| | POF Outing!! Backpacking anyone?Page 1 of 1 | Since the forums seem to get more action than the profiles I thought I'd try something a little different for a few of us to meet and have some fun.
A buddy of mine (also on POF) and I are planning a weeks backpacking trip to Isle Royale this August, with a couple shorter "warm up" trips sometime before then. The Isle Royale trip, tenatively, will be 6-7 days on the island. In 5 of those days we would like to cover approx 50 miles hiking and have 1-2 days to spend more leisurely. The warm ups will be more local weekend hikes that should be from 8-20 miles depending on time.
There are about six people that have already "signed up" and we're looking for more. We have just started the planning so now is the time to get in if interested. Our plans are to get together once every 1-2 weeks for****ails and planning. And when the weather breaks we will get together more often for conditioning (walking, jogging, biking, etc...)
If anyone is interested, for any or all of the above, please post or send an email. It could be a great chance to meet some new people.

| POF Outing!! Backpacking anyone? Posted: 2/25/2007 10:52:38 AM | Hasn't been decided on yet, but we are limiting ourselves to the lower. I know that leaves it wide open. Couple years ago we did North Manitou Island and Ludington. Both a bit of a distance I realize. Wouldn't mind doing those again or any other 1-2 night trek.
I can reccommend a couple books it you'd like. That way we'd at least have the same source material if you decided to go.
Have you packed before?

| POF Outing!! Backpacking anyone? Posted: 2/25/2007 11:04:05 AM | The books are '50 Hikes in Michigan' 2nd edition by Jim DuFresne and 'Isle Royale National Park, Foot Trails and Water Routes' 3rd edition also by Jim DuFresne.
Both available at Barnes and Noble. There were a couple other hiking/backpacking books there, one included all of the U.P. which looked good also.

| POF Outing!! Backpacking anyone? Posted: 2/25/2007 11:33:35 AM | Thanks for the recommendations -
I've backpacked in the Caribbean, Two days in along the coast (mostly uphill and downhill) 2-3 days camping on the beach. We take everything we need, dried foods, tents, cooking supplies etc. average pack weighs about 60lbs.
Of course we're dealing with weather that's between 80-90 degrees depending on the time of year, so I'm guessing that's the biggest difference.

| POF Outing!! Backpacking anyone? Posted: 3/23/2007 10:23:01 PM | Sounds like a great idea, you should have fun.
I'm not up to sleeping on the ground anymore myself, and I haven't done two days of walking in a few years either. Anybody planning on this should work up to it this Spring with some day hiking off the pavement, then try some of those 2 to 3 day hikes.
Everyone is different of course, just be sure you know what to expect. I've had some bad experiences with taking women to Silver Lake for a trek across the dunes out to Lake Michigan and there was a lot of complaining and disappointment. I think one of them was expecting a resort or something when we got to the shoreline. I'm sure guys can be this bad too. Makes a decent day trip though for anyone in Mid- or West Michigan.
For the more serious U.P. backpacking don't overlook Porcupine Mountains State Park. The Porkies might be a better first destination for new wilderness trekkers.
You didn't mention the bears and wolves.

| POF Outing!! Backpacking anyone? Posted: 3/24/2007 5:52:07 PM | | I hike ludington all the time. Sounds like fun. Let me know. I'll come along on the local hikes. Isle Royale is a little far away for me but I like to go local and it be fun to have people to hike with. So if you wouldn't mind just an extra local hiker I be willing to join for a hike here and there. | |

| POF Outing!! Backpacking anyone? Posted: 3/25/2007 6:50:25 AM | Back Packing sounds like fun. I have two jobs so I would need time to plan ahead and get my vacation time pay from my jobs. I am not 100% fit but I am sure that I can keep up very well.
Keep me posted on where and when the backpack hike will take place. Also I need to know what do I need to take with me for the trip, so that I can get those things ahead of time too. Have a great weekend.

| POF Outing!! Backpacking anyone? Posted: 3/25/2007 7:21:50 AM | Sounds like a great trip. I, unfortunately can;t make it since my vacation time is already booked for the summer. I would be interested in the warm ups though.
On a side note, for those POFers who enjoy hiking, I would recommend a group called BSHiking. (Beautiful Singles Hiking) They get together every 1st and 3rd sunday of the month at Maybury SP in Novi. They also do many other activities outside of hiking. No need to be beautiful, single, or an experienced hiker to join in. Just show up at a scheduled event and enjoy! Check out thier website for events.....

I would love to come to the UP Hike, but its too far away ( about 10 hours) and weekends working. Isan't that sad, weekends are suppose to be fun, but instead they're borring and like any other day of the week :(
