung up. You know how they say on some calls that they may be monitored? This one was. I found that out when I called the newspaper whom this guy represented. Over a 15 minute call I was promised that they would look into it, to disciplinary actions would be taken to I would get a free subscription and a written apology. I told them that my big concern was how I had been treated and that the guy learn that his behaviour was unacceptable. This wasn't a ploy on my part to get free papers. A week later I received a call from someone higher up the food chain and he said that the call record was checked and the caller had been terminated.

An easy one that works is to just say"can you hang on a minute?", they will. just lay down the phone off the hook and let it set until the 'off the hook' noise starts. It wastes their time and cut into their commissions.

The best one I pulled was during the first OJ Simpson trial.

it went something like...

HIM: Hi I'm Jason with XYZ Carpet Cleaning and we have a special package on sale right now.

ME: Wow is this ever lucky! I need my carpets cleaned and in a bad way, they are a bloody mess.

HIM: Starts to spiel and babble about the special.

ME: Uh huh, are stairs included?

HIM: (getting pretty pumped) Telling me more...

ME: So tell me Jason, how clean will you get my carpets?

HIM: Oh, very clean! They will look good as new!

ME: Can you tell me if your carpet cleaning removes all genetic materials from the carpet?

HIM: What do you mean?

ME: Once you were done cleaning my carpets, would , say a police investigation be able to reveal any genetic material?

HIM: I don't know? I'll have to ask my supervisor.

ME: As long as you're asking can you find out how fast you can be here?

HIM: How fast do you need your carpets cleaned?

ME: Well, I have to catch a plane in about 6 hours and I'd really like to leave clean carpets behind.

HIM: (sounding kind of stunned) There is no way we could be ther that fast.

ME: Oh well, I guess I have to leave this whole bloody mess behind. But thanks anyway Jason.

HIM: (sounding confused) OK, bye.

I did have the time to jerk his chain, get him all hyped up and then trash his hopes. What the hell it's a little bit of payback!

Get an unlisted number. So long as you don't distribute your phone number or sign up for anything in the stores with it, your calls will stop. That's why my number is unlisted... :)

Lots of funny stories you guys, I love it. I have an unlisted number, they still call. The ones that I like (okay, my humour is a little off beat) is when they ask to speak to my husband, they even ask for him by name. He passed away almost 3 years ago and they still call for him. I make my voice sound distressed and tell them he's dead and then get more emotional and ask why they keep calling him. They don't call back.

That's a good one.

Yeah, the unlisted # thing helps but that can't protect ya completely nowadays. Solicitors have even found my cell # lately and it's almost from back when cell phones came to Alberta and weren't listed anyplace, nor showed up on displays. Like others have said here and on a few other threads, it's best to try and get THEM to put YOU on a "do not call" list. I've found "well, Im not really looking for *whatever they're selling* but do you know where/how etc.........." Tie em up. Endless queries soliciting responses from them work best.

I have to ask why this Telephone Solicitation job still exist? and who are those who has to work like this? Do they have no choice but have to take this kind of insults 8 hours a day for a living so that they can bring some bread home? Do you think the marketers are not human, or if they are indeed human but they have no brain, no self-esteem? Can we not treat them like criminals, can we just kindly decline their offers without being so rude? Why we have to tease, insult those innocent callers? by all means they are only employees. From all the posts in here, it seems to me, some can't even wait until a Telephone Solicitor to call so that they can cruelty practicing their answering skill just for the fun of it.

When telemarketer called, I would just kindly said: I am sorry but I don't understand much English, or I cannot hear well but thanks anyway. They always left me along after my simple answers, never had troubles with them keep calling me back. Tell me, why you have to be so mean to this Telemarketers?
